Gender equality is a very important subject matter that teachers must deal with in the classroom. Most people believe that males are suppose to be competitive, aggressive, and logical thinkers, whereas, females should be sociable, passive and emotional thinkers. People all over the world accept these stereotypes of females and males. These stereotypes also carry over into the way teachers conduct their classrooms. In education both genders have advantages and disadvantages in different areas.
What is gender equality? Gender equality in terms of education is about the socialization of men and women and the results of this process on the life outcomes of the two genders. (BOOK). In the United States, the education system is required to treat males and females equally. There has been much research done to compare genders in all areas.

There are many differences between boys and girls in the classroom. Most people do not realize this, but it is a proven fact. Gender differences in math and science are very evident. Teachers subconsciously treat boys with a higher degree of respect when it comes to math and science than they do girls.
Usually, teachers pay more attention, and give more positive attention to boys in their classrooms. This is especially noticed in the areas of math and science. Studies have shown that teachers give boys more attention in the early and crucial years because they fear that the boys will fall behind in their school subjects, and that boys are more daring – more willing to take risks and answer questions, even though it may be wrong.

The difference between males and females is difficult to identify because the average sex difference is so small in terms of IQ. The abilities including IQ , is greater for males than females, which shows we should see more males in the gifted ability spectrum. When looking at student’s mental abilities, males tend to score better in mathematical reasoning than females. Males also have a higher standard deviation than females when it comes to spatial ability. “The average sex difference in mathematical reasoning is small, but the disproportion becomes dramatic among the most talented.” (BOOK)
