Race and racism is a very sensitive subject throughout the world, but I strongly believe it should be discussed in American public high schools as part of the curriculum. Children nowadays are uneducated about how much racism occurs in our country and how they are even racist themselves without knowing it. If learning about racism was a part of our curriculum I think people would be more aware of how it affects one another and how they can stop it from happening. Racism happens everywhere and everyday. African Americans get looked at differently all the time. If children were taught in school from a young age how to accept everyone no matter their skin color I believe there would be less racism in the world we live in today. When kids are taught things at a younger age they then know the right thing to do, and it shows as they get older. Older generations than mine were taught that things should be segregated, and there should be white and black bathrooms, and white and black busses. If our grandparents and great grandparents were taught in school that everyone should get treated equal, and we are all the same no matter what our skin color is, then racism would not be this large of an issue. On channel4.com there was a statistic that stated that only 3 percent of Americans think that racism is not an issue in the US currently. People nowadays understand what is happening and know how racism is a very large issue, but do not do anything about it. If it was taught in school I feel there would be less of an issue. I am not saying that racism would be gone forever because individuals do what they want, but I truly feel it would significantly lessen the amount of racism that we have going on. According to a February poll from Public religion Research Institute on CNN.com they said more than ¾ of black people say that they feel they are discriminated in our country.
