More people have become aware of racism and the way we treat people but it’s still a problem. In this book, it shows examples of racial strife includes segregation, physical attacks and emotional abuse. The Logan family was treated indescribably. The book starts showing racial strife when the children of the black family has to go to a different school than the white children for that very reason. This book shows the way racism from the 1930’s and how much it’s changed compared to today. If we treated African Americans the same way starting in the 1930’s we wouldn’t have had so much commotion that we have today. In “Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry” the blacks were so segregated that they had to go to different schools, and they didn’t even have a bus to walk to schools which took an hour there and back. Another reason why racism has changed since the 1900’s is from the movie “Ernest Green” (which took place in the 1960’s) from Little Rock Nine, nine black students in Little Rock, Alabama were allowed to attend white schools. It would be ignorant to say racism does not exist till today. There is almost a complete 100 year difference between the reconstruction period and the Civil Rights Movement for equal rights to the Black society. While slavery took time to vanish in the south in those hundreds of years, segregation was pushed harshly, laws we 're enacted to prevent Blacks from having certain privileges that whites had. Segregation almost seemed to kick the Blacks out of the society we live together in. The Jim Crow laws had made efficient work in separating the Blacks from the Whites in society, and it took the Civil Rights movement in 1964 to finally bring more equality to the African-American society. However, the Ku Klux Klan and still other organizations had existed and continue to exist despite efforts to bring equality. There is a strong social equality for the Black population in America today, but because of hate organizations and discrimination still existing today, black lives are being lost through murder, and even in forms of police brutality. Take for example the L.A riots in 1992 from the beating of Rodney King, or going back to 1967 the Detroit riots which tore apart these cities. Today Black Lives Matter movements exist to crush out racism in society so people no longer have to live in fear, and it is an existing movement that I think will actually fade as generations in the future work to build up society, and racism will become a thing of a past. There is however, always going to be something that causes prejudices and hate in society if not directed to one group of people. Even today if racism disappears between blacks and whites, prejudice occurs between cultural people here in America. For example, when slavery was ended and the slaves were emancipated, that did not end the connotation of racism in America. In order not to look like the slaves, the white farmers started to wear wool hats instead of their straw hats (107). This part in particular struck me as being exceptionally ridiculous. It is proof that the concept of racism was digging deeper and going much further than it had been even in the age of slavery. Now that the slaves were free, the American people came up with more excuses to discriminate against them. Jim Crow laws were put into place in the sixties, and they caused segregation and discrimination to become a common theme in America. African Americans could not attend school with the whites, nor could they live in neighborhoods or houses near the whites. This became another problem when social security came into play. According to the Social Security Board, “the number of Negroes to whom aid was granted… was low in proportion to the number who needed assistance” (178). Another atrocity of discrimination was associated with the housing segregation. The “redline” meant the “identifying of a neighborhood for unfavorable treatment” (182). The houses that were in the “redline” so to speak, went to people of a different race, such as the African Americans, or the Irish. Even today, African Americans are discriminated against in jobs. If they don’t want to work at backbreaking jobs, they are considered lazy, whereas they will be discriminated against and torn down if they do want the jobs
Despite the fact the 1800s was two centuries ago, racism is still persistent in the 21st century. Even with the election of the first black president, Obama is biracial, yet he is still recognized as black. Many black Americans thought racism would cease to exist with Obama in office. The color of skin and race still lives on, after all the United States is multicultural. As in the 1800s, racism had astronomically effects on society; nonetheless American citizens have more laws and agencies to safeguard against racism. Remember, slavery is a part of America’s history and it can’t be erased like an error. Harriet Jacobs wrote, “There are wrongs which even the grave does not bury.” Despite the abolishment of slavery, racism has simply adapted to the changes within society.
Racism in the American Society in the 1920s Black people have always been a part of America's history. They were brought to America in the seventeenth century as slaves by white settlers. Slavery ended by the nineteenth century, and by this time there were more black Americans than white Americans in the southern states. However, Blacks always had a tough time, this is due to the stereotypical view that the people had of them. The whites believed that the Blacks were primitive, illiterate and criminals.
As a result, racism still exists today , african americans vs. whites as well as vice versa. People are constantly discriminated or passed over for jobs because of race, gender or ethnicity. The society we live in today face challenges that we have never faced before. Many people have the opportunity of attending schools, when back in the face the possibilities were very slim. Ironically, people are so well educated yet, lack integrity, character, accountability and virtues.
Racism was very big in the 1930’s. In an excerpt from The Help written by Kathryn Stockett, it says “Sit down on your behind, Minney, because I'm about to tell you the rules for working for a white lady.” During this time, many white people had African Americans working for them. They would treat them unfairly and had so many harsh rules, just because they were black. “You use the same cup, same fork, same plate everyday. Keep it in a separate cupboard and tell that white woman that’s the one you'll use from here on out” (Stockett, 1). If you worked for a white person, you had to use your things everyday, and if you got caught laying a hand on a white persons things, you'd be out on the street. African Americans weren't even allowed to share the same toilet as a white person, as it says “Don't ever let that white lady find you sitting on her toilet” (Stockett, 1). In conclusion these authors did a great job of painting a picture of what times were like back in the 1920’s. I actually feel like I was there during most of these movements. The 1920’s was a powerful time frame to look back on. I don’t think I could have lived during these times due to everything that was going on. Lastly, going back into time and looking at the representation and feeling of African American during the 1920s was very informative and educating. I would say racism played a huge part in society back then. I would like to leave you with this question, is racism still alive and where do we do from here?
Today, blacks are respected very differently in society than they used to be. In “The Help”, we see a shift in focus between what life is like now for the average African American compared to what it was like for them to live in the 1960’s.“The Help” teaches readers the importance of understanding and learning from our history. The novel is a snapshot of the cultural, racial and economic distinctions between blacks and whites in a particularly tumultuous time in American history. “The Help” encourages readers to examine personal prejudices and to strive to foster global equality.
Racism is something that is a problem in the world today, but in the early 1900s it was extremely worse. The way African Americans were treated was almost inconceivable. The comparison between a caucasian and an African American was like a human to a street rat. When the only major difference between the two was the color of their skin, but this stood and still stands to be a problem between people. There were many things done to help enforce the separation between whites and colored. Two main things that had a huge impact on racism, were the Jim Crow Laws and the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
When we look at the issue of racism from a politically correct, nineties perspective, evidence of the oppression of black people may be obscured by the ways in which our society deals with the inequalities that still exist. There are no apparent laws that prohibit or limit opportunities for blacks in our society today, yet there is a sense that all things are not fair and equal. How can we acknowledge or just simply note how past ideologies are still perpetuated in our society today? We can examine conditions of the present day in consideration of events in the past, and draw correlations between old and modern modes of thinking. Attitudes of racism within the institutions of education, employment and government are less blatant now than in the day of Frederick Douglass, none the less, these attitudes prevail.
In the 1940‘s racial segregation gripped southern American life. The notion of separating blacks from whites created immense tension. Separate water fountains, bathrooms, restaurants, etc. were variables that helped keep races apart. “Jim Crow” laws in the south were intended to prevent blacks from voting. These laws, combined with the segregated educational system, instilled the sense that blacks were “separate” but not equal (174). Many people of color weren‘t able to survive through this time period because of the actions of whites. One individual who overcame the relentless struggles was Ralph Ellison. Ellison, a famous author, depicted racial segregation in the 1940’s through a fictional short story entitled “Battle Royal.” Battle Royal symbolized the actions of what “other” people became accustomed to. Blacks were thought to be socially inferior and live in the shadows of whites. The idea which Ellison uses to paint “Battle Royal” consists of that when one sex or race treats another as an object or animal, both become dehumanized (174). Ellison’s use of hidden meanings conveys his theme more effectively.
