“Darkness can’t drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate can’t drive out hate;only love can do that.” -Martin Luther King Jr. The Novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is about a southern family that lives in the 1930’s which was one of the most brutal worst times to be alive if you are black. You can get lynched, everyone is extremely racist, you can’t do anything to stand up for yourself, and there are rules that says blacks can’t share the same bathrooms, schools, buses, and even water fountains. But somehow the Logan’s manage to hang tight and not give up. But, they had something all family’s wished they had in that time period there own land. And that land is the one thing that held the Logan family together and encouraged them to keep working and …show more content…
not give up. Courage is something that allows a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, without fear. In the Novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry there are several characters who have demonstrated an enormous amount of courage. For Example, Mr. Morrison was really courageous because he stood up for himself on the railroad and then he lost his job. But, he knew that he would lose his job and not have a place to live but, he did not care to think of the consequences that he would have to face if he stood up for himself. But, he knew that something was wrong so he stood up for himself. And Mr.Morrison moved Kaleb Wallace's car even though he knew that he could get hurt. And he knew that he was one of the night men and they could lynch him. And hurt the Logan’s who where a family that he lived with. And Mr. Morrison did something really courageous when T.J and Stacey got in a fight down at the wallace store and they were fighting in the middle of a group of drunk white men (the Wallaces) and he went in the middle and seperated the boys and got yelled at by the Wallaces. Also he beat up white men and that was really courageous because he could have gotten killed. How was this courageous: Mr. Morrison is courageous in the book and the movie because it takes lots of courage to stand up to a white man that works for the riches/ most powerful person in the county. And that Kaleb Wallace could do anything he wanted about it. And standing up to any white person is very courageous. Explain another person that showed courage:Papa and Uncle Hammer showed courage in the book and the movie. For an example, they went to pay off their debt but, then the bank gave them more that they had to pay off. And when they payed off there debt in the movie Harlan Granger came out and was mad. And that took a lot of courage to make Harlan Granger mad because he was the most powerful man in the town he was really rich. And something that Uncle Hammer did that took lots of courage is to make Kaleb wallace think that he was Harlan Granger because he had the same car as him. Also it was extremely courageous for Papa at the end of the book to burn ⅓ of there cotton. So that the Night Men would not lynch T.J. Or any of the Avery family members. How was this courageous: Papa and Uncle Hammer was very courageous in the book/movie I think this because it takes courage to make the most powerful and rich man that works with the bank mad. Explain another person that showed courage: And I feel that T.J and Stacey where courageous. I think this because Stacey had the courage to fight T.J in the middle of drunk white men ( wallaces ) And I think that that would also take courage from T.J as well. Because they knew that the Wallaces could hurt them and it is dangerous to be around them when they are drunk. Especially because Kaleb Wallace does not like them and all black people. Also I think that it took lots of courage for Stacey to take the blame for what T. J did. And he knew that he did but, he got whipped instead of telling the truth. And I think that it took lots of courage but, it was also a very stupid decision because he decided to be friends with Melvin and R.W even though he knew that there dad and them hate black people. It also was very courageous for him to threaten R.W and Melvin at the end of the book and tell them that he would tell people what they did if they wouldn’t take him home and leave. And I think one of the most courageous things that Stacey did was at the end of the book he told his siblings to go home and get there papa before they lynch T.J or hurt them even more. And Stacey was all alone in the middle of the night in the woods. And that took lots of courage. How was this courageous: I think that this was courageous because getting in the middle of a group of drunk white men can be very dangerous. And also I think that not taking the blame for something like cheating when you know that it’s your bestfriend who was cheating. That took courage because he knew that he would get whipped if he did not tell the truth. And also it was courageous to threaten a white person for once. And then get beat up and ask the person you completely left and wants nothing to do with them and then ask them for help. Explain Another person that showed courage: I think that Cassie and all of the Logan’s family friends did courageous thing in the book/movie I think this because Cassie had the courage to grad Lillian Jean’s hair and yell at her and tell her to not tell anyone about what she did or she would completely humiliate her in front of everyone and her crush. And another thing that Cassie did that I think was courageous was when she went down to Strawberry for the first time. And she had the courage to tap and pull on Mr. barnet’s shirt and tell him that he was helping them before he was helping that white girl. And then Stacey pulled her out of the store and she wanted to go back in that store even when Mr. Barnett said never to come back. And I think the family’s and friends of the Logan family decided to listen and not shop at the Wallace store and make them mad. I think that was very courageous on Mama and the friends/families part. Because they decided to put their families to risk of getting hurt by the night men. But, they did not care they did not want to support the Wallace store. How was this courageous: I think that this was courageous because Cassie having courage to rip a white girls hair is very courage especially because she knows that if anyone finds out they can do something about it. Because whites could do whatever they wanted. There was no law against whites not being able to hurt blacks. In the play, “ Teen Freedom Fighters” the character shows a tremendous amount of courage by peacefully protesting and standing up for their right to vote.
For an Example Mr. Morrison stood up to the guy that he was working for on the railroad and he knew that something bad could happen but, he did anyways. And I think this courageous act relates to what Lynda when she was arguing with the sheriff Jim Clark about the cell being to small and she had the courage to take the broom that the sheriff gives her to clean up barf. And smashes the window and yells “HELP! HELP US, ANYONE, PLEASE! Even though she knew that she could get in trouble she still did it. And when she did do that the sheriff was furious. And I think that the Logan Family and their friends where courageous when they did a peaceful protest because the Logans got threatened by Harlan Granger because the Logan’s were encouraging people to not shop at the Wallace store but, in Vicksburg. And I think this act relates to when the marchers nervously stand there ground even though sheriff Clark told them to turn around. And Sheriff and his group charges at the group and stops there peaceful protest to be able to vote without having to pass a impossible
test. I think that Mr.Morrison showed the most courage in the book because it takes lots of courage to stand up to white men, beat up white men, and picked up a white mans car. That was all very courageous and he did it without thinking twice. Even though he knew that he could have gotten killed. “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” -Martin Luther King Jr.
Currently in the United States of America, there is a wave a patriotism sweeping across this great land: a feeling of pride in being an American and in being able to call this nation home. The United States is the land of the free and the home of the brave; however, for the African-American citizens of the United States, from the inception of this country to midway through the twentieth century, there was no such thing as freedom, especially in the Deep South. Nowhere is that more evident than in Stories of Scottsboro, an account of the Scottsboro trials of 1931-1937, where nine African-American teenage boys were falsely accused of raping two white girls in Scottsboro, Alabama and no matter how much proof was brought forth proving there innocence, they were always guilty. This was a period of racism and bigotry in our country that is deeply and vividly portrayed though different points of view through author James E. Goodman.
In the book Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, the author describes what her reactions and feelings are to the racial hatred and discrimination she and eight other African-American teenagers received in Little Rock, Arkansas during the desegregation period in 1957. She tells the story of the nine students from the time she turned sixteen years old and began keeping a diary until her final days at Central High School in Little Rock. The story begins by Melba talking about the anger, hatred, and sadness that is brought up upon her first return to Central High for a reunion with her eight other classmates. As she walks through the halls and rooms of the old school, she recalls the horrible acts of violence that were committed by the white students against her and her friends.
The Jim Crow Laws were the basis of everyday interactions between black and white people in the South. Melba Beals and the other “Little Rock Nine” braving the walk towards the doors of Central High School and several other landmark events spearheading the demise of these laws. In the book “Warriors Don’t Cry”, Melba Beals recalls her life during the 1950’s in America. In the south, more specifically Little Rock, the Jim Crow laws were no longer contested.
King reminds the reader that racial injustices engulf the community by stating, “Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the united states. Its ugly record of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatments in the courts. There have been many bombings of Negro homes and Churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation. These are hard, brutal facts.”
Racism is an attribute that has often plagued all of American society’s existence. Whether it be the earliest examples of slavery that occurred in America, or the cases of racism that happens today, it has always been a problem. However, this does not mean that people’s overall opinions on racial topics have always stayed the same as prior years. This is especially notable in the 1994 memoir Warriors Don’t Cry. The memoir occurred in 1957 Little Rock, Arkansas and discusses the Melba Pattillo Beals attempt to integrate after the Brown vs. Board of Education court case. Finally, in Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals discusses the idea that freedom is achievable through conflicts involving her family, school life, and friends.
Martin Luther King once said, "we must live together as brothers or perish as fools." This statement illuminates the importance of the features of concern, compassion, and knowledge. The color of a person’s skin tone would result in harsh and unfair treatment. Even though they would be alienated by their peers and others, many African Americans chose to stand up for their rights. These truths were revealed when the famous little rock nine took their courageous stand regardless of their odds. In the novel, Warriors don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals and a Roundtable discussion facilitated by NBC news, the disturbing truths behind the struggles of integration are brought to life.
Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...
This household had very little to live on, but kept trying and trying and never gave up. In the story Papa may have worked all day twenty-four seven and was frequently gone for long periods of time, but he did it because he loved them and would do anything in order to survive. Papa’s actions motivate people to work hard to achieve a good life for their family. During this book you are also inspired to treat all people equally. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry expresses this by showing you what white people did to blacks and how the Blacks felt about being blamed for everything. This makes you want to treat all people equally because it makes you stop and think about how you would feel if you were in the shoes of the person being blamed most times when they did
Prejudice is a cancer that spreads hate among its perpetrators and victims alike. In 1930 Langston Hughes penned the novel, Not Without Laughter. This powerful story, written from the perspective of an African-American boy named James “Sandy” Rodgers, begins in the early 1900’s in the small town of Stanton, Kansas. Through the eyes of young Sandy, we see the devastating impact of racism on his family and those they are close to. We also see how the generations of abuse by whites caused a divide within the black community. Among, and even within, black families there were several social classes that seemed to hinge on seeking equality through gaining the approval of whites. The class someone belonged to was determined by the color of their skin, the type of church one attended, their level of education, and where an individual was able to find work.
Most people stand up and show courage when one is getting treated wrongly and unfairly. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor, Stacey had to show courage when him and his family is being faced with racial discrimination. Stacey is in 7th grade and has 3 other siblings, He has to show courage for his big family. Stacey had to show courage when:he took blame for T.J.´s cheat notes, planning to stop the school bus and taking T.J. home.
An important idea in the novel "Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry" written by Mildred D Taylor is racism. This idea is important because it tells us how life was in the 1930s for a little black girl who matures with racial conflict around her.
Deep South of America, in the 1930's and covers a year in the life of
In the novel “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,” Mildred D. Taylor implemented many themes that slowly developed throughout the story. One of the more obvious themes was courage, when the Logans faced trouble to protect their family, themselves, or just bring justice. Another theme that worked it’s way through the story was the love of family, when the Logans or even other people took risky actions to protect or even just elate their family. Finally, perhaps the most evident theme that progressed throughout the story was racism, when white people dissed black people for no good reason other than to make themselves feel better. There were other noticeable themes that appeared in the book, but of all the themes, courage, the love
Racial injustice is discrimination against an individual as a result of the colour of their skin and is expressed in a variety of ways in ‘Roll of thunder, hear my cry’ because the author Mildred D Taylor wants to show how hard life was in the 1930s at Mississippi for black skinned people. The author achieves this by using a range of language techniques, for example metaphors, informal language and sensory imagery that creates an atmosphere we can empathize with. Cassie, who is the protagonist, looks after her family in any way possible. At the start she doesn’t know much about the ‘devilish night men’ but as injustice becomes worse, she can see they aren’t very friendly.
Courage is when you keep on pushing, and pushing, until you get to the next level and don’t let anyone get in your way ,no matter what happens. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry By:Mildred D. Taylor, there is a sassy young girl named Cassie Logan. She is always sassy and she stands up for what she believes in and never lets anyone let her down. Cassie shows courage when she stood up to the Simm’s, when it was the first day of school for Little man, and when Cassie helped T.J. whenever he was hurt very badly. Cassie’s actions show that she isn’t afraid to stand up for her beliefs and her actions also show that she is very brave and wont let anyone stand in her way.
