What is racism? Racism is a short word with a long history in the United States of America. According to Dictionary.com racism is “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others”. Racism is a powerful idea that was invented by society. The world is aware of the violence that comes from racisms. Many anti racism groups have come out to protest in the hopes of ending racism. However society to this day faces ignorance and hatred toward others.
Racism first originated from the European era of exploration. Europeans like Christopher Columbus traveled overseas where they encountered peoples of Africa, Asia and Americas. These people were then colonized because they looked talked and acted differently from

them. Scientist and nationalist then took these differences and classified them into systems which then became the base of racism. The first laborers were European servants. Afterwards African labors were brought to Virginia in 1619. Over time things changed, a person’s status was based off of physical differences and skin colour in regards to wealth and knowledge. Africans were transported to America and sold throughout the continent. Soon many landowners replaced their European laborers with African slaves. At this point in time society did not believe in human rights and there were no anti racism groups at the time. The Abolitionism movement was the first to take a stance against racism.
Although society felt strong about the movement during the 1820s they did not consolidate into a militant crusade until the 1830s. The goal of the Abolitionist movement was to immediately liberate all slaves and end racial discrimination and segregation. The people of the Second Great Awakening, which was a religious revival movement during the early 19th century in the United States, supported the Abolitionist movement. The support of the Second Great Awakening prompted many people to advocate for the liberation of slaves on religious grounds. In addition Quakers who are members of a religious Christian group known as the Religious Society of Friends in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and parts of North America, were the first whites to denounce slavery in the American colonies and Europe. Societies has been against racism from the very start but even with these anti-racism campaigns people still have not learned the importance of civility towards other
races. Today’s society still faces racism. Throughout the past year(s) there have been many incidents regarding racism, the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin resulted in a huge social media call to action called, #Blacklivesmatter their ideology was to create a world where black lives are not systematically and intentionally targeted for crimes. The movement rapidly grew as celebrities and politicians were quick to support the cause. Soon the American police force was exposed of their abusive power and excessive brutality on black males. Videos of police beating and killing black males spread all throughout social media. According to mappingpoliceviolence.org police killed 336 black people in the United States in 2015. Out of the 336 people killed 102 were identified as unarmed and only 9 out of the 102 cases resulted in officers being charged with a crime. That is to say racism still exists. As racism develops so does the violence. Protests have always been about peace; recently protests have become extremely violent. People seem to be getting frustrated about how these past events have not solved much and that racism is still a problem. With frustration comes anger and with anger comes violence. On April 12, 2015, Freddie Carlos Gray Jr. was arrested in Baltimore for what police alleged was an illegal switchblade. While being transported in a police van, Gray suffered many injuries that lead to him suffering from a coma. On April 19, 2015, Gray was pronounced dead his cause of death was due to a spinal cord injury that police say occurred during transportation. When the story hit the media eyewitnesses stated that Gray was illegally arrested before police acknowledged the knife. On April 25, 2015, the city of Baltimore held a large protest in the downtown area. The protest turned violent resulting in injury of 20 police officers, 250 arrests, 285 to 350 business damaged, 150 vehicle fires and 60 structure fires. After Gray’s funeral, on April 27, 2015, civilian riots increased, people were looting and burning local business and CVS drug stores. On May 1, 2015 Gray’s death was ruled as a homicide the officer driving that van during Gray’s transportation was charge with second degree “deprived heart” murder and the other officers involved were charged with reckless endangerment. The state of emergency was then lifted on May 6, 2015. All this violence could easily been avoided if the police officers involved followed protocol. In addition, the 2016 presidential election has been one of the most interesting/racial presidential elections I have ever seen. Donald Trump is running for president, not only is he suggesting horrible ideas but he openly makes racist comments about Muslims and Islam. In one of his speeches he says “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our countries representative can figure out what the hell is going on” Although this statement goes against the Bill of Rights of the United Sates many Americans support Trumps decisions which may lead to his victory. If Trump wins this presidential election it may result in more violent protests and maybe a war. Society has come a long way since the beginning of racism but even through all the historical events people still have not learned how to live peacefully. As a kid I went to public school where I grew up with kids of various cultures. Growing up my teachers would always ask the question will racism ever end. My answer to this question was always yes the reason being is because my generation is growing up in a multicultural society where we learn not to discriminate against one other based of the color of their skin or their cultural differences. Aside from this, society will always face racism even though scientist tells us that all humans share a common ancestry. There are always those people in the world that thrive on the idea of having power and are willing to do horrible things to inherit that position.

When using racism one may use a person’s skin color, language, customs or place of birth the judge them quickly in a negative way. This causes many things to happen such as war, slavery, formation of nations, and legal codes. It has been in human history for a really long time(Racism). Although it was there it wasn't always automatic, but it did end happening at some point or another. When people feel this way about other races they may think of them a subhuman of savages and may want segretain between themselves and the others(Racism). Though some think that race is a good way to classify people scientist say other ways:”There are few genetic characteristics to be found in England that are not found in Zaire or China…the differences that most deeply affect us in our dealings with each other ar not to any significant degree biologically determined”(Racism). So it is scientifically proven that using race to judge someone isn't really fair because they could be more genetically connected to you that you

Why feel superior if God created everyone equal and there is not one inferior. Over the history there has been many cases of racism. Also known as the Second Great Awakening, the Abolitionist Movement swept through the colonies in the early 1830’s. This was a movement to abolish slavery and to give blacks their freedom as citizens. Many men and women, free and enslaved, fought for this cause and many were imprisoned or even killed for speaking out. If it were not for these brave people, slavery would still exist today. The Abolitionist Movement paved the way in eradicating slavery by pursuing moral and political avenues, providing the foundation for the Underground Railroad, and creating a voice for African Americans.

On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This document eradicated the over 200-year institution of slavery by making it illegal in the rebellious states during the civil war. Although many people give Lincoln credit for freeing the slaves, the truth is, slavery would have been prolonged in the Unites States (U.S) if the abolitionists did not pressure southerners and argue for the abolishment of slavery in the U.S. When examining a closer look into the abolition movement, the movement gained the most support from citizens when a slave rebellion took place. Usually, the harsh outcome of slave rebellions gave abolitionists a greater reason to fight for the abolishment of slavery, but any form of rebellion became

Racism and social disadvantage being the by-products of Australian colonisation have become reality for Aboriginal people from the early beginnings as well as being prevalent to this day. There exists a complex and strong association between racism and Aboriginal poor health, assisting in the undermining of the emotional and social wellbeing of this Indigenous group.
