Racism is the prejudice or discrimination of difference races and the idea that one race or color skin is superior than another. In the past, countless millions have suffered due to the bias, bigotry, and prejudice by people who could not accept differences among one another. Even today, people are judged just based on their skin color, and most of Americans tends to discriminate against another in some way. What is the causing racism and why do we act in a such manner? To understand racism, we need to know what is making people act racist. In America, fear is the primary cause of racism. What is fear? We all grow up in a particular environment with a particular type of people, and may never come in contact with people of certain races. Even if you do, you likely won’t get to know them on a personal level. And to most of us, the great unknown is perceived as fear. So if you grew up in a such environment, how does he or she get information of another races? Majority people relies on media and internet for information in modern society. People forge their ideas and make judgement of another based on information obtained from news, articles, and online blogs. For my mother for example, she is afraid of Black and Latino males simply based on horrifying news such as murder incidents. Not only that, she will tell me not to go near Black or Latino neighborhood out of fear that I might get involved in a brutal incident. Is my mother giving me an advice based on a personal experience? No, she formed her prejudice based solely on medias and alike. And just like my mother, most of us form our bias, bigot, and prejudicial belief based on limited information fed to us instead of thinking for ourselves. However, our attitude towards others is not only based on limited information fed to us, but also based on our ignorance. We humans tend to judge others on the basis of limited knowledge especially if they are different from us.
