The newspaper has a way of swaying the audience one way or another, capturing them with sensationalist titles and material. Falsified ideas are spread unbeknownst to the reader because they take what they read as truth. Racialization was a practice that the media used to segregate a group of people and ascribe certain stereotypes to fulfill a certain idea that was comfortable to them. The assimilation of various races in American culture was discouraged and to be avoided, an idea that Sui Sin Far reinforced in her short story “It’s Wavering Image”. The pure act of the story being written brought upon different initial reactions to the main characters regarding racial injustice. Mark Carson’s identity was that of an unscrupulous reporter for a white newspaper and each story was a cathartic release, his “clear” and “clever” eyes could deceive even the most suspicious person. He was illustrated as a man who would “sell his soul for a story” (86). He was a man driven by professionalism in a way that was debilitating to those around him. For him, writing this story was the crux of his career and he did not see the implications that were generated from exposing falsities of an entire race. For this reason, he exposed the customs and ideas that they held dear to them without their consent, especially without Pan’s consent. He was described as being received as a “brother” (87) while with Pan and used this to his full advantage only to gather material for his article. Pan suffered from his actions emotionally as he brushed her aside once the article came to completion, the sight of the article burning “red hot; agony unrelieved by words, unassuaged by tears” (91). The article by Min Zhou titled "Are Asian Americans becoming "white"? was relatively interesting as it provides a look at a different perspective of Asian Americans regarding immigration. I found it particularly interesting to learn that Asian Americans are considered to be white in equal opportunity programs; however, the race is still seen as different from Americans of European ancestry. Furthermore, I was not shocked to read that Zhou described the Asian American race as the "model minority." When first looking at the reading, I was shocked by the title because I thought it was a little exaggerated. She chooses to cite only academic publications, Canadian governmental documents, and local newspaper articles in her long list of sources, none of which provide perspective from the people around which the article is centered; the Chinese. This highlights the key issue within the article; whilst Anderson meticulously examines how Chinatown is simply a construction of white supremacists, she ignores what life was actually like for the area’s inhabitants, and how the notion of ‘Chinatown’ may have become a social reality for those living in it. The article, “I Don’t See Race; I Only See Grayish-Brown, Vaguely Humanoid Shapes,” mocks individuals who make explicit claims about how they are not racist. This article is an oped piece in which a fictional writer starts off by denying the existence of racial tensions and institutional racism within America. She supports this by claiming that it is impossible for the mindset of a modern American to adopt racist ideologies because it is impossible for one to view humans as anything more than, ”muted, roughly person-shaped silhouettes”. The op-ed then degenerates into a metaphysical questioning of the nature of human beings and her lack of ability to even perceive basic human attributes. The fault portrayed in the writer is that as she attempts to depict her own lack of racial bias, she denies the existence of racial diversity itself. Her line of reasoning is mocked as she extends it to a broader and broader scope until she claims that human life is an insignificant and mundane product of our universe. Her ideologies are never once directly criticized, only mocked through her flawed reasoning. In addition, the character of the writer herself is not the object or criticism, rather the ideology she presents is the object of criticism. Elias Boudinot’s speech “An Address to the Whites” was first given in the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, in May 1826. The speech sought white American support of the Cherokees in further assimilation into white society and for aid in this endeavour, as well as making a case for coexistence in an effort to protect the Cherokee Nation. Specifically, the “Address to the Whites” was part of Boudinot’s fundraising campaign for a Cherokee assembly and newspaper. Race: The Power of an Illusion was an interesting 3 part film. After watching this, it made me questioned if race was really an illusion or not. It is absolutely taboo to think that the one thing that separates people the most may be a myth in itself. “We can 't find any genetic markers that are in everybody of a particular race and in nobody of some other race. I also researched instances of counter actions taken by Asian Americans to protest against these negative images. My research also has examples of Asians that have succeeded in breaking through the racial barriers in the media. The results show that even though racial stereotyping still exists in various forms of mass media, there are signs that show noticeable improvement in allowing a more balanced image of Asian Americans. Statement of the Problem There are close to 12 million Asian Americans living in the United States (U.S. Asian, 2000).
