What Is Harry Potter Racial Stereotypes

The Harry Potter film series was theoretically meant to be produced as a series where success is achieved through people’s abilities and is oblivious to their race. But throughout the film series, the audience discovers that beneath the surface there are still many underlying themes of racial prejudice forms and vilification. The film series of Harry Potter displays traditional racial attitudes though the majority of all main actors/ characters who are classed as ‘white’ and Anglo-Saxon. To complement this theme traditional stereotypes are also exposed throughout the films, for example character’s names holding an underlying meaning exercising the idea of “white” being good and “black” being bad. On the other hand, to contradict this, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Sirius Black (last name Black meaning dark and sinister) is portrayed to be a fearful fugitive serial killer, who had escaped from Azkaban prison. But in truth Sirius is very protective of his friends and is a man of great principle, he is also a great man, always sticking to his word. Harry and the audience discover this personal truth, as it is realised that he is just as hurt and broken as Harry is, it also turns out Sirius is Harry’s godfather. Sirius even explains to Harry that “we’ve all got Light and Darkness inside of us, what matters is what part we choose to act on… that’s who we really are."
