Grouping has been very important for human development. However, there is a fundamental loop on it; it restricts characteristics to certain groups. The separation of humanity between groups highlights features of other groups as either bad or good. Stereotypes is the tool to judge and generalize characteristics among the classification of people. This tool is dangerous to society and its interactions because it limits social, academic and work opportunities. In essence, the Great Awakening was a religious awakening. It started in the South. Tent camps were set up that revolve around high spirited meetings that would last for days. These camp meetings were highly emotional and multitudes of people were filled with the Spirit of God. Such thinking ignores many even-tempered redheads and generous Scottish people. Stereotyping emphasizes many differences between groups while ignoring their similarities to other people. It ignores that many blond and brown-haired people also lose their tempers. Stereotyping overlooks the fact that many American, Brazilians and French people are stingy.
In many circles of the world, various groups of people distinguish themselves from one another through religion, language, culture, and sometimes gender. People also develop stereotypes about a particular group of people in order to identify them. However, most of the time, these stereotypes hold true for only some members of a group. Sometimes, these stereotypes are just plain misconceptions that do not even apply to the group it claims to. Stereotypes are placed on people because it is a way to easily identify what type of person or ethnicity an individual is. It is true that how people are perceived has a big impact on how other individuals interact with them; however, people are not perceiving these groups correctly.

Although some stereotypes have been proven to be correct and positive, most are false and are extremely negative. Stereotypes are extremely hard to fight in our society because they can be both implicit and explicit. Explicit stereotypes are those that are more recent and controlled (lecture, 6/3). People who are openly racist towards African Americans have explicit stereotypes. Implicit stereotypes are those that are based off of emotion, early experience and emotion (lecture 6/3). These are especially tricky because we may not be completely aware that they exist in our minds, which means they are extra difficult to change. Stereotypes can also be dangerous because they affect the way we think and behave. For example, they affect our attributions or our “explanations for behavior” (lecture 10/15/14). There are many errors associated with attributions, the ultimate of these errors being stereotype driven attributions. The concept of stereotypes is what we have been created in our presumptions of a person without even having an idea of how they are. It is a common thing in our society on which sometimes it can create tolerance or intolerance toward other groups because of different ideas or traditions. The film by Gregory Nava My Family and the book by Victor Martinez Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida are clear examples of the concept of stereotypes. The first characteristic of stereotyping is over-generalisation. A number of studies conducted found that different combinations of traits were associated with groups of different ethnic and national origin (Katz and Braly, 1933). However, stereotyping does not imply that all members of a group are judged in these ways, just that a typical member of a group can be categorised in such judgements, that they possess the characteristics of the group. Still, when we talk of a group, we do so by imagining a member of that group.

Workers are often faced with discrimination and harassment in their work environment, leaving them stuck in a difficult position. Many people suffer because they are the minority in their workplace, leaving them at the bottom of the pyramid. People of the African American ethnicity may work the same position as a person of Caucasian ethnicity but treated as though they are of lower importance. Individuals exposed to racial stereotyping can be detrimental to work performance because of the impact on the mental and physical health of the employees. Racial stereotyping can also affect people’s career outcomes. For example, a person of the Caucasian descent being chosen for a promotion over a person of African American descent simply because of the negative stereotypes associated with many African Americans today. Being biased in this way can be damaging to workplace behavior and inflict job-related stress as well as reduce productivity. Racial stereotyping, whether overt or insidious, can create an unhealthy environment for everyone in the workplace. Creating this atmosphere causes unnecessary tension among employees and can cause damage to an organization’s professional image.
