Race's Role In Unequal Opportunity In Education

Merriam-Webster defines education as “the action or process of educating and the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools.” Ironically, this definition doesn’t entirely pertain to everyone in the United States. Because we are such a blended country, factors such as race, class, and gender can affect the level of education someone can receive. Furthermore, the U.S. has been upholding this inequality since before slavery so people now have to suffer the consequences of unequal opportunities that affect education worldwide.

Many people of color don’t have the same prestige as white people. Some blacks don’t have an educated family background so they lack basic knowledge that white people typically have. The article “teAchnology” suggests that “Very often people from a racial minority group or a lower income family do not have a family history of higher education. If the parents or grandparents have not had access to education, the child that comes from such a family is not likely to have had anybody read to them or even have had to opportunity to be exposed to many books.” Generations of underprivileged blacks come from an uneducated background which leads to a disadvantage when students are placed in classes with more educated students. They article also states that “They may seem like slow learners even though all it really means is that they are getting a late start. The teachers have to be aware of these crucial differences and ensure that these children do not label themselves as weak or poor students.” Therefore, teachers should focus on being encouraging and sensitive to the fact that blacks are in school to obviously obtain information that wasn’t taught or learned in order for them to catch up with other students. Americans whether colored or not, are human beings and should be provided with equal opportunities in the educational
