Race is defined as, “A socio-political concept constructed for social control of subdominant groups” (Levine-Rasky 64). Race can look at individuals features such as skin color, eyes and even hair color, when looking at race it cannot be changed or hidden. Even to tie in ethnicity with race, people view ethnicity as a way of life through a shared culture with different races. Whether its language, religion, culture, food so on and so forth. Race goes beyond colour of our skin, hair and looks but however refers to our genetic history that distinct us from other races. For example, saying that all Caucasians are Canadian doesn’t mean they are from Canada. They could be from Ireland, Australia, or even Russia. Looking at these two concepts race …show more content…

In their days, they had separate washrooms for coloured people. Even when it came to methods of transportation such as a bus, coloured people had to sit in the back of the bus. However, now in today`s modern society 2014, anybody can sit anywhere on the bus because we have a clash of mixes in a working environment. Identity defines our ethnic culture. It separates people from others making them unique and allows them to have a sense of belonging. Ethnicity can be changed but not our race. Race involves cultural aspects such as the religious beliefs people hold. Ethnicity can be associated with power but it often starts as a group statement unconnected to control and material interests. Comparing it to race, race can be seen as a social hierarchy. People sometimes look at the physical traits on how others treat one another on a regular basis whether looking at skin color or the colour or texture of people’s hair. People deny their ethnicity because they feel they will not be accepted so a lot of people brain-wash themselves, denying the truth and in the end do not even know their cultural roots. This is a big issue in race today. When looking at race, there are different levels in our societies whether it is class, religion, languages that are spoken, gender so on and so forth. People’s voice need to be heard and should be allowed freedom of speech instead of labelling people according to color or racial identity. Anti-racism education is to develop the awareness of others in our communities regarding race and racial oppressions. This will help transform the type of education provided by schools. Having the school system place understanding of racism in their curriculum allows students to be aware of their human rights so that students of different races can feel comfortable without having to be discriminated by others. Anti-racism can be viewed in a different way for instance, “within the anti-racist discursive framework there is an understanding that in any social context the effects of social policies and practices will be felt differently by different groups” (Levine-Rasky 57). So it is important that individuals observe the different groups being formed and how certain issues affect each group.
