WHAT WILL YOU DO ONCE YOU SEE THIS HAPPEN AGAIN?
The Royalty Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is a charity founded on 1824 by Arthur Broome, William Wilberforce, and Richard Martin, in Strand, London, and United Kingdom. As of right now, the charity is operating in England and Wales which promotes animal welfare. By stating its ethos, pathos, and logos the RSPCA “Help neglected animals leave their old lives behind” advertisement (see Figure 1), does an outstanding job on the setting and placement of every detail. When I first looked at the ad, the first thing that caught my eye was the horses old for shedding away allowing the new one coming out, another thing would also be the way the background is set. Behind the shedding

skin is a dead, dark, and lonely atmosphere. However, behind the new skin is colorful, bright, alive paradise (see Figure 1) allowing it to persuade animal lovers to help out the mistreated animals? To start off, the RSPCA is a charity that raises money to help out those animals you see in the streets with their rib cage stuck to their fur, ears pointing down, and legs shaking. Not only do they help them by gathering money, but if they find out by an anonymous caller giving away a hint about an animal being abused; the charity sends out their people to investigate more about the case to see if they can do something about, once facts are found the law will also interfere with the pets’ owner. RSPCA’s campaigns are intended to raise the standards of care and awareness of issues for the “animals who have no voice.” –RSPCA. If we can all get involved in the movement, they can make an effort into laws changing, improving the welfare of animals on farms, research labs, and the wild, in paddocks or in our home. To my point of view, this ad is convincing in the way the features on the horse are displayed. Old skin shedding, life coming back to him while walking into a whole new world, (see Figure 1) this ad really hits you hard with the image; makes you think twice. The “Help neglected animals leave their old lives behind.” (See Figure 1) Ad definitely portrays animal lovers all kinds of ages because no matter how old or young you are you will always get that knot In your stomach when seeing a hopeless animal not being able to live the life they are supposed; to due to the owner not being responsible.
The reason we weren’t as aware of animal cruelty was because this entire social media was not as common as it is now, this new technology, the whole phone apps, you can find out someone’s life in just a click of a button even if they are on the other side of the world. It is way too advanced, in a way it benefits us though let me tell you why. Because of social media we get to see citizen reporting’s of cases happening in their community, for example; they see something wrong with a dog tied up in a tree with a 10lb. chain, no shade nor water what are they going to do? Take out their phone and snap a picture for evidence, once they take it, too Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. they begin to write a whole article of what they saw and believe and the friends start commenting, liking, and sharing so that the friends of their friends can see as well. TV shows are another resource that can show you how to look for signs of animal abuse on animals which in my opinion is great idea because no animal deserves to suffer. The ad is perfectly invoking that sorrow type of emotion, because it makes you feel just as the horse
looks. One technique successfully used by the RSPCA in this ad has to be the layout of all the detail within the image. The horse could have had a spotlight aimed at him directly while lying on the ground the size of a twig, but not in this case. Although the horse is still in the middle of the picture, the way it is detailed is so simple, yet it shows a whole lot. Who could have ever thought that just an image of a horse getting his good life back would be so conveying. The horse’s fur was the first thing that caught my eye in this picture, it looks so real and vivid hanging of its body while he is standing facing the colorful paradise while leaving his old life in the dull section. The way the foreground is set to be dark, lonely and just dirt no grass I think is a great idea because they are trying to represent death and to me that would remind me of a cemetery, nothing but dry dirt. In the other hand, the piece of land it is looking and seems its going towards looks bright with green grass and nice blue clouds unlike the other cloudy charcoal gray colors. The main detail is the fur falling off though; dirty, old, mistreated fur leaving and allowing the new, clean one to come out and make the horse look decent while the old one just hangs off him. “Help neglected animals leave their old lives behind.” Is a very powerful quote even though it is a short one it says a whole lot with just those eight words, it is telling you exactly what we would do if we were to join the RSPCA help animals go back to their old nice life and leave their old mistreated one behind them. For the most part, I believe if I would have been browsing around a magazine and I would have bumped into this Public Service Announcement I would’ve fell for it because of the poor animal. They did an awesome job lying everything out the font is perfect, the size and color of it as well, I do not think it has any mistakes because this ad sure did persuade me, but then again why wouldn’t it like the quote, “I respect animals more than people – we’re the ones messing up this world, not them.” -Anonymous
What a good way to urge viewers to donate money than by showing in the commercial pictures of sorry looking animals? The type of objects they use are cages, crates, and the animals. It targets any animal or anybody in reality because they can see that these animals are in need of help, also that these animals have been abused. This commercial has demographic is an extremely important factor in commercial productions, the fact that so many different people are susceptible to the pathos of the commercial to the point of tears. This commercial had a use of music and it also plays an important role in the use of pathos. The song “In the arms of an Angel” by Sarah MacLauchlan has a part that makes me sad every time I seen the commercial “There always some reason, to feel not good enough” (Sarah McLachlan SPCA, n.d.) and this is sad because these animals don’t feel good enough and you can tell by their
Upon first receiving this assignment I was honestly not sure what I would do it on. Then I remember a very well done commercial from 2006. If you’re not sure what commercial I am referencing it is the ASPCA commercial with all the injured animals and "arms of an angel" playing in the background; furthermore, Sarah McLachlan voices over and stars in the commercial. The commercial does a good job of appealing to animal lovers sense of emotion (Pathos) through the photos and videos of helpless and beaten animals. Sarah McLachlan also appeals to animal lovers through the fact that she has been a longtime supporter of the ASPCA (Ethos). Also, the video includes statistics that can easily be proven these statistics help to support the commercials cause (logos). Finally, the commercial itself appeared on television which is a great medium to get a message across; in addition, this commercial is valid in any year and will always appeal to a
As the ad begins it shows a beautiful farm with stables and pastures. Then it goes to the farmer looked through a barred window wearing a Budweiser hat. Then you see what he is looking at, a baby foal sitting in the hay after being born. The foal is slightly skittish when the farmer approaches him. You can see the trust start to form as the foal allows the farmer to hold and pet him as he is bottle fed. You can see the bond start to build. It goes ahead in time and the foal has ground and lets the farmer walk him around,
These commercials make the audience feel fear, love, guilt, or joy about the situation being shown. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA for short shows commercials to get donations that will help prevent animal cruelty and rescue animals all across the country. I have not seen this commercial on any of the apps on my phone however this is a commercial that I see often on regular television. The target audience of these commercials is animal lovers; it could be a child or an adult. The use of Pathos in the promotion of joining the ASPCA or giving a one-time donation uses animals that look sad, hurt, homeless, abused or scared needing help. It is very effective as it makes the intended audience either want to donate to help the animals or to rescue one through adoption to give it a better life. The type of music played goes along with the feeling of sadness and helplessness that the animals are feeling and makes the audiences feel sad as well. These commercials also either use the voice of a celebrity or show the celebrity holding a dog or cat while giving information about how to help the animals. The audience is shown abused, beaten, or neglected animals and asked for donations to help give medical care, food, shelter, and love to them. The commercial is effective as it pulls at the emotions of animal lovers
In an article describing the entire series of ASPCA ads that Sarah McLachlan appears in, the author states “that simple pitch has raised roughly $30 million for the organization since the advertisements started running in early 2007, making it the A.S.P.C.A.’s most successful fund-raising effort” (Strom). This article goes on to explain that many viewers are compelled to donate because they feel empowered whereas the animals being shown are helpless; the ads make the viewers feel like they can make a huge difference and this is a major advertising strategy. After further researching the success of this advertisement, it became clear that this method was not only used by the ASPCA but also in many other commercials that are aiming for donations from the viewers. It is found that people “are particularly sympathetic and likely to donate when they see sad expressions versus happy or neutral expressions” (Small & Verrochi). Based on this research, it is intentional that victims are pictured on charity appeals, such as this one, to elicit the responses that are believed to engender prosocial behavior. With that said, it is not a surprise that these ads were successful in bringing in donations for the
Advertisements across the globe are becoming more and more violent. In a recent PETA ad, it depicts a naked woman with a meat diagram on her, as seen on pigs and cows. In this ad it reads “ALL ANIMALS have the same parts. Have a heart. Go vegetarian.” This ad is degrading towards a woman because the advertisement is directly comparing her to an animal. PETA is taking their advertisements to a whole new level in the wrong direction. In society people do not consider themselves animals. In fact, being called an animal is an insult to many people. For PETA to comment that this woman is an ...
This advertisement shows us logos by making people think about domestic violence. When you look at the big boot, obviously worn by a man is stepping on top of a small women’s shoe, it automatically makes you think about domestic violence. As quoted, “When he controls your life, it’s no longer your life.” This quote is powerful and directly speaks to the women who are in controlling abusive relationships. It also speaks to people who know someone who is being abused and that they should speak out. It pulls you into the sad scene with the dark lighting all around almost making it seem suffocating, which causes the small woman’s shoe to seem unimportant, compared to the big muddy boot that is trapping it. It logically makes someone
In conclusion, the ASPCA is a significant, charitable organization that has taken a powerful stance towards anti-cruelty of all animals. Dating back to the 1860's and continuing to thrive today with new programs that reach out to community leaders, businesses, and lawmakers, all for the abandonment of cruel actions towards animals. Accolades to Henry Bergh for his diligence towards establishing laws to protect animals against violence, and more importantly for raising awareness of animal abuse, and the misuse of breeding. The ASPCA is a worthy cause, and its mission is valuable to all animal lovers in our nation.
The first animal welfare organization, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), was founded in 1824 in London to promote the protection of domestic animals.
A person looking at the Humane Society ad might overlook and not notice the black shadow of a man holding a fist. It takes a glace or two to notice the shadow, but it comes from the left corner of the page. It reaches across until the arm of the man is extended and a fist is formed. The fist is directly over the dogs head with the intent of hitting it. The advertisers know that the reader is going to notice an abused dog, but not necessarily the shadow of a violent man in the background. The shadow represents the dark and sad meaning of this advertisement. It shows how violence is directly related to the dog’s sympathetic and innocent look. The advertisers intend to scare the reader with the shadow and hope the reader to take action against animal cruelty. This could possibly overwhelm the reader with anger and lead them into wanting to find out information to help out.
An analysis of the signs and symbols used in Patek Philippe Geneve's "Begin your own tradition" advert.
Television commercials are television programming produced by any organisation to provide message in the market about their product or services. It is one of the most popular methods to attract customer and provide them information about their products or services.
Abuse towards animals is recognized by many in the commercials shown on television, including the Sarah McLaughlin song and the pictures of animals starved and beaten. The commercials are shown quite regularly and give viewers a small look into the world of animal cruelty. What the commercials do not show, however, are the countless cases of people getting away with violence, as well as the hundreds of thousands of animals who did not live to make the commercials. Television, radio, and internet ads often depict and portray the lives of animals living in shelters, and ask the public to donate money each month for the cause. Without a doubt, this is the extent of what many people can say their experience with animal cruelty consists of: pictures and short video clips of half-dead dogs and cats left to die in over-crowded housing.
The world is constantly trying to invent and find new forms of entertainment. This being said, people often find pleasure in watching animals. When thinking about how animals are used in the entertainment industry, it seems that in most cases they are being mistreated. Owners of such animals that are neglected lack the care and knowledge to provide for them. This is a social issue because not only do we use animals for our own enjoyment, but we uproot them from their natural habitats and take them away from their families.
In conclusion I hope to have shed some new light on just what animal cruelty is and what it consists of. I hope that with this information people will be more open to what they see. Hopefully this information will cut down on animal abuse and will make people watch out for mistreatment of animals. I hope that people will think twice before abusing animals. Animals DO have feelings. They may not be able to talk and tell us where it hurts, but they do feel pain just like humans. There are laws to protect animals just like humans. I do not feel as though the laws are strong enough nor are they enforced the way they should.
