What do the following have in common? Dedication, commitment, raising awareness, fund-raising, and life saving programs? That's right! The ASPCA! This organization stands for American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They have accomplished all of the above and much more. From providing millions of animals with adequate shelter, and the proper care they deserve, the ASPCA is a charitable organization that positively impacts the nation. People can only imagine the horror of having to give up a pet for reasons beyond their control, they would be devastated for sure. More importantly, they would want to find a place that would provide their pet with a loving home, and people who would care for it as they have. The ASPCA has a reputation that wouldn't leave pet owners with any doubts about the safety and well-being of their pets.
Founded in 1866, by: Henry Bergh, the ASPCA is the first humane society in America, and one of the largest in the world. Henry's philosophy is that all animals deserve respect by all humans, and must be protected by law (Henry Bergh). In the early years dogs were used to pull carts and work treadmills simply because men couldn't afford horses, but thanks to Henry's diligent efforts, he helped get a law passed prohibiting dogs to work in such environments. The first animal hospital opened in 1912, starting the course for others to follow. Since the ASPCA is privately funded, and a not for profit organization, their supporters reach well over 2 million people. That is very impressive! There are three key factors that keep the ASPCA thriving. They are: the protection for pet parents and pets,

In conclusion, the ASPCA is a significant, charitable organization that has taken a powerful stance towards anti-cruelty of all animals. Dating back to the 1860's and continuing to thrive today with new programs that reach out to community leaders, businesses, and lawmakers, all for the abandonment of cruel actions towards animals. Accolades to Henry Bergh for his diligence towards establishing laws to protect animals against violence, and more importantly for raising awareness of animal abuse, and the misuse of breeding. The ASPCA is a worthy cause, and its mission is valuable to all animal lovers in our nation.

Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized.
