What motivated you to apply for the RA position? What do you hope to gain from being an RA? What skills and attributes would you bring to the position?
Well I think what motivates me the most is my drive to want to help new students feel involved on campus. When I first arrived here, I didn't really know anyone and I was really nervous about the new environment I was in. But every time I would see my RA he was always really nice to me and made me feel welcome. Also the events that he would throw on our floor would create a way for me to get out of my comfort zone and go and meet new people. So like my RA, I want to help students feel more comfortable when they're making the transition to college and maybe help them feel more confident to participate in social events. From being an RA, I hope to gain some experience when it comes to leadership and also some experience with planning events and being creative. What impact does diversity have on a college student’s experience? How can RAs utilize diversity and inclusion to enrich their residents’ experience?
To me diversity means having multiple forms of something or a lot of different versions. Inclusion means to allow someone to be a part of or participate in what you are doing. I think diversity plays a large role in a college student's experience because there are tons of different programs and organizations to join that are all different. I think as an RA, I can utilize diversity and inclusion by never being biased towards who I talk to. I should make sure that I reach out to all of my residents and come up with events that are different and that everyone will be able to participate in and enjoy.

If one looks at the word “Inclusion”, its definition states that the word means being a part of something or the feeling of being part of a whole. By looking at this term, one gets a sense about what inclusion education is all about (Karten p. 2). Inclusion education is the mainstreaming of Special Education students into a regular classroom (Harchik). A school that involves inclusive education makes a commitment to educate each and every student to their highest potential by whatever means necessary (Stout). Their goal is for all children, disabled or not, to be able to attend a typical classroom.
Working with different people is one of things I am excited about being a RA. As I met different people with different cultures, beliefs and worked together in the past, I am certain I know how to interact with them. These experiences taught me how to interact people different from me flexibly, how to withstand pressure and how to use differences as strength. Moreover I have taken several leadership positions before so benefits from those positions would be useful in becoming a RA. A resident assistant should always be caring and protective of his residents. He has to guide them so that they could live in a happy but safe environment. That is what I did when I went to Japan. As I was given the role of leader, I tried to live up to it. So I know the responsibilities of being a leader and how to make decisions for the sake of the team. I think these past experiences would prepare me for this position.
I am applying to Hofstra University because this is a campus where I believe I will continue to flourish both academically and socially. Hofstra has an environment of diversity and inclusion that would cater to my socially inclined personality and ambition to become a healthcare professional. Walking the campus of Hofstra, there is an environment of inclusion at every corner of the campus and within every activity sponsored. Among the different activities and opportunities, such as the Multicultural Organization, the Sororities, the Courtyard Carnival, and especially the “Bring Your Own Bear to Movie Night”, shows that Hofstra is fully immersed and supportive of all types of interests and people. And finally, colleges and universities have to be inclusive of varied student subpopulations. They need to determine and address the special needs of groups such as racial/ethnic minorities, women, athletes, Greeks, students of different ages, and gay and lesbian students.
Statistics show that black students are less likely to earn college degrees (Guiffrida & Douthit 2010). Black students are less likely to graduate than Whites at PWIs and may have a lower GPA. At first, many people wrote this off as them not being prepared academically. However, there are many other factors that influence their success at college that stems away from just the academics. Interaction with faculty, family, friends, and other peers in the Black community all contribute to their experience and success at college. The relationship with faculty is key component when looking at their success at school. Previous studies noted that Black students have a difficult time making connections with White faculty members, because they are concerned about the stereotypes the professors may have about them. However, through proper education, awareness, and truly listening to students’ experiences and concerns, this can change and White faculty members can serve as mentors to students of color. Faculty members need to keep an open mind and be aware of their own biases. Having a strong support system at home also contributes to Black students’ successes and retention rates. Family provides emotional, academic, and sometimes financial support. Participation in affinity groups also help Blacks integrate into the campus community. Inclusion in classrooms is defined as combining students with disabilities and students without disabilities together in an educational environment. It provides all students with a better sense of belonging. They will enable friendships and evolve feelings of being a member of a diverse community (Bronson, 1999). There are many definitions relating to diversity, equity and inclusion that and sometimes the terms used interchangeably. Definitions that are helpful in understand the concepts are as follows. Diversity can be the sum of the ways that people are both alike and different. The dimensions of diversity include race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, culture, regions, mental and physical ability, class, and immigration status. While diversity itself is not value-laden term, the way that people react to diversity is driven by values, attitudes, beliefs, and so on.
