Hi Nilani, I enjoyed reading your perspective on health care quality and the comparison that our social, personal and work life needs continuous improvement just like the health care industry. In addition, I agree with your examples on how Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), State Medicaid Agencies, Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), and Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers (FQHC) used quality improvement measures to improve health outcomes. My favorite quality improvement process is the Plan, Do, Study Act (PDSA) model. I use this model both in my personal and professional like. The PDSA cycle is a systematic series of steps for gaining valuable learning and knowledge for the continual improvement of a product or process (Agency for

Quality and quality improvement are important to any healthcare organization because these principles allows organizations to fulfill their missions more effectively. Defining what quality is may differ depending on whom is asking the question, as differing participates may have differing ideas about what quality means and why it is important. There is a lot of literature on the concept of continuous improvement (CI). Studies show that CI is very important to creating competitive advantages in highly competitive industries such as the automobile industry (Bhuiyan & Baghel 2005; Li et al. 2009; Schaeffer, Cadavid, & Backström 2010). These studies suggest that manufacturing firms use CI to eliminate waste in all organisational systems and processes (Bhuiyan & Baghel 2005; Li et al. 2009). Currently, manufacturing firms use lean manufacturing, six sigma, lean six sigma, and the Kaizen methods of CI methodologies to reduce wastages, simplify the production line, and improve quality (Swink & Jacobs 2012).

Quality improvement (QI) involves the regular and constant actions that enable measurable improvement in health care. QI results in enhanced health services, organizational efficiency, quality and safe care to patients, and desired health outcomes for individuals and patient populations (U. S. Department of Health and Human Service, 2011). A successful quality improvement program is patient-centered, a collaboration of teams, and uses data in systems. QI helps to develop a culture of excellence in nursing, identify and prioritize areas of improvement, promote communication and collaboration, collect and analyze data, and encourage continuous evaluation of systems and processes (American Academy

Introduction Effectively integrating information technology (IT) into an organization’s business processes is critical if the organization wants to increase productivity and remain profitable. IT includes items such as the systems software, application software, computer hardware, and the networks and databases that help manage the organization’s information. When implementing quality standards and processes that are forever changing in the IT world, organizations must balance these changes while continuing to rapidly implement new systems technologies in order to stay competitive. Quality improvements in IT delivery and service support can be improved by measuring and tracking user satisfaction, integration and flexibility early on in the decision process and reinforcing them throughout the review process. Adhering to quality management best practices means ensuring that quality standards are strictly enforced and entrenched into the organization’s philosophy.
