Economic and demographic changes are concerned with high school dropout and academic achievement, high college incompletion rates and a achievement gaps in the labor market have caused policy makers, educators and employers to seek solutions to the education and training of students that enhance their skills to make them college and career ready. Internships are resurfacing as an educational approach that can possible bridge the gap between education and work when aligned with the values and expectations of the major key players, scholars, employers and educators, with the substantive support of policy makers.

This film depicts a family that is struggling with a family member’s alcoholic dependency. The mother, Alice Green, is a school counselor who has an addiction to alcohol that is causing her to experience problems in her life as a result of her use. Her husband, Michael Green, is an airline pilot that is very protective Alice and often steps in and takes over for Alice, even in her role as a mother. Alice has two children, Jess and Casey, which also bear witness to their mother’s deterioration from alcohol addiction.
“Take This Internship and Shove It” by Anya Kamenetz is about the declining state of jobs for new college graduates or current college students. Anya Kamenetz is attempting to prove that internships, particularly unpaid internships, are part of the problem of new graduates finding employment in their field of study. Kamenetz is also trying to prove internships are harmful to the job market in general. Kamenetz describes internships as “fake jobs” and states internships cause low wages and decline in young workers being part of a union. When an employer can hire someone for free he or she is more likely to do so instead of spending company money on a paid employee. Employers get away with these practices because with an already troubling job market, new graduates worry about finding jobs in their field. Colleges are either requiring students to participate in an internship to graduate or are pushing that internships are the gateway to careers. Kamenetz points out that two-thirds of college students are receiving loans to help pay for their education and it is harmful to the individual to work for free when that time is essential to make money to pay for living and school expenses.

The problem with this is that students don’t know that this is the problem and most students don’t know where to go to sign up for an internship or an extracurricular activity that’s going to teach them these skills. According to a survey that I hosted 74.28% of students at Arroyo High School feel that our community is lacking offers in extra-curricular activities and internships. A way to fix this problem to implement a segment in our classes that informs students about all the information they need be a part of a successful internship/extra-curricular activity.

Business internships are helping students gain real world experience while they are not actually out in the real world yet. Internships are becoming more and more popular with college students in today’s world. An internship is basically when a student in college goes to a company or business and works while they are still enrolled in school and still getting academic credit. The main purpose of the internship is for the student to gain valuable on the job work experience. But there are also other things that a student can get from internships. Internships help the student decide whether or not this line of work is correct for them. Since the student works in an occupation in which they are highly interested in it really helps them get a bigger picture of the outside world.
In 2012, eighty-four percent of Santa Clara University graduates who responded to a survey from the Santa Clara University School of Engineering obtained one or more internships during their undergraduate studies. Of those who responded, eighty-two percent were employed full-time after graduation earning a median salary of $62,500 (Santa Clara University). This research exhibits that internships can be an important strategy in the efforts toward job search for both students, as well as for employers looking to hire valuable employees. As defined by InternNE.com, an internship is any carefully monitored service or work experience that may be evaluated for educational credit in which an intern or student establishes learning goals and reflects on his or her learning experience in relation to achievement of the stated goals. Internships should first be examined that, when implemented at fullest potential, these opportunities can provide companies and students with a competitive edge in today’s business world. Subsequently, it can be shown that internships assist organizations and companies with temporary or seasonal project and task completion. Lastly, internships will be clarified as to how they allow students to gain valuable experience before entering the workforce. From reviewing an ample amount of research, internships are beneficial and advantageous to the success of a young student, as well as companies.
An internship is a formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession. By this point in my internship I am more than half way through it and taking on more and more responsibilities and positions as I go along.
In particular, it was helpful to here from individuals on the panel that were graduates from our program. Elizabeth Cowart, a LPC at Transitions of Augusta, informed my classmates and I about about her personal internship experiences. She noted four key things (1) the importance of getting as much hands-on experience as possible (2) taking a mental note of the what you like and dislike at each internship site (3) using weekly supervision hours to discuss your areas of strengths and weaknesses and (4) remembering to always maintain a professional image. In today’s society, there is constant competition for jobs because of the developing global economy in the country. Companies and business owners search for those well qualified and whom they feel will make them the most successful. One way for college students to stand out to employers is through unpaid internship programs. Unpaid programs such as these can be successful tools, but recent debate has shown that many believe interns should receive compensation. Internships provide very important and unique opportunities that can pave the way for their success. But should not be paid for their efforts because they are already being “paid” in many other significant ways, compensation should not be the end goal, and they are inexperienced students.
“Internships provide students… with a means of bridging the gap between career expectations developed in the classroom and the reality of employment in the real world.” (Gault et al., 2000, p.8). This means that getting work experience would better prepare students for their actual jobs. They would have already experienced what the workplace is like and would be able to adjust to the working environment more quickly due to the skills they gained. Gault et al.’s (2000, p.5) research shows that interns had a “higher level of career preparation” in 5 of 13 skill areas evaluated. This implies that those with work experience are better prepared for their careers as they have a higher level of skill compared to those without work experience. This would make them more employable, which is beneficial especially if the industry is highly competitive. However, Gault et al.’s (2000, p.5) research is based on a survey conducted on 144 people. Internships are opportunities that many students take before or after graduating from college. Whether paid or unpaid, they are beneficial to students. Some people may not accept unpaid internships because they think that unpaid internships are unfair. However, they forget one fact: internships are processes which can help them to get good jobs later.
