In the start of the trimester my inspiration for reading was low, I felt unmotivated to read in light of the fact that I had not read for quite a while since school had finished for summer break.This is shown in my logs on September 16,2016. I read the book "Pushing The Limits"By Katie McGarry for 19 minutes. I read a sum of 18 pages meaning I read about a page for every minute.In the begining of the school year I read alot of practical fiction books since I feel that when a novel emits the feeling that you are in the book or encountering similar things that the characters encountered the book is all the more intriguing on the grounds that you start to get so inspired by the book that you ponder into the universe of the book creating my experiene to wind up fun. I generally pick my books by discovering books that identify with the past books that I have enjoyed.I incline toward books that come in arrangement since it is simpler for me to stay with one writer that I like than to move onto others and have the possibility of disliking that specific book or …show more content…

This is actually how it felt when I would stay up until 12 am on school nights reading Captain Underpants or making it impossible to sleep by reading multiple volumes of Goosebumps. I used to completely pass my time reading little simple books like these and in return they would fill my mind with vast opportunities to allow my imagination to flourish and apply it in class. The author, Sherman Alexie, is extremely effective through his use of ethos and ethical appeals. By sharing his own story of a sad, poor, indian boy, simply turning into something great. He establishes his authority and character to the audiences someone the reader can trust. “A little indian boy teaches himself to read at an early age and advances quickly…If he’d been anything but an Indian boy living in the reservations, he might have been called a prodigy.” Alexie mentions these two different ideas to show that he did have struggles and also to give the audience a chance to connect with his struggles and hopefully follow the same journey in becoming something great. By the end of the book, Arnold experiences a lot of deaths of people who mean a lot to him but he still found hope. Arnold becomes a warrior for leaving the reservation and going to Reardan. Although there is hardly any hope on the reservation, Arnold knows that there is hope outside of the reservation. The reservation has a horrible education and on page 3 when Arnold was at school Arnold says, “My school and tribe are so poor that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from.”
He puts it likes this “ Back on the [reservation], I was a decent player, I guess. A rebounder and a guy who could run up and down the floor without tripping.” (Alexie__)He continues to tell the reader how he lacked confidence playing basketball at the reservation, and was not expected to be good so he wasn’t. When he went to school, it was different “something magical happened to me when I went to Reardan… my coach and the other players wanted me to be good. They needed me to be good. They expected me to be good. And so I became good.” (Alexie__) When Arnold went to Reardan, his perspective on basketball was changed. Through his coach and teammates made him a star by just believing in him. Alexie shows how believing in people can be a significant role in developing people 's individuality and in this case, he shows this trough Arnold and basketball in a very realistic and convincing way. One pivotal scene at the beginning of the novel ends up with Junior throwing his math book at his teacher. How White people assumed they were better than Indians and tried to bully a young boy under the US Reservation. Alexie was bullied by his classmates, teammates, and teachers since he was young because he was an Indian. Even though Alexie didn’t come from a good background, he found the right path and didn’t let his hands down. He had two ways to go to, either become a better, educated and strong person, either be like his brother Steven that was following a bad path, where Alexie chose to become a better and educated person. What’s more, when Arnold’s grandmother’s wake was held, “almost two thousand Indians showed up that they to say good-bye. “I would always love Rowdy. And I would always miss him, too. Just as I would always love and miss my grandmother, and my big sister, and Eugene.” When facing hardships it is important to stay resilient and not let them ruin your connection with others. In the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian the main character Arnold Spirit becomes more resilient as the novel progresses as he deals with being poor, racism from his predominantly white school, and dealing with the deaths of many important figures in his life.
Growing up on a reservation where failing was welcomed and even somewhat encouraged, Alexie was pressured to conform to the stereotype and be just another average Indian. Instead, he refused to listen to anyone telling him how to act, and pursued his own interests in reading and writing at a young age. He looks back on his childhood, explaining about himself, “If he'd been anything but an Indian boy living on the reservation, he might have been called a prodigy. But he is an Indian boy living on the reservation and is simply an oddity” (17). Alexie compares the life and treatment of an Indian to life as a more privileged child. During that first year at Reardan High School, Arnold has to find his place at his all-white school, cope with his best friend Rowdy and most of his tribe disowning him, and endure the deaths of his grandmother, his father’s best friend, and his sister. Alexie touches upon issues of identity, otherness, alcoholism, death, and poverty in order to stay true to his characters and the cultures within the story. Through the identification of the role of the self, identity, and social behavior within the book, the reader can understand Arnold’s story to a greater depth.
In Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the main character Arnold, also known as Junior, has many health issues, and notably stands out in the crowd. It does not help that he is a poor Indian boy that lives on a reservation, and that he decides to go to an all-white high school. Many of his experiences at school, and on the Reservation, impact his identity. Experience is the most influential factor in shaping a person’s identity because it helps gain confidence, it teaches new things, and it changes one’s outlook on the world.
Alexie begins the essay by telling the audience some background information about himself and his family. He tells of how they lived on an Indian Reservation and survived on “a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear and government surplus food.” (Page 1, para. 1) Right from the start, Alexie grabs the emotions of his audience. Alexie then goes on to talk of his father and how because of his love for his father, he developed a love for reading. “My father loved books, and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well.” (Page 1, para. 2) He talks of how he taught himself to read and that because of the books he began to thirst for more knowledge. Alexie says that once he learned to read, he began to advance quickly in his schooling. However, because of his thirst for knowledge, he got into much trouble. “A smart Indian was a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike.” (Page 2, para. 6) This statement is one of the most powerful statements in the entire essay. They helped maintain a cheap source of farm labor and sustained the Social Hierarchy. Black codes made it illegal to carry weapons or even vote. They weren’t able to serve in juries, testify in court, marry white citizens and travel without permits. The Ku Klux Klan terrorized African Americans. Even though African Americans were the Ku Klux Klan’s main target they also attacked Jews, Gays, Lesbians, and Catholics. Blacks were separated at schools, theaters, and other public places. The Ku Klux Klan and other terrorists murdered thousands of blacks and some whites to prevent them from voting and participating in public life. My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. We were the planets orbiting around one sun that was the bookshelf. Little did I know that books would be the catalyst to academic success in my early life, and I owe it all to my family. If one were to look at my varied reading habits, they would be struck by the diversity and over all unusualness of my mind’s library. I hardly remember the plot of the first book I read, but it was called Lonesome Dove. It wasn’t the actual first book I read, but I don’t really count the McGregor Readers from kindergarten. I read it in first grade because of my Grandmother’s fascination in the T.V. mini-series that was playing during the time. I wanted to be able to talk to her about it so I went to the public library that weekend and picked up a copy. Well, I actually didn’t pick it up, it was too heavy. It took me over two and a half months to read, but with the help of a dictionary and my grandma, I finally read it from cover to cover. I can’t really say that I understood it, because I don’t recall what it was about. But I do remember that it was quite an ordeal. Since then I have read many books. I enjoy fiction the best, especially those that are based on society, but have a small twist that leads to an interesting story. Some of the stories that I remember best from that early time in my life are Tales from Wayside Elementary School, Hatchet, The Godfather, and The Giver. I think that Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, is the only book that I’ve read more than once. I liked the situation that Brian was put into, lost in the wilderness, with nothing more to fend for himself with than his mind and a trusty hatchet. The adversity he faces and his undying drive are what fascinated me most. Since that time my reading habits have grown into a different style. I have usually only read what was assigned to me during the school year because that was all I had time to do, but I have always strived to put forth extra effort. For example: last year for English 3 AP we had to read an excerpt from Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography. Although that we only had to read a small bit, I checked the entire book from the college library and read it all. Although the way that Franklin rambled on and on about his “Franklin Planner” was somewhat boring, the way he describe his life was pure poetry.
Reading and books became a real struggle for me from elementary all the way to high school because I found it hard to comprehend the books that I was made to read. These books were not interesting to me and I found myself starring at pages for hours at a time and would not know or understand what I read.
