Growing up, children are always told they can be whatever they want to be. Parents encourage their kids to be astronauts, musicians, politicians, and whatever else they can dream up. At some point in life, this changes. Parents want their children to be accountants instead of artists. Adults are expected to be something that’s profitable, yet this suggests that profit can only be gained monetarily. In “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin’s character Sonny makes a point that doing what you love makes life worth living, even without money. People often discredit artists, despite the fact that they use art for their entertainment and personal gain. Just like a nurse’s passion may be to heal people, a performer’s passion is to perform. By telling a performer that they’re passion is worthless if they don’t make a large amount of money suggests that money is equivalent to happiness, yet this couldn’t be further from the truth. Pursing a passion has benefits that go beyond what money can do. For Sonny, playing music gives him the ability to “… leave the shoreline and strike out for the deep water” (331). For me, performing gives me the ability to be a part of something that can change people while helping me grow. I work at a part-time job that pays me relatively well, and I perform for free; however, I’m much happier dedicating my time to doing something I love for free than working for pay. Money can’t give me what doing what I love does. Sonny’s brother has an experience watching Sonny perform where he finally understands why Sonny needs to do what he wants to do, “… I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we would listen, that he would never be free until we did” (332). This quotation shows how important doing what you love is. If everyone could understand what Sonny’s brother comes to understand, I believe people would encourage others to live their
