I have been keen on chemistry and biology throughout my time at secondary school. I have always been amazed by human anatomy and physiology. I am particularly interested in understanding methods for diagnosing, analysing and treating disease. Ihope to study biomedical sciences because I wish to pursue a degree which will enable me to explore the world of science in much greater depth and widen my understanding of the role of science in the modern world. I feel that a degree in biomedical sciences will broaden my perspectives and enable me to use my scientific skills in full. I enjoy reading widely on a range of scientific subjects, and look forward to the opportunity that a biomedical science degree will give me to pursue these interests further.
Born and raised by parents working in the medical field, I have always had the urge to follow up on on a health related career. Despite never being pressured into choosing scientific subjects as my academic studies, I deeply admired what a long way science has come and longed to give my contribution to this fascinating world. I am presently studying for my A-levels at St.Aloysius Sixth form in Malta, a college for high achievers.
I grew up in a research and development campus where my father is a scientist. Research and curiosity were constantly encouraged and this prompted me to take up medicine as a career, a field that offers tremendous prospects for research and discoveries. Throughout medical school I tried to be involved in research and attempts at trying out new ideas, be it in the lab or working with human subjects. I carried this through my residency and now my fellowship. The idea of studying a topic or issue that has so far not been treaded upon seems to be extremely exciting and challenging.
Growing up in rural Texas, you have to learn to care for the things that are important to you. There really is not much to entertain yourself with so many adolescents become vulnerable to trouble. Luckily for me, I grew up with the responsibilities that came with growing up on a farm. I had things to care for on a daily basis and for the longest time, the things I cared for most were animals. I exhibited livestock in my youth and this is where I spent the majority of my time. I would come home from football or basketball practice and go straight up to the barn to tend to my animals. Along with feeding and cleaning, I would often administer vaccinations and antibiotics when needed. Because of my interest in medicine and science coupled with my love for animals some could say that I was destined to become veterinarian. The major I chose, animal science, even supported that notion. However, it was not until the summer after my freshman year of undergraduate where I realized it was human medicine that my heart was yearning for.
My affinity for biology comes from my childhood days that I spent watching dissection of rats and looking at the cellular structure under microscope. My mother, being a professor of biology regularly used to take me with her to a Biology lab and that is where my journey towards medical career began. Early on in my life, my family went through a long agony of my father's illness and death. This became a solitary stimulus for me to take up this profession and a driving force to strive for excellence. Going through that turmoil of recurrent hospital visits gave me a firsthand experience of an anguishing family.
While many students claim to be engrossed in the medical field, one being myself, ultimately, only a few students take action towards their interest at a young age and go ahead on to pursue the field. Therefore, students who are sincere about their interest have a tendency to portray interest in minor research experiments, being in a medical field regardless of any materialistic reward, and being able to experience the true work of someone of the medical field.
What drives me to pursue a career as a biomedical engineer is not only to help disabled patients, but also my love of the field itself. Biomedical engineering combines two subjects that have left strong impressions on me, biology and physics. Just learning these subjects from classes and textbooks does not suffice to quench my curiosity. I want to learn more through personal experience. At SIMR, I will be able to handle my own research project, and it will really help me gain an even stronger interest, and propel me forward into my career
My desire of studying biomedical sciences stems from my sciences interest, as it demonstrates a world not visible to the naked eye, plays a big role in everyday life. science specifically biology and chemistry are stimulating and challenging subjects , over the years of studying them ,my interest has increased because learning things about how our bodies function and how it relates to god’s creation is particularly interesting for me. I also find it very important because I’m Muslim. The biomedical science degree will open for me the door to learn more about the vast field of biology and its branches to a greater depth. I developed my knowledge in the science field by taking support classes in the lab at school; I was fascinated by how the body can function in different circumstances and the complexity of DNA, different organisms, chemical reactions, and also very importantly the mathematical aspect which gives me the chance to develop and use my logic and it inform me to new ways of looking at given problems.
Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.
I have always been good at biology and mathematics. This is one reason why one of my many goals is to major in biomedical engineering. I am very excited to start studying biomedical sciences, and hope to use my newly learned skills in the medical field. Achieving a college education in such field will pave the road for my future career, by teaching and instilling knowledge that would not have been learned otherwise.
My passion for a career in Clinical laboratory science stems from a key experience with a li-censed Clinical laboratory scientist. On one day in the church , I was in dire need of help finding a job that can help me study medical in the future. For the first time I encountered professional-ism, knowledge, and humanity all at once. And this wasn’t a one-off experience. Each time I re-turned to the church, the exact same thing occurred: The Clinical laboratory scientist never seized to take the opportunity to encourage and help me knows better about the great work of Clinical laboratory scientists. From that moment, I decided to do my master in that field.
I have always been intrigued by the field of science and that is the reason I pursued the field of Biochemistry for my undergraduate studies. How The Human body works and the different determinants that can affect one's health or a community as a whole have always been captivating to me. I wanted to emerge in a profession that is beneficial for me, my community, and the world I live in. I came to realize through various science courses and health care experiences that a career in health care was the best path for me to outreach my community and the world.
It was difficult electing to pursue Biomedical Engineering, however, I was able to identify that completing this major involves a lot of obstacles to overcome, which is what I look forward to most in the future. It came down to my passion for volunteering at hospitals—where I know I want to be after graduation— and my success in certain courses in high school. Throughout my high school academic career, I have excelled at the courses which engineering majors focus on—math, biology, chemistry, physics— and I have realized that my success in these courses is directly related to my interest for them. I am highly interesting in diving right into the depths of these courses and learning as much as possible about them. As with most Engineering disciplines,
I was first exposed to the world of robots and computers when I took a course on Lego Mindstorms. We worked on various projects including a sumo wrestling robot that participated in a tournament in which the objective was to battle other robots and push them out of the ring. It was a very fun experience. I would continue coding the robot after class, sometimes almost missing lunch! We even made it to the finals and scored second place.
In an age when technology is advancing faster, faster I believe that there is no better time for me to utilize my passion for biology. I took a particular interest in biomedical science after learning about the different components biomedical science emcompasses. Cell biology and genetics are especially captivating to me. Studying about how disease affects the body and being able to participate in
My future plans are to become a biomedical scientist. Biomedical scientists serve in all levels of health science research from basic science working with cell cultures to human clinical trials experimenting the most cutting-edge breakthroughs to maximize human quality of life. I am interesting in researching rare diseases. There are many rare diseases that affect small proportions of the population and unfortunately go unnoticed for reason. Unfortunately, usually it is because therapeutic agents for these diseases would have a much smaller market than therapeutics for common diseases. There is an immense need for research attention to ultimately improve clinical outcomes in patients of rare diseases because many are a lifelong chronic prognosis and are genetic and non-modifiable by lifestyle factors and are lacking of often absent of current treatment options. The government helps by socializing the solution by having money set aside by public National Institute of Health (NIH) to research ‘orphan diseases’. An example of one such program from the NIH is Orphan Products Natural History Grants Program.
