This course was intended to help students address the question “what is the purpose of education?” As the course progressed students were asked to consider how this applied to their professional experience. Since everyone brings a variance of skills, experiences, and backgrounds, this objective will obviously look different for each student. This paper will focus on how the purpose of education looks in construction specifically dealing with heavy equipment operations. This paper will address not only the purpose of education but also the nature of learning, models of instruction, as well as the applicability of online learning to this profession. The Purpose of Education Education in general can be characterized as a growth in human knowledge, skills, or attitudes (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2011). Essentially education is the activity that people use to expand upon their own personal knowledge, skills, or attitudes (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2011). Education is more about the system in place to help make the change, or in other words, education is the agent who helps make the change, the teacher or educator (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2011). It is imperative that educators understand the importance they play in the role of education. There are three main things that educators must keep in mind: self-reflection, student characteristics, and nature of the content (CSU-Global, 2013). Although construction is considered to be a field with a wide variety of individuals whom are usually not well-educated and many whom have had trouble with the law, educating these people is still a vital process to the industry and to companies alike. The heavy equipment business is one in which education is ongoing and a necessity to... ... middle of paper ... ...r attitudes. Works Cited Colorado State University-Global Campus. (2013). My employment in construction began when I was seventeen-years old working at a local golf course. I had the opportunity to help rebuild and enhance a Golf Pro Shop to improve the quality of the members’ experience. My work started with the plumbing, and I
In order to build any solid structure, a good foundation is required. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a foundation is “an underlying base or support, especially the whole substructure of a building, a body or ground upon which something is built” (www.m-w.com). Foundations must be durable to support the structure that is built above. For this reason, the Foundations of Adult Education course delves into various philosophical approaches to adult education and learning. Investigation of behavior theories helps the adult education instructor or trainer develop his or her approach to methods of instruction. In this foundational course on adult education, it is important to discuss the definition of what exactly is meant by ‘adult education’ as well as its purpose and how that has changed throughout its history.

The learning process for adults is never ending and can be very challenging. As an adult educator, teaching adult learners you will face many challenges in the learning process. It is our responsibility to keep the learners engaged, and to help them to realize their full learning potential.

Analysis: having been through the adult learning experience I have realised the roll of learner and teacher in this approach. An effective teacher can facilitate the development of independence, self confidence, learning satisfaction and help students (the learner) to critical think. This experience has taught me that there are different styles of learning and teaching that I can adopt in my future.
In 2011 Mike Rowe, from the television show “Dirty Jobs”, testified before congress on the lack of support for trades education and the effects of that lack of support. He gave startling figures about the number of available trade jobs and explained that there are large funded construction jobs unable to start because of a lack of trained workers. Although Mr. Rowe was speaking specifically about trade workers, such as plumbers, electricians, and metal workers the same ideas about training today’s workers can be applied to many areas of the work force. As a society, it is commonly felt that a college degree is necessary to acquire gainful employment. That may be true in some fields, but it shouldn’t be true for all fields. With a change of thinking, the idea that “college is good” could be turned into “education is good”. Learning, whether in a 4 year college, a vocational school or as a trade apprentice, is worthy. Trade and vocational school are not a second class education. Government, industries and parents must learn how to accept and encourage our youth to seek out educational opportunities in areas in which they show interest and, most importantly, ability.
Most individuals are faced with difficult situations that require specific trainings or skills that most people do not have. Orientation of Adult Learning helps equip that individual with the basis of self-awareness and academic concepts to make sure that each individual is able to succeed. There are several academic concepts that were researched and discussed in this five week course.

In addition, Russell also points out how components like experience, national exam, licensure, and specialty certification play a significant role in the civil engineering profession. These four components are the core thing that makes educators and practitioners has a chance for practicing civil engineering at the professional level, and become a professional engineer. By reading his paper (Russell 2013), it gives an idea to readers that to become a professional engineer it’s not an easy task. It requires a lot of work from educators to achieve
