Thinking critically is described as “the most powerful joint instrument for good that our planet has ever known.” (Gabennesch, 2013, p.1) Critical thinking is an aspect of the mind that I don’t necessarily utilize in my day-to-day life effectively, even though it is a part of our natural instincts. Without knowing, as humans, we think critically everyday, but are not fully conscious of it. Metacognition, a form of comprehending critical thoughts, is the ability to analyze objectively and evaluate an issue in order to form a judgment. It is a powerful tool due to the intellectuality and thought process necessary to create an unbiased impression of the topic, while conceptualizing our notions into actions relevant to the situation occurring. …show more content…

The purpose of critical thinking is to take the aspects of irrational control and allow the rational side of our mentality to prevail. At the macro level, a broad perspective of sociology is the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society, therefore comprehending the thoughts of humans and reasoning behind certain decisions that are made. As stated by Gabennesch, “critical thinking is one of the most important resources a society could develop.” (Gabennesch, 2013, p.1) As a society, without critical thinking bad situations can occur due to the deception of good people. The problem derives from the root. The root being people who are naive to the situation, or have the intellectual capacity of someone who cannot respond to certain aspects of a problem. Society can strengthen if humans can adapt to the process of critical thinking and use it to their advantage to make the most appropriate decision or action. If not, the consequences will transpire. As a society, critical thinking is an important part of daily life.
