In this article, Journalist Christopher Tkaczyk takes the reader through five days of working at Publix Super Markets. In his day by day account, his main focus is to find the secret as to why Publix's has the "happiest, most motivated workforce in America". He takes a turn at each department in the super market and will see first-hand how the associates interact with the customers He discusses not only the employee satisfaction but he will show a glimpse in customer satisfaction. He explained that Publix's goal is to have their new associates achieve full-time status. The article touched on the loyalty of its workers and how the “annual turnover rate is a miniscule 5% - which makes a mockery of the retail industry average of 65%”.
I feel
that this source will help greatly when comparing my thoughts on working at Publix Super Markets versus Whole Foods Supermarket. I found the author’s daily account interesting and convincing. While my main focus will be on associate satisfaction and loyalty, the journalist does touch on how a satisfied associate effect satisfied customers. Christopher Tkaczyk was a senior editor at Fortune at the time of publication; while he may not work at Publix, he definitely gained experience during his five days. I feel that his account is not biased and is a good quality of writing that I will need when writing my essay.

The grocery market is highly competitive. Brookshire’s has found that superior customer service is the key to success. Consumers who are familiar with the Brookshire’s personnel know that they will be greeted with a friendly smile and helpful attitude. Employee meetings and up-beat newsletters from the corporate office are excellent ways of reminding the employees of the significance of making customer satisfaction the most important part of their jobs.
From the employees’ perspective; they are managed someone with experience in their same specialty who can effectively understand and review their work. Furthermore, they can move up within organization, which gives a reason for them to be loyal to the job. They also have the opportunity to work with others in their field, which allows for knowledge sharing and learning new skills. For this assignment, I decided to go to a grocery store by my house named Meijer. Meijer is just like any other grocery store, similar to Wal-Mart, yet higher quality products than Wal-Mart.

Although Publix isn’t open 24/7 and does not have self-checkout (which also plays a role in its strategy), it focuses on providing the best customer service and facility presentation. The grocery store chain sets itself apart from the competition by keeping their stores as neat, organized and clean as possible; as well as Publix strives to provide the highest degree of customer service and accommodation as possible. Not only is the staff friendly and knowledgeable, they are encouraged to assist customers to the best of their abilities, they even help with carrying out the groceries to your car and assist in loading.
