In the film the person who was responsible for creating and maintaining a great public school was Michelle Rhee. She believed she could be in charge and change public school to be better. I believe the community is responsible for creating and maintaining a great public school. If everyone in the community including the teachers care about education we would have a lot better public schools. My experience in a public school was good my school was a pretty good public school. I think my public school experience affected me and my life choices in a good way because I feel my teachers cared about their students. My teachers were very helpful and supportive which made me feel happy being in school which led me to continue to be in school.

This film is one that has faults, but is also very credible and a major wake-up call for those currently in power to make a change and help improve the schools of America, securing a better future for all.
Minorities, African American and Latinos, in America are faced with challenges daily in white society. There are many obstacles minorities experience such as: being judged based on race, stereotyped, or worst being discriminated against by peers. Sadly, minorities can’t seem to escape to harsh realities society created. Citizens in the white society categorize humans by their race to socially construct the achievements and legitimate political goals. Minorities struggles with these goals due to the challenges they experience. The location of these challenges can occur in various places including on the job and/or at school. My perception was changed completely after reading this book, I never knew that so many schools were situated in the ghettos and were so badly overcrowded or only had two toilets working for about 1000 students, and no toilet paper. What really upsets me is the fact that within the exact same city limits, there are schools situated in the suburbs which average 20 per classroom and have enough supplies and computers for every child to receive one as their own. Of course the majority of these suburban schools are dominantly white and the urban schools hold the minorities. The dropout rates that are listed in the book are ridiculous. Most of the children drop out in secondary school and never receive a proper education because of the lack of supplies or lack of teachers' interests. The majority of the kids are black or Hispanic in the poor schools and the suburban schools hold the upper-class white children and the occasional Asian or Japanese children who are in the gifted classes. The small population of blacks and Hispanics that go to the schools are placed into the "special" classrooms and their "mental retardations" can be blamed for their placements. The majority of these students are not mental and they belonged in a regular classroom among whites and Asians.
After watching this movie a second time, there were many arguments made by the school board that were used to segregate the children. The younger teacher said there was a safety issue regarding Mexican children crossing railroad tracks on their way to school. Then, the toilets were backed up, and the Mexican children had sanitation issues. Lastly,

As Horace Mann wrote, education is the “great equalizer for all.“ However, the United States Public School system will likely never be able to equally educate its masses of students. Many individuals have been affected negatively by trouble makers in school. Troublemakers have either disrupted classes or bullied other students. Yes, trouble makers may harm one’s learning environment, but should they be kicked out of school? Though many individuals argue that troublemakers will not change and hold the class down, they should not be kicked out because they need help. Most of these kids that are disobedient do not know the distinction between right and wrong. We should not withdraw trouble makers from school, rather, we should help these troublemakers and teach them right from wrong. In the article “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” by Anita Garland, she states that American high schools are disasters because there are troublemakers (694). She asserts that the withdrawal of troublemakers in schools would make the learning environment peaceful for students who want to learn
First, with all the money that is being put into public education, it needs to be distributed evenly. If public schools had similar resources and capabilities, students wouldn’t need to travel far to get a good education and this would solve many problems. An example of this from the film is when a Mother is speaking about her child’s experience at an open discussion. She talks about how her student loves music and music is taught at a one public school and not the other. Money is being distributed unequally and kids are being taken of opportunities that they could have a passion for. Another aspect that I agree with is that for things to change for the better in the future, everyone needs to get involved. Kids in these unfortunate situations can only do so much to speak up for themselves but it will only get them so far. Most of the students aren’t even able to vote yet so it is important the country as a whole is aware of these problems and learn about how to help. The filmmaker follows the four Harlem families, living in the poor neighborhoods of New York City, apply for the lottery which they dream that they can be members of the Harlem Success Academy, a public charter school, founded by Eva Moskowitz, a former New York City Councilwoman (Catsoulis). Current public high school curriculum are simply too easy. Students are able to take too many easy classes that do not challenge them. This is the first point that needs to be focused on when trying to fix this problem. Within this one cause, there are many different solutions. However, I do not have the time here to name them all. I am going to focus on one particular recommendation that I believe would help the most.
In many different states there are struggles and difficulties that the students face in order to get a decent education in grade school. The documentary states the many different changes that were practiced in order to try and make education better still failed due to the lack of resources for the students within districts. Michelle Rhee, who was an American advocate for the Reform of Education addressed these concerns and came up with many ways to try to better the districts in order for students to be successful. Although there were many programs and laws passed in the education system the NCLB( No Child Left Behind), was an act that protected the students to ensure they could understand and perform at basic levels. In many states, this still remains a problem throughout the school system for students, but they are gradually working to solve these problems and better the education for these students. Lastly, there are many states that are following the KIPP charter schools, which were created and organized to ensure that students will have the resources in order to look forward to a better
