I rely on my education and training to educate patients on their current health status and how they can make certain lifestyle modifications to improve their health. The encounters I have had with patients have helped me confirm that this is something I would like to pursue in the future. My future career goals involve earning a MPH/MD degree in order to continue advocating and educating patients at a more substantial level. More specifically, I would like to pursue primary care medicine in order to promote the community-based medicine model. This change is the result of me writing more scientific based papers. With a scientific paper, the overall categories are present, but how the material is structured in the category is up to the writer. This freedom allowed my writing to develop to the point where I do not any longer stick to the “five paragraph” method. In addition to this, I have refined my word choice to portray a scientific tone and learned how to paraphrase materials and incorporate them without direct quotations. This is evident in my “Review of Article” from PH
The knowledge that I will obtain in the public health portion of the program will allow me to be better prepared to understand the social and environmental determinants of health that contribute to the development of diseases, and this will allow me to care for my patients more effectively. I first considered a public health career when I interned at the Ghana Health Service Family Health Department as an undergraduate student. Participating in national meetings focused on strategies to reduce maternal mortality in Ghana, I recognized that, in order to create sustainable advances, it is crucial to address the underlying social inequalities that exacerbate adverse health outcomes. To advance this goal, I am seeking admission into the Global Health and Population Doctoral Program at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The experiences I had in Kenya reminded me to never take anything for granted. My engagement acting on all these opportunities fueled my perseverance to pursue my career in health
