We have the privilege of living in the United States of America which is one of the most well-educated countries in the world. Unfortunately, we have fallen to 14th place in percentage of 25-35 years old with higher education.
There are far from few pressing and critical issues facing our public education and higher education today. These problems are barriers and challenges that get in the way, and they are crucial elements that need to be addressed in order for us to be able to serve our students more effectively and efficiently. In public schools, these issues can be Funding, Social Media, Technology, Student Learning, High Stack Testing, Politics, School Climates, Family Factors such as Student Health and Poverty.

As a current student in high school, it is very easy to see these issues in the education system. Each day I walk the halls beside exhausted zombies who debate whether they should use their lunch periods to get math help in the library or sacrifice a club so they could read a chapter of anatomy that is not even relative to what they talk about in class. Due to the ever-increasing competition and subsequent elevation in performance standards, kids’ academic and emotional prosperity is only going to get worse. When I am an adult and have children, there is nothing more that I would love to see in their long drives through high school than an improvement in the education system, so that they would not have to struggle through school my peers and I did.
The sad truth is that almost everybody is affected. In the society we live in today, jobs require you to have at least an associate’s degree. Low level paying jobs are even requiring you to have some college experience. College is turning into a “must have” situation for a lot of people. Due to the growth of population and technology, students now have competition around the whole planet. Speaking about global competition, college some European countries is free. It is insane how we call the United States of America “land of opportunity”, but European nations have took initiative to offer free or extremely cheap price for college. This is very unfair to American citizens to pay thousands of dollars for college and European students pay little to nothing. The school systems in United States, however are failing their students. In the world as a whole, the United States is quickly falling behind other countries in important math and reading scores. The United States ranked thirtieth in math on a global scale and twentieth in literacy. This is even more true in more urban, lower socio-economic areas in the United States. These schools have lower test scores and high dropout rates. In Trenton Central High School West, there was an 83% proficiency in literacy and only 49% of the students were proficient in math. Many of these students come from minority backgrounds and are often from low income families. There are many issues surrounding these urban schools. There is a severe lack of proper funding in these districts, and much of the money they do receive is sanctioned for non-crucial things. Schools also need a certain level of individualization with their students, and in many urban classes, this simply does not happen. While there are many factors affecting the low performance of urban schools, the lack of proper funding and distribution of funds, the cultural divide between teachers and students in urban districts, along with the lack of individualization in urban classrooms are crucial reasons to explain the poor performance in these districts. Through a process of teacher lead budget committees and further teacher education, urban schools can be transformed and be better equipped to prepare their students for the global stage.
This nation has always prided itself in seeking knowledge. The truth is that for many, it is difficult to obtain a higher education than that of a high school diploma. However, the issue we face is that we are in a time and age that requires our workforce to have the best possible education to have a fighting chance for a decent job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the premier government source for information on jobs, shows that only 27 percent of jobs in the U.S. economy currently hold a college degree (associate degree or higher). This is a dangerous statistic to be facing when this nation needs to remain competitive in the workforce against competitors in other countries. In 2012, a study was conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in which the United States was rated fourth in the world for being the most educated country; leaving Canada, Israel and Japan in the top consecutive slots and placing our nation with only a slight narrow advantage over New Zealand and South Korea. This seems like good enough of a reason for more people to want to push themselves for a higher education. Public colleges must be affordable to anyone who wishes to attend. If colleges lack to provide this to students, it can affect dropouts, a student’s ability focus, and cause stress. The problem of lack of funding is that colleges have insufficient funds. Therefore, the best possible solution for the problem of lack of funding would be increasing and collecting more funds from state taxes. Collecting funds from the state’s taxes is an effective solution because students get more academic support programs, which decreases dropouts.
Although education can be expensive, an affordable education makes better citizens. In fact, most people believe that going to college improves the chance of finding a great job, but the effect on society is often not considered. Seeking a higher education, often seems too expensive and the paperwork too complex, therefore many people do not consider attending. The ability to gain a degree in any field of study is highly important in American society, possessing skills and knowledge over your job emphasizes the significance of higher education. Especially, for job promotions that would cause someone to make more than their fellow colleagues. In our increasingly competitive economic society, having the minimal of a high school diploma is not enough to provide financial stability nor will it help to compete in a workforce in which the best-educated are the ones that are rewarded the most.
