Psychological development is the development of a person’s emotional, intellectual, cognitive, and social capabilities and functions that they acquire throughout their lifetime. This starts from birth and carries on until death, but how does pregnancy affect the development stage? There are many myths that when women become pregnant their cognitive capabilities begin to decrease and the mother suffers from ‘baby brain’ or ‘placenta brain’. Scientists are interested in this and some wondered what role pregnancy plays in the increase or decrease of a woman’s cognitive function.
An experiment by Christensen et al (2010) they tested cognition speed, immediate recall, working memory, and delay memory in pregnant, non-pregnant women, and during motherhood. The first trimester of pregnancy is the most sensitive trimester for a developing fetus. There are a few different ways that mothers and fetuses can be exposed during this sensitive time. They can be exposed accidentally, knowledgably, or with no knowledge of the pregnancy. An example of an accidental exposure is a radiation accident, like Chernobyl. There was no way to record the actual dosage of radiation that each child received in utero, or the amount of women who had spontaneous abortions after being exposed to the accidental radiation. It has been shown that those babies “exposed during the most sensitive period of pregnancy performed less well [on verbal IQ tests] than those who were exposed after week 16 of pregnancy” (Heiervang 213). There appear to be more significant birth defects and abnormalities in fetuses who were exposed prior to the 16 week gestational mark.
In this essay I intend to discuss two psychological theories of development; The psychodynamic approach and the behavioural approach. In order to do this, I will outline each theory and explain how it accounts for psychological development, health and behaviour of the individual. In addition to this, I will explain how an understanding of these theories relates to care and would help a care professional to support an individual in a care setting.

Erik Erikson developed a theory of development that considers the impact of external factors from infancy to later life. So, when thinking about early childhood education the one detail that comes to mind is development. A fully developed foetus has its full addition of about 100 billion neurons and the first connections between neurons are already formed. After birth the process with the brain quadrupling in volume by adulthood. When the brain is relatively immature it is particularly vulnerable to the adverse environmental impacts on its developing architecture and functions, with resulting impairments with lifelong effects on their physical and mental health. Neuroscience suggests that the contribution a healthy pregnancy makes to brain development is as great as interactions a parent and child have in early childhood.
Rapid growth of the brain and nervous system continues during the early years of a child’s life, however because of birth defects or health problems some children may be at a risk of cognitive delays. Problems such as Autism, where children may have a difficult time with language skills and sensitivity to touch, behavioral problems, or chemical exposures can all affect a child’s cognitive development. For most children though with a proper diet and plenty of stimulation cognitive abilities will develop rapidly, and by about 7 years ones cognitive skills have become “functionally related to the elements of adult intelligence.”
Stress refreshes our brain, specifically it invigorate the production of the brain chemicals and making more connection between the neurons in the brain and there was animals’ studies suggest one of the people’s reaction of stress is that it assists to boost memory and learning scores. Secondly, when a body begin to feel stressful it prepares to protect itself from injury or infection that can occurs by producing extra interleukins and chemicals that helps to regularise the immune system which allows the brain to function effectively, these have been proved recently by an experiment that was done for rats in the laboratory in order to discover what is the influence of the stress, after the process it was found that stress produced a ‘’ massive mobilization’’ of several kinds of immune cells in their bloodstreams. Finally, most of women often worry about their anxiety and tension that it might affect to their unborn baby, but there was a study taken by Johns (Hopkins, 2006) who found that most of stressful women children showed actually during pregnancy greater motor and developmental skills by age 2 than those of unstressed mothers. Another reversible argument presents that unhealthy habits such as smoking can diminish the stress as it has nicotine and good for relax which is true but for the short time. One of the more popular areas of psychology is Educational Psychology. Educational Psychology can be explained several ways. The idea is to study theories and concepts from different parts of psychology and apply them in educational settings. These educational settings may occur in different school settings such as preschool. The goal of educational psychology is to create a positive student-teacher relationship. Educational psychology uses five different types of psychology, behavioral, cognitive, developmental, and social cognitive, and constructivist in this research paper I will be briefly discussing each type of psychology listed above.
