Protein-
There is no set upper limit for protein. One’s protein intake should not exceed more than 35 percent of total food enegery and no less than 10 percent (Whitney, Folfes 182). One of the side effects of protein deficiency is the slowing of the body’s processes to slow down. Protein defficiency can also stop some bodily processes. Protein deficiency can cause slowed growth, impaired brain and kidney functions, poor immune systems, and inadequate nutritent absorption (Whitney, Rolfes 182). Protein deficiency can cause malnutrition, which also effects the intake of other vitamins and minerals. It is also reported that protein deficiency can lead to changes in your skin and hair, loss of muscle mass, and fatigue (Coleman). Protein deficieny can have harmful effects on the body, but consuming too much protein can also cause harm. In our textbook by Whitney and Rolfes it states, “high-protein diets have been implicated in serveral chrionic diseases including heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, and kidney stones.” Protein toxicity can also cause toxins to build up in your blood which can lead to nausea, diarrhea and in some cases, death (Coleman).
Carbohydrates-
The lower limit for carbohyrdate intake is 20 grams or less. This can have serious and dangerous side effects. When you do not consume enough carbohydrates, you could experience irregular bowel movements. Also, your energy is severly decreased which could lead to fatigue, weakness, dizziness and headaches. Limiting your intake of carbohydrates to less than 20 grams a day can also cause Ketosis. Your body experiences ketosis when it no longer has enough glucose for your brain and other muscles to function. This process then breaks down fat, whic...

...les 323).” As a cofactor, Vitamin C refers to help form the fibrous structural protein of connective tissues known as collagen. Collagen assists in the formation of bones and teeth, and helps to heal separated tissues and form scars. Side effects of vitamin C deficiency include bleeding gums, breakage of the capillaries, muscle degeneration, rough skin, softened bones, anemia, and an increase of infections. There are also characteristics of hysteria and depression. In severe cases, sudden death is likely, due to massive internal bleeding (Whitney, Rofles 325). Vitamin C toxicity occurs at 2000 milligrams a day for adults. Side effects of vitamin C include gastrointestinal distress and diarrhea. Vitamin C toxicity can also interfere with medical regimens such as the tests used to detect glucose or ketones in the diagnosis of diabetes (Whitney, Rofles 325).
Vitamin B12 deficiency limits selenium methylation and excretion resulting in higher tissue selenium levels and subsequent toxicity. It occurs in people whose digestive systems do not adequately absorb the vitamin from the foods they eat. Vegetarians who eat eggs and milk products are the most at risk because, on average, they consume less than half the adult vitamin B12 Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) while strict vegans (who don't eat any animal products, including meat, eggs, or milk) are at an even greater risk. Vitamin B12 is important since it works with the vitamin folate to make the body’s genetic material and help keep levels of the amino acid homocysteine in check which helps to decrease heart disease risk. It is also essential in the production of red blood cells which carry oxygen through the blood to the body’s tissues. Life Extension gives offers some of selenium supplements. Babies who are born of parents with low selenium and vitamin B12 rich foods are at risk of anaemia.
Carbohydrates provide energy for the body to function. When these carbohydrates are not eaten the body then burns its stored fat for fuel. As the body's supply of fat diminishes one begins to lose weight. Therefore, the Atkins Diet is successful at making one lose weight in the short term because carbohydrate intake is severely restricted to less than 20 grams per day and will eventually climb to about 40 grams after a few weeks. This "translates to no more than three cups of loosely packed salad or two cups of salad with two-thirds cup of certain cooked vegetables each day" (www.webmd.com). However, the body needs a certain amount of these carbohydrates and after a while of recieving them the body does not function properly. According to Gail Frank, a PhD professor of nutrition at California State University in Long Beach, "The body needs a minimum of carbohydrates for efficient and healthy functioning -- about 150 grams daily" (www.webmd.com). She states that less than 150 grams of carbohydrates disrupts the body's normal metabolic activity. Also, "the brain needs glucose to function efficiently, and it takes a long time to break down fat and protein to get to the brain," (www.webmd.com). Glucose results from carbohydrates or sugar broken down into the bloodstream; but also occurs naturally in fruits and honey. Therefore, the body needs a certain amount of good carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables to stay healthy.
Mr. Smith achieved over 100% of his recommended daily protein. Mr. Smith's health is important for him to keep his protein intake within the recommended range because of the health effects of ingesting too much or too little protein. The effects of too much protein can cause kidney failure.(Too Much, 2006) Too little protein intake can mean low energy, low stamina, poor resistance to infection, mental depression, slow healing of wounds, and prolonged recovery from illness.
A low carb diet is associated with many short term health benefits. Most of the research for this has been done with overweight people as a way to lose weight or for people with diabetes as a treatment method. Low carb diets are good for you in the short term because they reduce cardiovascular risk indicators and do not have any effect on your kidneys.
Vitamin D deficiency is a widespread health problem, affecting up to 1 billion people worldwide.[1] It has gained increasing recognition in the developing world, including Sub- Saharan Africa (SSA) where sunshine prevails all year round.[2–4] Previous studies in SSA have found widely varying prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, affecting 9-49% of the normal population in a region well endowed with round the year sunshine.[5–7] Cultural norms, religious practices, skin pigmentation, malnutrition, diet, co-morbidities like tuberculosis, and drugs may contribute to vitamin D deficiency in this setting.[2, 3]
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
It is day one of your weight lifting program and you are ready to start your body transformation. It is the best workout out there, but with all of this searching for a workout plan, do you have a solid nutrition plan? Nutrition is not only 90% of the battle when it comes to improving all the aspects of health and fitness. It can be the ultimate reason why you may not be seeing any results. Trust me, when I say that iit has taken me years to figure out what foods, how much to eat, and how often to eat. What makes this challenging is everybody is different. What may work for you may not work for me. Some people can get away with eating crap and not gain an ounce but with me if I have a piece of cake, I will gain 5 lbs. I am a creature
About 20% of the human body is made up of protein. Because your body doesn’t store protein, it’s important to get enough from your diet each day.
Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that plays an important role in DNA synthesis and nerve function. It is contained in high amounts in animal derived foods such as milk, eggs, and meat. The vitamin is stored in the liver long-term. Individuals with vegetarian, vegan, or other forms of restricted diet may develop the condition after approximately 6 months as liver stores of vitamin B12 become depleted. Some individuals develop the condition due to autoimmune destruction of cells in the stomach that produce intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is necessary for proper absorption of vitamin B12 in the small intestine.
Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid is needed for growth and maintenance of healthy tissues, especially skin, blood vessels, bones, gums, teeth. Vitamin C aids in resistance against infection and healing of wounds. It also helps the body absorb iron from food. Vitamin C can be found in green vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes and citrus fruits such as oranges and lemon. A lack of vitamin C can cause scurvy, iron deficiency and poor wound healing. A healthy diet should include a high amount of vitamin C because the human body cannot produce its own vitamin C.
You've probably heard about how influential protein is to gaining muscle, but it also gives you
Many women’s and men’s health magazines and products advertise the greatness and effectiveness of low carb diets, when in fact this diet can be dangerous to your health. It is required that the average women intakes 130 grams of carbohydrates each day, and the average male intakes 150 grams of carbs. This diet limits the intake to less than 30 grams per day. (Thrifty Living, 2014) When very little carbohydrates are consumed, the body responds by burning muscle tissue for the glycogen, or stored glucose it contains. The body also reduces the amount of blood sugar and insulin. When the glycogen stores start to run out, the body has nothing left to use as an energy source, thus resorting to burning fat. Though this is what people aim for, it is a very inefficient and unhealthy way to do so; and it complicates the production of blood sugar. The body has no source of glycogen, and therefore creates blood sugar via body fat. This process creates ketones, and puts the body in a state of ketosis. (Reader’s Digest, 2014) Essentially, ketosis is when fat is being used as the body’s main energy source, but has many side effects to it. Bad breath, fatigue, a metallic taste in the mouth, ...
Moderation is vital in all aspects of life and is necessary for overall health, including with one’s food intake. Protein is one of the many important nutrient building blocks that is necessary for proper growth and good health. However, eating excessive amounts of any nutrient or inadequate amounts, can cause various health concerns. Scientists have been able to estimate the amount of nutrients that the body requires. However, the amount of any particular nutrient varies from person to person, depending on your “age, sex, general health status, physical activity level, and use of medications and drugs” (Schiff 2013). It is also important to remember that consuming the required amount of nutrients that meets your dietary guidelines does not
If we continue to eat unhealthy it can cause some huge problems in the future. When eating unhealthy you have less vitamins in your system, which can cause some severe diseases. One is the lack in vitamin C can cause a disease called Scurvy. Early Symptoms of Scurvy are weakness, feeling tired, and sore muscles. Later it causes decrease in red blood cells, gum disease, and bleeding from the skin.
People is always asking: “Why is important to have a balanced diet? Why is necessary to have a balanced diet on a daily basis? And why do professionals tend to recommend a balanced diet?” The human being has essential needs to its existence: breathing, feeding, and keeping the body in constant movement. The majority of the people are aware of this, but they do not have a balance among these things and even more important they do not eat the adequate food to keep their body healthy. Food is one of the most important factors because it gives the energy the body needs daily. In other words, few words food is the fuel that provides glucose, which is carried to each cell of the body through the bloodstream. This process is extremely important and this is influenced by the type of food that each person consumes. A balanced diet is important for human beings, and makes reference to a good nutrition with regard to the food they eat; which contains macro nutrients that are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins; these provide energy and basic materials that the body uses to grow and stay healthy.
