For years, new technologies have been arising and improving drastically. To some generations technology is nothing but foreign to them. Children these days are so familiar with how to use technology; they almost start to learn after they start walking. So many people are abusing technology by overusing it and even some, becoming addicted. If technology is going to be used, it should have a positive purpose behind it. Throughout the past five years technology has become a main focus in the classroom and schools. Teachers are beginning to use computers, iPads etc. to help teach every grade and age. It has become so over welling that it could be believed that with all this technology, there is no point to have a teacher. Teachers and schools have learned to rely on technology as a learning approach.
The past twenty years technology has developed quickly and dramatically. Since using computers has become so familiar to the younger generation’s schools have even put them into classrooms. In the 1980’s schools began to put computers into classrooms and but the 1990’s almost every school in America had computers available for students. The generations before that were taught the way we all imagine a classroom to be, they learned the old fashioned way by chalkboards and writing hand written papers. Since then, learning techniques have changed in a more dramatic way. “Varied digital technologies provide teachers of any content area with a different approach to integrating the skills of the 21st century” (Pilgrim 2). Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.
With the widespread use of digital technology, the classroom teaching approaches and practices went through remarkable changes. When compared to the past ten years, today the classrooms look entirely different in terms of programs and technical tools used to enhance the learning skills of students.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
One of the most utilized instructional strategies is making use of the available technology in the classroom. Today’s fast paced, high tech world has changed nearly everything from communication, commerce, and education. This has created a new type of student referred to as a Digital Age Learner, and the way these students think is different from those familiar with the traditional pathway to education. These new learners have required instructional strategies to change to meet the demands of these students.
To begin with, before anyone can develop an opinion as to whether technology is a useful tool in the classroom, one needs to understand that technology plays an important role in today’s world. However, the use or over-use of technology in educating young children in teaching literacy to young children is a much debated theory. There are many opinions regarding the positive influence technology can have as a useful tool in the classroom, yet there are those, like myself, who also see the negative aspect of too much technology.
It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). It’s amazing how one simple screen can provide everlasting opportunity for learning.
Erin Millar wrote an article called The Pros and Cons of Digital Classrooms. In her article, she states the different opinions of many people on technology in the classroom. This article is shown in Opposing Viewpoints In Context. After evaluating this article, many opinions were made by credible people, but not enough facts were shown to support them. Also, Millar also demonstrated strong emotional appeal in her piece, and lack of definitions for the difficult words she chose to use. The impact from all of this information has resulted in many advantages and disadvantages in how children communicate in the classroom. This article concludes whether or not digital technology can be a beneficial use in school districts as shown by the sources the author used.

Whether technological integration has positive or negative impacts on teaching and learning has been paid increasing attention and a numerous research has done to explore the issue. Regarding the issue, the question of if training teachers in the use of technology in classrooms contributes to students’ outcomes is still an endless argument. This essay will explain two reasons why such training brings about positive academic achievements for learners and a number of training guidelines that can be followed.
As a college student who would like to become a teacher, I believe that technology will help a child. All children learn differently, and technology is to help the children who have no other place to go. Some children are just unable to learn from a teacher, that is when technology plays a big role. Some children have to show themselves how to do things and technology will allow that.
