There are many pros and cons of owning a pet. For example, dogs and cats are both extraordinary pets to own. Especially the ones that are loving and caring to you. You know the saying, ‘‘ A dog is a man’s best friend.’’ Having a pet around is helpful to some people, it can provide them physical support, mental relaxation, and friendship. Have you ever wanted to own a pet and have a friend by your side? My first advantage is friendship. Friendship is the most important value to have with your pet. To connect with a pet and have a relationship with them, you have to get to know the pet and it has to get along with you well. You also need to be calm when first speaking to it. It’s best to have a little bit of experience with a pet. Cats can tend to be more independent. Where dogs tend to want more attention. The first few weeks there might be a little bit of tension. But after a while your pet will probably come around. There is always a chance for bonding between you and your pet.

Pets are especially good for therapy. These pets are the eyes for the blind people, who can’t see. You will see a service therapy dog helping the elder people, blind people, or kids or young adults with a serious enough condition. These pets are especially trained for people who need them the most. An example is a Christian business who has a big group of golden retrievers that comfort and love on the people, who need them the most in their life. Some medical professionals do not believe that mental health patients can benefit from therapy dogs and go as far as saying it is a risk far as to say that it is a to the patient and compromise the patients ability to take care of the dog. When people who suffer with mental health issues qualify to get a therapy dog. The mental health patient is tested to see if they are capable of taking care of the dog. Those in need of assistance should use therapy dogs frequently do to the part of the benefits to using these pets to improve mental and emotional health as and physical health. Therapy dogs are beneficial to people who suffer from mental health issues by providing companionship as well as support. Some people with mental health issues have a hard time trusting others and need someone to talk to; Service dogs are important because to make they people with mental health problems feel better and help people with these disorders deal with their emotions.
Dogs can help children cross the street, lead the blind, alert the deaf, and they do so much more. Many of times, an adult might focus on the problem that doesn’t need requirements. An adult might focus on the problem that a child is socially disabled and by focusing on this problem, they may not even see how this child is trying to cross a busy street or might be trying to talk to someone that they shouldn’t. A service dog prevents the child from going out of sight and many of times can lead a child out of danger or avoid it in the first place.
There are tons of things that can come to mind when one thinks of a dog or a cat. Many people make a choice to become a cat person or a dog lover. There are so many things to think about when choosing a pet. When it comes to owning a pet, most people often think about the amount of space, along with the energy levels the cat or dog might have, most people, also include the amount of attention the animal is going to need, then it comes down to the cost of the pet. Choose the pet carefully.
But like an exception to every stereotype, my experience with a human –animal relationship is also an exception. When I was twelve, I received a pair of kittens as my birthday gift. I was never an animal lover so I wasn’t too excited to receive it. But as the days went by, spending time with them developed a soft corner for them. Unlike dogs, with cats it’s more of a give and take relationship. You have to spend time with them and show them you care for them to be able to reciprocate the same care and concern for you. The more time I spent with them, the more founder and inseparable I grew of them.

Most people are familiar with service dogs and have seen them in action. Animal-assisted therapy is similar service animals in that an animal-human healing partnership is being created. However, the difference is that therapy pets are typically used to treat a mental disability whereas people with physical disabilities use service dogs to help them in many ways. Therapy animals are used in a wide variety of places, such as, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, therapy sessions, mental healthcare facilities, and even in people’s homes. These amazing animals are used on a wide variety of different disorders, but they are utilized mostly by people suffering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD. For people with these mental health disorders, everything in live can be difficult and challenging, however with the help of animal-assisted therapy, their mood, motivation, and life can dramatically improve. Anyone who hears about these brave, loving animals soon falls in love with them. Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), which can be provided in a group or individual settings, is designed to promote improvement in a human’s physical, social, emotional, or cognitive function. An article by Chitic, Rusu, and Szamoskozi (2012) provides an analysis in order to determine the value of AAT. Both dogs and horses that were trained for AAT were examined and studied to determine their effectiveness in treating patients with psychological disorders. The results showed that both therapy dogs and horses were valuable aids to the therapeutic process. The analysis suggests that proper training and repeated sessions were necessary for proper treatment of patients. In addition, certain disorders may benefit more than others in regards to AAT. For example, a child with ADHD may not benefit from a therapy dog’s presence, for it may worsen the hyperactive symptoms. On the other hand, a patient with depression may benefit greatly from the same animal (Chitic, Rusu, Szamoskozi, 2012). Gone are the days of animals running free outside around the homestead, for now animals are allowed inside and are considered by many to be an integral part of our daily lives! Medical studies have found that animals have a much greater intelligence level than originally thought. Through proper training and experience, animals are not only household pets, but also are becoming an accepted form of medical treatment.
People should be able to have an exotic animal as a pet, for various reasons in life. They can pick their own companion of their liking or interest. Anyone could pick an animal of their interest, rather the animal being their favorite or just a liking in a certain animal. They can pick one that they are comfortable taking care of. People can take in a pet that they are comfortable in taking care of, and one they would be able to afford taking care of.
Remember all those cute animals I showed you at the beginning of this speech? Do you remember feeling adoration for that cute furry friend? You could feel like that all the time with your own pet. In fact, over half of the people in American have at least one pet and are experiencing these benefits even now (Casciotti and Zuckermann). Along with that, pets tend to do some interesting things that are both adorable and entertaining, such as a dog chasing its tail or a cat trying to catch the laser pointer. Most of all, you will now have a new friend that will love you unconditionally and may help give some of the unexpected benefits I shared with you earlier. However, owning a pet is not cheap. It can cost a lot of money to buy the pet and to provide what it needs. At the least, a pet can cost about $500 per year (“The Health Benefits and Risks of Pet Ownership”). Having a pet is a wonderful idea. Pets bring companionship, personality, and gut wrenching humor to households across the world. Having previously owned both a cat and a dog, and currently being without a pet, I began to think about getting a new furry friend. Born a dog lover, and bred into a cat lover, I had the difficult decision of choosing one of the two.

Many older folk choose to get a pet after they retire or lose their spouse so they do not feel lonely. Many young couples choose to get a pet before they opt to have children, and many families add a pet to their home for their children. The question is though, what type of pet to get? Do you get a cat, or a dog? Having a dog as a pet over a cat is much more enjoyable and beneficial to your life, specifically because of their behavior, convenience, and loyalty.

I must admit it is hard to believe that domesticated animals can promote mental and physical health, but many studies have shown that they can. People who own pets have been known to lead longer and happier lives than those without them. As we get older, we become less active. The more inactive we become, the higher our risk of death. We therefore need something in our lives to keep us busy so we don’t die prematurely, and a pet is just the thing to do it. This is probably because of the companionship, exercise, and responsibility that they provide. On the other hand, you must find a pet that is compatible with you or with your life style. Maintaining good mental health is crucial for living a normal life.
