Case Study This paper’s point is to discuss many aspects related to case studies. The idea is to give the reader knowledge on what a case study actually is. Along with this topic, some other aspects to this discussion will pertain to explaining the reason for utilizing case studies, the pros and cons of a case study, and what type of sources should a researcher use when conducting a case study.
Explaining a Case Study Case studies are used as a type of research method when a researcher is studying a certain topic. This topic can potentially include people, places, events, or businesses (Gerring, 2004). A case study can be either qualitative or quantitative (Vannoni, 2014). One advantage is that case studies allow researchers to study different types of opportunities that could not be studies by “experimentation” (Crawford, 2016, p. 74). Not only are case studies used for “unique” type of situations, but they can also be used for “practical” and logical situations as well (Crawford, 2014, p. 74). Next, here are some disadvantages for using a case study approach for research. One disadvantage would be, if a researcher was studying a topic on reactions of people, the researcher would be unable to explain the cause of the reactions (Gerring, 2004). There is no way for a researcher to explain the reason behind behaviors. Secondly, the researcher is unable to explain why individuals have different reactions to the same situations (Gerring, 2004). Another disadvantage would be that a researcher might get overpowered by the amount of data that case studies tend to produce. In other words, researchers need to acquire sources in order to gain knowledge. There are many ways that researchers are able to accumulate data from a variety of sources. A researcher has the ability to look at past case studies performed on the same topic (Zucker, 2009). This may help a researcher narrow down what exactly they are looking to accomplish with their own study. A researcher may also utilize published articles that were based on the same topic or on another aspect of the same topic (Zucker, 2009). The method of providing evidence was reading literature, which was 15 years of age or less. The documents he used for his research were case studies, trails, longitudinal studies, and recapitulation. From studying these documents he separated the data he collected into two different classes. These classes were broken up into institutional settings and community contexts.
What is a case study? A case study is a process or record of research in which detailed consideration is given to the development of a particular person, group, or situation over a period of time. There is many different types of cases; rape, robbery, arson, kidnapping and finally murder. Case studies lead to trials;a formal examination of evidence before a judge, and typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case of criminal or civil proceedings. One famous case study that went to trial was Jodi Arias Trial. Her case was her getting convicted of brutally murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander.
The purpose of this case study is to investigate and bring new insight to situations and behaviors within an organization. Case studies are learning tools which utilize social science research to identify and resolve individual and organizational challenges (K. Mariama-Arthur Esq., 2015).
There are different strategies to be used when doing research. A case study analysis is one strategy. With a case study the research looks at one case for example an organization or policy. The issue is making sure that the case study does not become a longitudinal strategy or cross-sectional one. Longitudinal strategy is when the same sample is used at different points in time. This data may be collected using questionnaires and asking the same questions to the same people but at different points in time to find reasoning. Historical modeling can be done using a longitudinal strategy and secondary data, but time restraints can hinder the results. Before I start making the assignment, I have read the case to get and understanding the big picture or the situation in the case study. After that, I analyse the case first by understanding the content in the case study and think creatively the relation between the case and the topic. Then, I read the case again and actively take notes or underline passages. After that, I discussed with my team to identify the key issues in this case, to know the problem that are related with this case study. After I identify the issues in this case, I and my team member generate possible solutions, think about consequences of various paths of action, and weight the advantages and limitations of solutions.

The study should include the name of the person, although this should be protected to provide anonymity where appropriate, and a brief description of the subject. The setting where the study is to be performed should be included. The aim of the observation must be presented along with a report of the findings. The type of method used will depend upon the subject and the area of interest. Data is gathered on the subject in this case observations were used to provide the data. An interpretation of the study will be made in order to provide a conclusion and recommendations made if applicable. Freud famously used the case studies that he carried out on his patients to develop his Psychoanalytic Theory.
This research falls in the category of qualitative research which the research findings is examined by the qualitative factors. At the final stage, the solutions & recommendations are derived base on the analysis. The research approach adapts the qualitative research methodology in the form of literature review and case study research as the main component of methodology. Findings from both main components are then analysed via qualitative assessment.
However, every case study demands the formulation of clear questions, great mastery of the language, and abundant knowledge of the existing literature on the topic (Scapens, 2004). This poses a threat to some researchers who think the case study method is easier. Nevertheless, this rigorous process is outweighed by the innovative and very practical results obtained through case studies (Rowley, 2002; and Scapens, 2004). Another disadvantage Rowley (2002) explains is the lack of control over the variables in comparison with an experiment. Lastly, Rowley (2002) states that by using the case study approach the researcher’s ability to carry out an investigation of certain phenomena in its context increases; and that this method avoids the need for replication in a laboratory

In conclusion, by evaluating the two methods for data collection, it is evident that experiments are more reliable and accurate to obtain or justify knowledge. Experiments use a form of action whereas case studies don’t. Although case studies are more ecologically valid, maximum control and cause-effect relationship is more significant for accurate and precise knowledge.
