Some schools around the United States require their students to wear uniforms to school. These schools have many different reasons and requirements for the students wearing uniforms. While there are many pros and cons to students wearing uniforms, people have many different opinions on school uniforms. Wearing school uniforms can help to keep students focused, help form unity in the school, and decrease bullying. While there are many pros to school uniforms, there are also a few cons to wearing them. Wearing uniforms can cause students to not be able to show their own sense of style through their clothes. Many kids like to wear flashy or fun clothing items such as bracelets, hats, different colored shirts and all kinds of styles of clothing. …show more content…
When students are wearing the same uniforms, then they won’t be wearing anything flashy or bright to distract them or other students. Wearing things such as hats, bright hair, clothing with gang signs, or anything else out of the ordinary can make students more focused on that instead of their school work, which can sometimes cause problems for students and even teachers trying to teach. Since the kids are wearing the same things and nothing flashy then they can focus more on school work and their teachers. This can also help with the teachers to focus on teaching. If their students are being good and staying focused on the lesson and their schoolwork, then the teacher can get more done during the class …show more content…
The uniforms help to have unity and make the school look like a whole (Procon.org). When schools make their students wear uniforms they are typically the same colors and style. This can also represent school pride. This could also help with the kids cheering on their school teams. Just as sports teams or any team, wearing a uniform can make everyone feel like they are a part of the group, or school, and it creates unity within the school. School uniforms typically look a lot alike in many schools around the United States. The students usually wear khakis and a polo or collared shirt. The uniforms are typically solid color shirts such as red, blue, or black. Guys usually wear pants and the girls can wear pants, a skirt, or longer shorts. Some schools also allow the students to wear the school t-shirts such as spirit shirts, school logo shirts and sports team shirts that are purchased through the school. ... students in various ways, such as to learn how to ‘cooperate’ with their friends and work out the problem.” (Mr. Knight). Uniforms are not just for schools it's also for jobs or teams you play on, so you just have to sit down and think about how school uniforms can change and the rest of your priors for the good or better, uniforms can make your school a safe place, bully and gang violence free zone. Even the statistics show schools that have uniforms have a decrease bullying, gang violence and other crimes. Putnam City Schools should adopt school uniforms next year.
Having some sameness can create a safe environment in schools. Having school uniforms can help decrease in-school violence, theft rates and gang colors. School uniforms can also eliminate distraction that clothes can cause. According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. You need school uniforms to have a safe environment for people to teach and learn.
Kids use clothes to express the way they feel and making them wear a uniform is taking that away. School uniforms have been around for a long time. Most schools try to enforce the need of uniforms thinking it will help keep their students safer and better educated. Students shouldn’t have to wear uniforms for these three main reasons: some kids use clothes to express themselves and the uniform would take that away from them, uniforms cost a lot of money and some parents can’t afford it for their kids, doesn't really help with education.
However, school uniforms have negative effects, too. A huge negative effect of school uniforms is that they infringe on ones’ individuality. High school is a time when students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both stand out and fit in simultaneously. By being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and their outward appearance to manifest their individuality. By not being able to express teenagers act out in other ways.
Mentioned in Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “When children wear their own clothes into school, this then becomes a time for them to judge each other, so it prevents competition and teasing” (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms). When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. Another positive statement on how school uniforms are beneficial comes from, Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “Many educators believe that students who wear school uniforms perform better academically in school, and a study done in 1988 by Notre Dame shows a slight statistical evaluation in student performances among students who wear uniforms” (LoveToKnow). School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. According to Procon.org, “Parents can reduce their financial burden when their children are limited to wearing one outfit everyday” (ProConorg Headlines). You won’t feel the pressure to buy clothes that are in style, or expensive and trendy. Uniforms are easier to maintain. They tend to last longer and can be washed easier than other clothes. Wearing school uniforms create a community of higher educated students and equality to
School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices.
School uniforms should be part of the school system, because statistics have shown that students who wear uniforms are doing better than dress codes. More students also feel a sense of equality among each other, and there are fewer judgments of others. It allows teachers to quickly identify people who do not belong in the building and limits the ways that gangs can identify themselves. School outfits provide students with identity, individual spirit, and pride. Uniforms are increasing throughout different schools.
Uniforms encourage modesty and also reduces the need for discipline from teachers because a student is not following dress code. When uniforms are in place, children come to class looking professional, which can promote a better learning environment. The last, and possibly the most important reason why I believe school uniforms are necessary is for social equality. School uniforms reduce the stress children feel when trying to fit in with their peers. Without them, some children may be alienated because their economic background reflects the clothes they wear.
For instance, when students graduate High School, most of them will work in a job that has uniforms; therefore, they cannot complain that their uniforms are uncomfortable and useless. Meanwhile, proponents say that school uniforms make schools safer for students, diminish economic, social barriers, and encourage children to focus on their studies rather than their clothes.
A major reason that schools should have uniforms is because students will get along better. They wouldn’t compare each other based on whose wearing what. This is opposed to a school with no uniform some students will feel inferior to the one’s wearing brand name clothes. Also uniforms lower the chances of jealousy between the students. The students would feel more unified with each other. Further more school uniforms can alleviate school violence, because it will help kids with less money escape the teasing they would get if the school had no uniforms. Also uniforms will help differentiate students from gan...
Individuality is an important reason why having school uniforms is a disadvantage. According to the ACLU, school uniforms took its toll on children’s creativity, independence, and individual behavior. During school, the only way a child can portray their individualism is through their clothing. Students cannot freely express themselves in any other form without going through school officials first (ACLU).
A uniform is a standard set of clothes that is worn by a group of people. These people may be members of an organization or a group of people having the same ideas. There are thousands of kinds of uniforms in the world worn by people, such as police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, security guards, and even fast-food restaurant workers. School uniforms are a controversial issue in schools today. Many schools have already adopted a policy mandating school uniforms, while many more are still considering the change. School uniforms create an atmosphere of equality in which the students are able to achieve to their best, while attaining the most out of their education. School uniforms should be mandatory to unite the school community as one, to instil discipline among the student body, and to eliminate distractions that will help students focus more, which in turn will help our society.
Students are distracted by the variety of clothing they choose to wear it takes away from them gaining inner knowledge. Students choose to wear fancy, strange, or bright colorful clothes. Students become more interested in paying attention to what other students are wearing and what they have instead of focusing on the subject they are being taught in class. Students should be focusing on gaining new knowledge and skills. Wearing uniforms would teach students how to focus on their personalities, inner beauty, rather than their
Uniforms provide students with school uniqueness. Students will stand out in field trips and other school activities feeling a sense of belonging. A bond will then form and unite more students together.
With uniforms, it may restrict the desire for students to dress themselves to impress or stand out. Wearing something they are comfortable with and what they love may increase their confidence level and not curb their creativity. Sometimes when students had to obey the rules and regulations, they might feel locked up inside as they cannot really express themselves. This case can lead to several discipline cases as a student can act aggressively since they think the need to wear uniforms will cut off their
