Creativity and problem solving: “ the mental and social process used to generate ideas, concepts and associations that lead to the exploitation of new ideas” Creativity in the workplace can be integrating by forcing employees to think in new ways to solve traditional problems. Employees must be encouraged to think for themselves and not “group think” has this promotes better solutions to arise and many solutions as each employee or team member will have the opportunity to formulate a solution.

The interns had to use their individual skills of problem solving as well as programming skills, which allowed them to complete the challenge.
In the film, the team is able to brainstorm solutions to their challenges together which allows for the team to formulate a solution that involves every team member’s input. There are two types of conflict, functional conflict and dysfunctional conflict. Functional conflict is non aggressive and is a positive way to finding new ideas and new solutions to challenges. Dysfunctional conflict is an aggressive form of conflict, which can lead to violence, and lack of productivity. Conflict can be caused by many factors, namely: Change, inclusivity, lack or poor communication, resource allocation, personalities and emotions, values and ethics and inner conflict. Many tools can be used to solve conflict. Negotiation, smoothing, forcing, avoidance or the method of compromise can be used.
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN “THE INTERNSHIP”
The competitors in the film portrayed signs of inner conflict, Graham Hawtrey (Max Mingella) towards the end was jealous of Billy and Nick’s achievements. This caused conflict within his team.
There was also conflict in Billy and Nick’s team at the start of the Internship. Two of the members had an argument due to their differing personalities and emotions, though this matter was solved using the smoothing process, which in turn solved the matter
Some of the conflicts were the times when the kid was throwing rocks at his first whirligig, and when he left his whirligig book on the bus. Each conflict leads to a good ending though. The kid that was throwing rocks at it somehow gained a respect for the whirligig, after his mom told him off. Brent figured that the whirligig had helped him this far and now it was time for the book to help inspire someone else. So the whirligigs turned into a far bigger influence than anyone else could imagine.
As previously mentioned, one conflict includes idealism versus reality. The middle-class in general, and George and Lennie specifically, illustrates the problems they face when dreams of a better life are short-lived due to the reality of circumstances encountered and the Depression. Also, the man versus man conflict is seen on a regular basis throughout the novel. The ranch hands indirectly put pressure on George to shoot Lennie. The ranch hands forced that Candy's dog be shot. Also, the novel sheds light on the inner conflict within certain characters. For example, George struggles with the caring for Lennie, or putting both himself and Lennie at peace for good by killing Lennie. Candy also fears that he, like his dog, will be cast aside whenever he is no longer of use.

Nonetheless, conflict is the misinterpretation of an individual’s words or values (Huan & YAzdanifard, 2012). Conflict can also be due to limited resources in an organization (Riaz & Junaid, 2010). Conflict may as well arise due to poor communication or the use of inappropriate communication channel of transmission of information between the involved parties. Management of conflict has various conflict management styles that include avoidance style, forcing style, passive-aggressive style, accommodating style, collaborating style and compromising style. Workplace conflict comes in two different kinds: task involving conflict, which focuses on the approaches used in resolving the problem and blaming conflict that has the aspects of blame and never brings element of resolving problems between the conflicting parties. In the perception of several individuals, relationship conflict is negative.
As the processes and systems used in business have become more complex, teams, not individuals, have become popular in many organizations. Teams are made up of individuals from an organization brought together to solve a problem, improve a process or implement a new process. “A major advantage that a team has over an individual is its diversity of resources and ideas” (Burns, 1995, p. 52). Simply put, conflict is the disagreement and disharmony that occurs in groups when differences are expressed regarding ideas, methods, and/or members (Engleberg, Wynn, and Schuttler, 2003). Conflict among teams or groups develops in many ways. In developing an effective team, members will generally experience the five stages of evolution: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning. The storming and norming stages deal with the process of conflict (storming) and resolution (norming). During the storming stage, exact conflict has not yet been identified, and therefore chaos, disorganization, and disputes are apparent.

The definition of the term problem solving has been described as the process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues (Oxford Dictionary 2013).

Group decision making has many benefits for the individuals involved and the organization itself. In order for group decision making to be efficient, it is important for a creative environment to exist. “Creativity is the mental and social process used to generate ideas, concepts and associations that lead to the exploration of new ideas (May, 2011, para.3). This allows each employee to explore ideas and feel comfortable to share them without fear of rejection.
Problem-solving approaches presented by Takahashi, Adler et al. and Ruffolo et al. have six similar steps. They all include steps of identifying the problem, analyzing the problem, coming up with some solutions, evaluating the solutions, implementing the solution in action, and evaluating the outcome of the solution. According to McShane and Von Glinow, conflict is “a process in which one party perceives that his or her interests are being opposed or negatively affected by another party” (328). The Conflict Process Model begins with the different sources of conflict; these sources lead one or more parties to perceive that a conflict exists. These perceptions interact with emotions and manifest themselves in the behavior towards other parties. The arrows in the figure illustrate the series of conflict episodes that cycle into conflict escalation (McShane and Von Glinow 331-332).
Critical and creative thinking are fundamental to human intellectual progress and artifacts thereof (Dewey, Elder, Csikszentmihalyi, Rosenman, & Gero, 2012). Critical and creative thinking are considered higher levels of thought because while it is believed that critical thinker primarily uses the left-brain and a creative thinker primarily uses the right-brain, both types of thinkers tend to think outside the box, but in different ways. There is no direct link between critical and creative thinking, but they each have different dimensions of thought that are used. Critical thinking is convergent thinking, creative thinking is divergent thinking.
