On September 26th, 2017 at Hillsborough Middle School a seventh grader could not open his locker. Without asking, a peer of his walked up to his locker and began attempting to open it. On the first day of school, teachers demonstrated how to correctly open lockers to their students. However, many students (including seventh graders) were having difficulty mastering this concept. From experience, students can spend around 10 minutes trying to open their lockers. Not only it could be difficult for regular students, but it is also a challenge for short students that have a top locker. They constantly are strengthening their toes by standing on their tippy toes trying to get a grasp on their top locker. We were about 19 days into the school year,
It started as any ordinary day at Fowler Middle School, kids laughing and learning. But, at 8:51 AM, a classroom of students walked into a horrifying scene. Marilyn Tokzulott’s second-period class found their teacher dead on the floor behind her desk, murdered. Despite the many suspects, one stands out above all. Billy Plummer, the boyfriend of the victim's daughter, committed this murder. It is clear that the murderer was Mr.Plummer because of involvement in previous conflicts with Mrs. Tokzullot, presence at the crime scene and access to the murder weapon.
The fifth-grade teacher's secret was discovered by the boy's mother, who noticed his phone buzzing on a school night at 3:30 a.m. after taking it away from as a punishment. The mother found disturbing messages to her son from the teacher,
It’s important not to overlook the fact that young people’s privacy is equally as important as anyone else’s. The fact that they’re young students increases the need for student privacy, as our minds can be more vulnerable and fragile. Privacy can ensure feelings of safety and comfort. The first and one of the most important reasons locker searches shouldn’t be conducted is because of how it affects student trust. When students are informed their lockers can be searched at any time, it may give them the impression that they’re not trusted and are doing something wrong, even if that student is completely innocent.
The sweat was dripping down my face as I pushed the weights off my chest. Everyone ran towards their bags after a student said there was a gun in school. Twitter was the first source that we checked just to make sure. Boom! The door slammed open as coach Ben yells “Hurry up and get out”. My heart started beating faster and faster. We didn’t know what was going on. As we were running to the gym everyone was panicking and pushing each other. I could feel the burn on my elbow but I didn’t know what it was. When we got to the gym my elbow was covered in blood. We were told to get down and stay quiet. Later on we were told a student brought a gun to school and was planning on committing suicide. That was one of many gun incidents at my high school.
On December 12, 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School was invaded by an unstable, armed man. Earlier that year the principal of the school, Dawn Hochsprung, implemented a new security system that required all visitors to buzzed into the school by visual identification. Many schools have also put in similar security systems to have school doors locked at all times during the school day, helping insure students’ safety. For Sandy Hook this minor security system would not be enough. When the gunman arrived to the school, he shot his way through the front do...
Since the time we are born until the moment we die we are taught to follow a specific routine in our lives without questioning the why or the consequences our actions bring. During that course humans tend to become so familiar with our routines that when an unexplained incident occurs, we panic because it is something we’ve never been exposed to, an example to this are the killings of innocent people whom we care for in environments where security and education are supposed to be the priority. In our eyes campuses are supposed to be protected by those who wear uniforms and are trained professionals that are ready to deal with such situations, so why allow a law that will grant any civilian the right to carry guns on campus,
The school locker is usually the only private space available to a student in the environment of the school. So it focuses many of the main issues involved in privacy of the students. The 4th Amendment of the US Constitution states “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or things to be seized.”
Schools are safe places. However, the American public has become increasingly concerned with crime in schools and the safety of students. In part, this concern has been shaped by the highly publicized acts ...
It is a Friday afternoon in Charlesbay High School. Students are piling into the lunch lines awaiting hot pizza, fresh French fries and ice-cold sodas. As the students discuss what they are going to do after the football game and how their 1st hour test was, a gunshot is heard not far away. The students are ordered to stay low to the ground by school security guards. None of the students know what is happening outside the lunch lines. What is going on is a 17-year old frenetic boy who attends Charlesbay, got upset with a couple students. He was sick of hearing them call him “dumb” or “butterball” and pushing him around the hallways. Robby, we’ll call him, took matters into his own hands and decided to do something about his bullies. The way Robby obtained his gun was by a friend, an older friend. This lethal weapon caused the death of 3 students and 5 injuries. What was just explained seems to be a typical storyline heard on the news daily.
How safe do you feel when you attend school everyday? Many students and faculty don’t really think too much about school being a dangerous place; however, after a couple of school shootings had taken place their minds and thoughts may have changed completely. On April 16, 2007, in the town of Blacksburg Virginia, a college student who attended Virginia Tech, opened gunfire to his fellow classmates. This shooting has been considered to be the biggest massacre in all of American history. There are many things to be discussed in this major tragedy. Some of them include the events leading up to the shooting, the timeline that the shootings occurred, the causes, and the significance in this particular shooting. The Virginia Tech is only one of the several examples of the horrible behavior and violence in our school systems today.
Occasionally, certain instances have occurred in which school administrators or staff members have been allowed or instructed to search through the personal belongings of students, sometimes without the
On December 14, 2012, the second deadliest school shooting in United States occurred, which left parents, legislators , and administrators to debate whether lockdowns are enough to protect students. After this incident, people took a second look at the securities of their school to see if the doors and gates were locked during school hours. The Sandy Hook disaster has exposed multiple lacking in schools all over the nation, but has also raised some awareness in finding strategies to keep kids safe. Therefore, is Joy Christian School (JCS) safe? There are many efficient ways to improve security, although none may ever “perfect”. Putting up gates, and having a clear communication system could be just enough for saving lives in case of an emergency.
Do you remember the last time something was taken from you that was rightfully yours? My answer would be high school when someone snatched my wallet with all my hard earned money in it.
We started to freak out and Luke Worley had to take the lock off and piece by piece deconstruct it and dig the key out. After he put it back together it never quite worked right but it looked fine so we left it. Luke became known as the “Locksmith” after this night. Sophomore year continued with the same antics including some night where the three fucksties would spend the night and drink together, man those were great times.
