"All human beings have three lives: public, private, and secret." -- Gabriel Garcia Marquez "If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold." -- Anonymous Do you remember the last time something was taken from you that was rightfully yours? My answer would be high school when someone snatched my wallet with all my hard earned money in it. Stealing in the United States, depending on the total value of items stole, and the state, is a crime punishable up to life imprisonment. It’s also one of the only things that is agreed upon in any part of the world; stealing is wrong. The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that approximately 412,000 larceny arrests were made in the United States during the year 2012. If stealing is so unethical, why are social media sites allowed to do it? This is a question I’ve heard countless times. When you sign up for a social media account how many times are you prompted to click “I Accept?” Five, maybe? Do you read what you are accepting? Most likely not. According to Professor Marotta-Wurgler from...
Do Major League Baseball teams with higher salaries win more frequently than other teams? Although many people believe that the larger payroll budgets win games, which point does vary, depending on the situation. "performances by individual players vary quite a bit from year to year, preventing owners from guaranteeing success on the field. Team spending is certainly a component in winning, but no team can buy a championship." (Bradbury). For some, it’s hard not to root for the lower paid teams. If the big money teams, like Goliath, are always supposed to win, it’s hard not cheer for David. This paper will discuss the effects of payroll budgets on the percentage of wins for the 30 Major League Baseball teams of 2007.
However, if the current rules remain in place and baseball continues without a salary cap, the only hope a small market team may have is to fend for themselves on the big market with financially superior teams. This becomes an exceedingly harder task when one team can afford the salary of two top players while those contracts are equal to the entire payroll of another team’s entire roster. Therefore, the question remains should baseball implement a salary cap, and if they do, how would it come into play. When asking the question regarding the salary cap, four supporting ideas arise for either the implementation of a salary cap or keeping it nonexistent.
The focus of Lewis is Beane’s extraordinary success. Beane has come up with a terrific and great baseball team. He has gone this far irrespective of the fact that baseball payrolls are lower. Beane took over the management of Oakland Athletics in 1999, according to Lewis. Since then, the record that has been compiled by Athletics is amazing. He uses a few analyses to explain this. Consequently, he claims that in the American League, the Athletics were ranked at position eleven out of fourteen teams in 1999. Amazingly, the team was fifth in performance. In 2000, the Athletics’ payroll ranking was twelve. In terms of wins, the Athletics was s...
Everyone that has been through the American school system within the past 20 years knows exactly who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is, and exactly what he did to help shape the United States to what it is today. In the beginning of the book, Martin Luther King Jr. Apostle of Militant Nonviolence, by James A. Colaiaco, he states that “this book is not a biography of King, [but] a study of King’s contribution to the black freedom struggle through an analysis and assessment of his nonviolent protest campaigns” (2). Colaiaco discusses the successful protests, rallies, and marches that King put together. . Many students generally only learn of Dr. King’s success, and rarely ever of his failures, but Colaiaco shows of the failures of Dr. King once he started moving farther North.

Gang violence is nationally and is one of the most noticeable problems in the prison system today. “Gang affiliated inmates comprise about 18 percent of the 18000 inmate population.” (Seabrook) A increasing numbers of inmates and a great amount of them serving longer sentences for violent crimes advise an outstanding increase in gangs and violence in the prison system in the upcoming future. The growing popularity of information technologies has significantly altered our world, and in particular, the way people interact. Social networking websites are becoming one of the primary forms of communication used by people of all ages and backgrounds. No doubt, we have seen numerous benefits from the impact of social media communication: We can easily meet and stay in touch with people, promote ourselves, and readily find information. However, these changes prompt us to consider how our moral and political values can be threatened. One common fear among users is that their privacy will be violated on the web. In her book, Privacy in Context, Helen Nissenbaum suggests a framework for understanding privacy concerns online. She focuses particularly on monitoring and tracking, and how four “pivotal transformations” caused by technology can endanger the privacy of our personal information. One website that may pose such a threat is Facebook.
Technology has advanced tremendously over the past decade, and appears to be advancing at a rapid pace each and every day. The social media is growing just as rapidly. Social media is an interaction between individuals that want to exchange information, photographs, and ideas in different types of networks. Social media users include people of all ages. These people have various experiences, have different cultures, and have various technical skills. (Brandtzaeg 1008) The social media depend on net-based technologies to generate the network for users to share. Social media includes everything that has to do with the Internet. By using the Internet, users can communicate with people locally and worldwide. People are no longer required to travel across the world to experience another culture. This can be done with social networking. The types of social media today come with many different types of communication such as social blogs, wall-postings, songs, photographs, and podcasts. The communication between users is informational, interactive, and also educational. However, unfortunately, most social networking sites keep track of all the interactions that take place, and this is a concern about Internet privacy for Facebook, Twitter, Google, and other social media users. Not only do they keep track of all interactions by the users, they also own all the content, including pictures that the users upload. The social network keeps this information on the user, even if the user deactivates their account with that particular site. Most users do not have any idea that the operator of the networking service keeps this information, and has access to all pictures and tags. By not having adequate security...
