Well, I have been thinking since I have had this experience and wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. Maybe I could become an orthodontist and ensure to my patients that these problems do not happen. I enjoy helping people that I don’t know and being as precise as I need to be, to be an orthodontist. Though I have never had any experience at all with any of this, that is what school is for. I realize that being an orthodontist is the best career choice for me.

Over ten years ago, I met two patients who forever changed the way I viewed my role as a practicing dental hygienist. I greeted the first, a 34 year-old male patient, and escorted him to my operatory. He looked different from most patients, as he wore a medical mask covering his mouth. Surprisingly, I noticed he could not speak, communicating only by using a dry eraser board. On his board, he wrote that he only had six months to live and wanted a tooth pulled so he could be out of pain. As he removed the medical mask from his face, I saw a large tumor that displaced several teeth on the inside of his mouth. The tumor was very disfiguring, and he was clearly in pain. I knew I was staring at oral cancer in the face. Ultimately, the dentist came in and the patient received palliative care that day. But, I never saw him again.
To be honest my initial inspiration to take the dental therapy and hygienist course was from my mother, who would say ‘If more people had healthy teeth, more people would smile’.For me this statement was a turning point ,as it lead me to wondering that maybe the lack of clean and healthy teeth , is actually the prime reason to why many of us today do not smile enough , causing less unity between the people in our society. There are specific courses you have to take and then finally try to get into the Dental Hygiene program and from there on out you talk to professors and get help. You have to try and stay on the right page and you have to believe in yourself. It’ll get hard for you and you’re going to want to give up times but you always have to think positive and think about the good outcome that’s going to come out of everything. My biggest motivation is the smile on my parents face when I walk down that aisle on graduation and when I become a Dental Hygienists. I know I can do it and I believe in myself. During my first semester of at Darton State was rough in my opinion. I took a break off, from when I was in high school, before I started college. Maybe I just forgot what is was like to be in school. When I finally went back to school in the spring, I became very stressed. As time went by, I got a hold of my classes.
