During my first semester of at Darton State was rough in my opinion. I took a break off, from when I was in high school, before I started college. Maybe I just forgot what is was like to be in school. When I finally went back to school in the spring, I became very stressed. As time went by, I got a hold of my classes. I learned about almost everything I needed to know and the way it worked. A lot of thanks to the course Dart 1000. It helped with me learning my way around the online portion of college. Then stress began to relieve a bit, but then I got a job. I am an on-the-job training dental assistant. Which I knew would look really good on my resume when I got to be a dental hygienist. Plus, if I want, I can already have a job lined up of
A dental hygienist is a very important role in any dental office. As stated by a dental assistant, “Dental hygienists work closely with the dentist as well as hands on with the patients. They assist dentists with operative procedures such as fillings and extractions, and making molds of patients teeth” (Wilson, Jennifer). A large part of their job is teaching patients proper dental care to ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth. This includes proper brushing and flossing techniques. According to the job out look, a day as a dental hygienist can include taking x-rays, cleaning and scaling teeth, charting treatment plans, putting sealants on teeth, taking impressions of teeth and completing information about the patient’s oral and medical history (Summary). In some states dental hygienist are allowed to give local anesthetic and place and remove sutures (Delivering Local Anesthetic). According to advantages of becoming a dental hygienist, hygienists spend more hands on time with the patients than the dentist does. These are some of the instruments that dental hygienists use on a daily basis: toothbrush, scaler, mirror, ultrasonic scaler, explorer, suction, computer, salvia ejector, rubber cap polisher, dental models, x-ray machine and probe. The dental hygienist uses a toothbrush to remove soft plaque from the teeth. Plaque is a soft coating on the teeth that contain bacteria. The bacteria can cause tooth decay and gum disease. The amount of plaque on the teeth gives the hygienist an idea of how well the daily brushing and flossing of the patient’s teeth are completed on a regular basis. The scaler is used to remove hardened plaque or calculus from the teeth. The mirror is used to look closely at the surfaces of the teeth a...
Dental hygiene is amongst many professions that come with an increased risk of injury. In fact, evidence suggests that the incidence of dental professionals acquiring musculoskeletal disorders is reaching 96%. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), these complications are a result of “repetitive motion or awkward posture for more than 2 hours at a time, unassisted frequent manual handling (eg, scaling an area using the same strokes), and unassisted forced manual handling (eg, heavy calculus removal using hand-activated instruments)”. These complications not only affect the quality of life for the
Dental Hygienist: Have you been flossing? If not, the Dental Hygienist will know. A Dental Hygienist examines and makes sure that you have been flossing, brushing, and much more on your teeth. You really should make sure that you schedule cleanings every couple months or so. Your teeth are a big part of your health, and if you don’t take care of them, you will eventually end up with fake teeth, or the proper name would be Dentures.
I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
Out of all the careers in the world, a dental hygienist probably has one of the most interesting and flexible jobs. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful towards others and usually pays pretty well too. Many people become dental hygienists because of the easy education requirements and high demand for their jobs. These days, dental hygienists are more respected and being hired more rapidly due to the fact that more and more people are keeping and taking better care of their teeth. They also say that at the end of the day they feel accomplished in knowing that they helped improved their patient’s health, even if only in the slightest way (“Interview with a Professional”).
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. The first honest reason I was gravitated to dental hygiene was because of the salary. I didn’t really know what Dental Hygienist actually did until I did some research.
I am currently studying at CFCC to get into the Dental Assisting program. Upon graduating, I would like to acquire a job at an orthodontists office. The employment for this occupation is actually expected to grow much faster than average; between 2008 and 2018, employment is expected to grow 36 percent. The job demand in the Cape Fear area seems to be fairly higher than other areas in North Carolina, and higher than some other states as well.
Being an adult returning to school is not an easy task. Sure I have cruised through my classes thus far, however it has never been simple. I work my butt off every day, putting in
I had no idea what to expect when I first started college. I had always thought about it, but, because I was homeschooled my entire life, I knew nothing about public school life, let alone college life. Everything about college was completely new to me, like having to walk from class to class or making sure that I was on time. There were many aspects of college life that I had to adjust to during this new transition in my life. In the transition from homeschool into college, I encountered many difficulties trying to overcome new challenges inside and outside of the classroom while, at the same time, trying to adjust to an unfamiliar environment.
Overall, I think my first semester went pretty well. I honestly didn’t know what to expect; I had some ideas about how things might be, but they were pretty vague ideas, and I never really expected them to be very close to the truth. I did expect my chemistry class to be pretty easy, and that ended up being true for me. I expected to make friends early on, but that didn’t necessarily pan out like I thought. Also, I was alone in my room more than I had anticipated, because my roommate goes home every weekend. However, I was able to adapt to living in a dorm and going to class every day much more quickly than I thought I would.
The past semester at Hillsborough College has been great! Infact, I finished the semester with straight A’s in my very challenging courses. This semester, I am once again taking especially demanding classes with the exception of a basic English Composition class which will help to lighten the load. Going to community college has proven to be exceptionally beneficial thus far. I find myself living in a sense of calmness and clarity over all, experiencing college in a way that feels more mature than if I were going to a university. While this was not what I expected my first year of college to look like, I am undeniably happy with how it is going so far. By going to community college for this first year, I am able to focus on school without nearly as many distractions as would be present if I was going to a traditional university, allowing me to start my educational journey off on the right foot. With the extra time and limited distractions, I actually began reading books about philosophy, something I never imagined myself doing for leisure.
Leaving home for the first time and going away for school can be very difficult for some people. In many cases for college freshmen this is their first time being away from their home and parents. Many times they get home sick and want to isolate themselves. They have to get into a new routine of going to school, and change can be very difficult. It is definitely hard to get into the swing of college. They have to navigate through classes in a new format while living away from all the comforts of parents. A college student’s life usually consists of attending classes, long hours of studying, working at a job (sometimes), and having a social life. Some students work at a job or study harder than others, but they are all trying to get degrees so maybe one day they will have meaningful and significant lives. It is a constant struggle for everyone who is trying desperately to make him or herself into a success. And every college student wants to be involved with something in order to further their education, or just have fun. There are lots of new opportunities out there. The struggle consists of demands on time, financial pressures, parental pressure and conflicts, interpersonal conflicts, managing freedom, peer and academic pressure and the transitional period to a new academic environment (Stanford University 4). All of these factors combined can cause emotional disturbances and one of the most common is stress.
The only class I had to worry about was economics because that was new to me and getting scared about it because my friends that has taken the class last semester told me how hard it was and that I had to pay attention and not slack off because if I did, I wasn’t going to pass and not be able to exempt. Worst of all not being able to walk the stage with my class because just like government, economics was also a requirement in order to graduate. During the class I never slaked off. I always submitted everything on time, Although I actually didn’t passed all of the test I took in that class , I always made sure to do retakes or do extra credit work . I ended up passing the class and exempting it . Besides all the stress of all the classes during the whole year they were some stuff I was really looking forward to during my senior year like, prom, practicing graduation, senior picnic day and working on my legacy . I had a lot of fun working on my legacy senior legacy that’s mostly what a lot of seniors look forward to, I spent over 150 dollars on things for my legacy, I had one of my friends helping me with it and I had to write about my whole high school experience and on what I wanted to whenever I graduated high school. I like to decorate so it was a really fun experience for
When first coming to school I thought the adjustment from being away from home would be a lot harder but over this semester I learned to
College life isn’t easy, actually it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be. Living on my own, being responsible for my own work and I have all the freedom I could have on a college campus. I realized this within the first few weeks of school at Lander University. My first day was on a Monday. It was seven thirty in the morning and I was already on my way to class because I refused to be late on my first day.
