A dental hygienist and an elementary education teacher have similar characteristics and different characteristics, but I would enjoy both so this will make for a hard decision to choose.
An elementary education teacher and a dental hygienist surprisingly have multiple qualities in common, which is why they are currently my top two choices for my future career. First, both of these jobs can be located in small and large towns. They both are in demand and growing. A dental hygienist and an elementary education teacher both work inside of buildings and interact with lots of people. The two jobs both have varieties and do not require to do the same tasks everyday. The skills and qualities needed for both of these occupations are also very similar.

A dental hygienist cleans and examines patient’s teeth and gums for diseases or abnormalities. An elementary education teacher prepares and educates young students by teaching them basic subjects and skills that they will use for the rest of their school career and more importantly, life. Although both jobs are indoors, a dental hygienist mostly works in a dentist office with a low numbered staff while and elementary education teacher works in a school with a large numbered staff. An elementary education teacher also “serves” to multiple young children while a dental hygienist only has one patient at a time. A teacher’s hours are for a specific amount of time every weekday with summers off. A dental hygienist hours can change, if they want it to, and can be every week day or even a couple days off. A dental hygienist has more flexibility in their schedule. To become a dental hygienist, I would have to have an associate's degree in dental hygiene which will take 2-3 years, and I would need to be state certified. To become an elementary education teacher, I would have to have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and go through observations and student teaching. The average yearly income of an elementary education teacher is $54,000. The average yearly income of a dental hygienist is $74,000 or $35 an hour. Even though that there are mutual benefits in these two careers, there are also some different benefits. Some benefits of being a dental hygienist is that is has strong security. Dental hygienists are in high demand and are always wanted. They have a sense of security that they will not go out of business. Some people tend to believe that a dentist is all about pulling teeth, filling gaps, and drilling holes in a mouth. That may be true, but this is more about the person that treats a patient prior to a dentist drilling into a mouth. Dental Hygienists provide more than just the basic examination. They also give advice on how to properly brush and floss, the types of foods to avoid, and give examples of what teeth could look like if not taken care of correctly. Today was quite a nice experience. There were a lot of volunteers in the office so it's kind of hard to have a lot of one-on-one time with patient. I ended up working closely with the hygienist for most of my time there. She showed me her day to day experiences and some techniques she uses to calm patients. It’s important to experience working with every dental professional. As a future dentist I'll be interacting with the entire dental team including the hygienist, so today I decided to stick with the hygienist.
