One of the biggest decisions in life is what career path you want to take and do for the rest of your life, what interests you, what you excel at, and other benefits that may attract that profession to you. The career and profession I have chosen to write about is Dentistry. Dentistry provides a very family friendly job, with a clean environment, good pay and hours, and the satisfaction of being able to interact with patients and help them in the way that only you can. Some people may wonder, why dentistry? Dentistry is often viewed as maybe boring, or an odd profession to aspire to go into. As I have grown up I have always known that I at least would like to go into the health field, and help people In any way that I can, however …show more content…
As I researched this topic I found that there are many routes to take for this career all of which have a decent success rate and are very viable options for me. I first wanted to know how long school was going to take, according to learnhowtobecome.com: “Complete a Bachelor’s Degree, before reaching dental school, students must complete at least 90 hours of an undergraduate program, though many departments now require a full degree. While students may elect to complete an unrelated curriculum, those who choose pre-dentistry or a science-related major will be ahead of the pack when it comes time to meet prerequisite requirements. Some of the common undergraduate degree paths for aspiring dentists are reviewed in-depth below. Students should be vigilant about their grades and study habits even at this level, as GPAs play a profound role in dental school admissions” (learnhowtobecome.com1). This is only the first step in schooling to become a dentist, and then comes the test to get into dental school. “Get a Good Score on the Dental Acceptance Test by the American Dental Association; the Dental Acceptance Test is a major component of a dental school application. Comprised of 280 questions, this five-hour test is heavily weighted toward questions related to the natural sciences, with reading comprehension and quantitative reasoning also making up a significant portion of the overall score. Scored out of a possible 30 points, the current average score is 19” (learnhowtobecome2). This leads to dental school which can be very competitive, dental school is usually 4 years and most dental schools are located in the Midwest. In my interview I asked Dr. Hammer what his path he took was and he replied, “I started by doing my first year at Ricks College, then went on my LDS mission, after that I did one
We have all had those dentist or orthodontist appointments that were a complete nightmare. Getting poked, jabbed, and pinched in the mouth. Well, I have been thinking since I have had this experience and wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. Maybe I could become an orthodontist and ensure to my patients that these problems do not happen. I enjoy helping people that I don’t know and being as precise as I need to be, to be an orthodontist. Though I have never had any experience at all with any of this, that is what school is for. I realize that being an orthodontist is the best career choice for me.
All the various factors that lead me to dentistry amounted to just a part of my decision to become a dentist, the other half of my decision came from the simple question, “(w)ill this be a satisfying career for me?” A satisfying career, to me, is defined by whether or not I can use my career as a means to assist others and experience a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification in helping others. The notion of a satisfying career was one that came through personal experiences. Being a former Medicaid recipient, I was thankful to those that worked in the public health sector to help those in need, including myself and my family. Through my past experiences, I felt obligated to reciprocate the resources and assistance that I had received. At the end of my career, I hope to reflect back on my career and experience a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for having helped others throughout my career; this is what will amount to successful career, from my point of view.

In 1906 Fones trained Irene Newman the basics, and she was then the first Dental Hygienist in the world. Later, the founding of the first Dental Hygienist training program, many more were founded. I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
As we grow up, we are often asked what we want to be. Many people say careers such as a doctor or an actor. When I grow up, I want to be a dental hygienist. When I tell people this they often think i’m crazy for wanting to “work in someone’s mouth”. Dental hygiene is appealing to me. It is a big part of personal hygiene and keeping yourself healthy. One of the first things a person notices about you is your smile and I want to help people perfect theirs. I know that being a dental hygienist will not be the easiest thing in the world but there are some benefits. You don’t have to work full time if you don’t want to. Also as stated by Jenny Lewellen, “Overtime is not expected” (Lewellen). Hygienists also get a good salary. “The median annual wage for
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. The first honest reason I was gravitated to dental hygiene was because of the salary. I didn’t really know what Dental Hygienist actually did until I did some research.
When envisaging a future career, we generally tend to base our ideas off of the most known careers such as doctors, chefs, police officers and fireman, without the knowledge of the other possible career opportunities. After doing weeks of extensive research, I found a very feasible and riveting future career, a Dental Hygienist. Dental Hygiene is a preventive oral health profession that helps people maintain better dental health for the future. Though this career seems quite easy, it’s a crucial job that adults and children of all ages need.
The total credit hours include The Dental Hygiene Program. After completing the perquisites and the program, I will graduate with an Associate Degree in Applied Science. The next objective will next be to become certified as a dental hygienist. This is completed by taking state and certifying examinations. Training usually includes one to two years, including being on the job experience and informal training. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, skills necessary are interpersonal skills, physical stamina, dexterity, detail oriented and compassion. It is only recommended that a student should at least major in an Associate Degree in Applied Science. A student can also acquire a bachelor’s degree, but it is not necessary for this career. It is recommended to acquire this degree if the student is planning on branching away from dental
Growing up I can’t say I ever knew right off the bat I wanted to work in the dental industry. I wanted to be a soccer player or an artist of some sort. I have a very big extended family with awesome careers. Which kind of got me thinking, what do I really want to do? Two of my uncles and one of my cousins are dentists. So of course they were talking to me a lot suggesting the dental field.
I want to be a dental assistant focusing on orthodontia. Usually when I go to the orthodontist I don't see the doctor first I see the assistant. After the assistant takes off my rubber bands the doctor usually comes over and tells the assistant what to do to my braces. Usually the assistant changes wires, rubber bands, tightens wires, and just about everything else. I choose this career because I want to change people's lives and how they look at themselves when they smile. Teeth are one of the main points of self confidence. Before I can become a dental assistant I have to go to a trade school. Then I can go find an office to work at to start my career.
I believe this career matches me because for one I love being around people and I love helping others when they are in need meaning I can help them with better teeth I can take them out of pain I can give them a better smile then they had before. I also loved the salary they had. I can major in this career and I can help my parents out I can give back to them and thank them for everything they’ve done for me. I also talked to the people at my dentist and they told me about how much they love their job and one of the ladies there actually graduated from TSU and she majored in Dental Hygiene. She told me ...
Working in a dental office can range to be slow, flexible or busy and full of emergencies. In order to "fit" into this type of career you have to have a specific personality. Personality traits that would be suitable for a dentist is someone who is a good communicator, flexible, open minded, determined and focused. However, this might change as the 21st century grows to adapt the technology era. This becomes a debate between technology versus service. The digital revolution is transforming the medical world in multiple ways like x-rays, screenings, instruments and computers. Dental offices are now full of x-rays and computers that benefit the doctor while assisting patients. Now that everything is digital, that means all records too. Depending on the dentist, they might rely more on the computer rather than what the patient has to say; or lack interest in assuring patient comfort. As technology progresses, certain surgeries could be capable with robots or machines doing to the procedure. This will change the perspective of the proper services. That technology will be more efficient and viewed explicitly "perfect" than humans. Technology will shape the definition of service as time goes. To receive an insider point of view of what service looks like I interviewed my dental assisting teacher, Lucretia Bollinger, who worked in a dental office for 13 years then got a job opportunity to teach it.
It is 8:40 p.m. of Tuesday night and I'm leaving the King Fahd General hospital driving home with John Mayer melodies bringing peaceful and relaxing vibes into the car compartments.
