1.0 Overview of the consumer magazine market Over the years, there has been a change in where people obtain their information, news and entertainment. The new technology improvements such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets have changed dramatically the magazine industry. Generally said, consumer magazines must acquire loyal and satisfied customers in order to be successful in the market. Furthermore, the production and success of a magazine highly depends on advertisers and subscriptions. However, the worldwide overview and statistics show that the magazine industry is suffering because consumers are now able to access all the information they need online. “The revolutionary change in the consumer magazine business has been advanced by the now ubiquitous use of mobile devices—smart phones and tablets. It has transformed how people consume media and increasingly how advertisers deliver their messages. It has enabled publishers, helped by offering impulse-driven easy, often free, access to their content and to expand their reach. However, the capacity for instant access of information has clashed mightily with traditional print product circulation sales practices” (Folio mag, 2013). Consequently, “Mintel’s consumer research suggests that one of the key reasons why people who buy digital media now buy less hard copy is that they feel they don’t have enough money for the latter” (Mintel,2013) . Therefore, statistics indicate that the current welfare of the consumer magazine market is at a significant risk. (ABC/Mintel, 2013) The diagram on page two shows a prognosis of how print circulation specifically within the UK will change in the next few years. Due to the decline of magazine purchase, publishers and editors are con... ... middle of paper ... ...ss/consumer-magazine-market-predicted-shed-13b-2017-150014> [Accessed 11.12.2013] 2. Newspapers in Australia have never been sustainable in their own right. Once newspapers were two businesses, the sale of news and the sale of advertising (Simons 2011). However, in the modern media environment classified ads no longer come hot off the press on a Saturday morning combined with the daily news. Classified ads are now online, available anytime, and the companies selling the advertising often have nothing to do with news reporting. Media organisations therefore are suffering from variations of the collapse of the pre Internet business model but, because of its dependence on classifieds, Fairfax has had a faster decline than most other Australian newspapers (Simons 2011). Advertising online is cheap, and in the web-based world Fairfax does not have a monopoly or a premium position to gain from Internet based news delivery. The mistakes made in the transition to a digital business and the failure to diversify brought Fairfax to its knees,
The United States is the biggest economical power in the world today, and consequently has also the strongest and largest media industry. Therefore, it is essential to take a look at the crucial relationship between the media and the popular culture within the social context of the United States for a better understanding of the issue. For a simpler analysis of the subject we shall divide the media industry into three main branches: Entertainment, News and Commercials (which is the essential device for the survival of the industry, and shall be considered in integration with Entertainment). Researches have shown that the most popular reason behind TV viewing is relaxation and emptying the mind.

Whether consciously aware of what is being displayed or not, media plays a substantial role in influencing consumption patterns and lifestyle. Researchers noted television's power to influence even people who are illiterate. Smith-Speck and Roy (2008) explained that even individua...
For centuries, newspapers have provided the world with up-to-date, useful information. During the World Wars, America turned to the printed press to receive reports, as the newspapers were a vital source of information for the public; however, over the last sixty years newspapers have evolved from more than just tangible chunks of paper that can be sold on a street corner.
My aims in this dissertation are simple. Primarily I want to answer questions I have asked myself about the current state of the newspaper industry, in past, present and future circumstances. Will there be a job in that industry for me as a designer, or someone else? How are the journalists, the people who work for newspapers being affected? Do they blame the widespread use of the Internet? Extending this I will examine whether the ‘Online Super Highway’ is affecting, causing or perhaps supplementing the newspaper (the complete opposite) whether that is economically, political or sociological. I intend my dissertation not only to be academic, but also to a wider audience. Hopefully journalists, pe...
Print media is on the decline, this can be seen in the U.S.newspaper industry as it is facing “its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression” (Kirchhoff). A few huge newspaper chains declared their bankruptcy, while many others have shut down (Kirchhoff). This has lead to many reporters and editors to be out of the job, lesser pay and even becoming web-only publications (Kirchhoff).
The newspaper industry presaged its decline after the introduction of the television and televised broadcasting in the 1950s and then after the emergence of the internet to the public in the 1990s and the 21st century with its myriad of media choices for people. Since then the readership of printed media has declined whilst digital numbers continue to climb. This is mostly due to television and the internet being able to offer immediate information to viewers and breaking news stories, in a more visually stimulating way with sound, moving images and video. Newspapers are confined to paper and ink and are not considered as ‘alive’ as these other mediums.
The mass media has played a key role in shaping people’s lives. The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
However, Nieman Journalism Lab proves that 96% of newsreading is done in print editions (Journalism.about.com, 2014). According to The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) which was released in 2014, newspaper circulation has increas...
Many newspapers across the country have had yearly decreases in readership and circulation numbers for years. These decreases have added up causing newspaper editors to worry.
New technology has developed rapidly since the birth of the internet, and it continues to expand and evolve affecting many domains, especially the print media. This essay will investigate the influence and impact of current technology of the electronic media and World Wide Web on print media, and how future developments in technology will affect the future direction of the traditional newspaper. The way in which “Bloggers” have influenced traditional journalism will also be explored and how this has affected the journalism profession. In addition, the negative impacts of how the electronic media is being used as a political forum will also be investigated. Finally, the author will predict the consequences of future developments in this rapidly growing industry and the implications this may have on the direction of print media.
