Program Music Do you ever just close your eyes and listen to music? If so, there is a good chance the music will cause you to experience a range of emotions and envision scenes based on what you are hearing. Even when there are no words, you can feel the image of the music. For example, when listening to Spring, from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, you can hear the water flowing and the birds chirping. This is what composers call program music. It is instrumental music that can lead you to visualize non-musical events. There are no lyrics but the picture in your mind is as clear as if someone was verbally describing the scene to you. I believe program music can depict scenes with just the use of instruments. There are four main kinds of program music including the concert overture, incidental music to a play, the program symphony and the symphonic poem. He uses imagery to reflect that the son sees his father as he says, “I have begun to see my father's hands out at the end of my arms.” Imagery is used to express the five senses, and to show what has happened or what the character has experienced. “I hear him singing, softly singing, the words buzzing deep in his chest.” The son is hearing his father sing peacefully as he is dying, this may have been the last thing the son could hear.
what is imagery?, Imagery is the use of vivid description, usually rich in sensory words, to create pictures, or images, to stimulate your memory. These memories can be positive or negative which authors use to connect and engage a reader by describing the five sense’s, hearing, taste, touch, smell and sight. By using imagery a author can draw the reader inside a book making him/her feel connected to the character, place, thing or event and to try and make the reader feel or see what the author wants the reader to see. This is achieved in the novel maestro, written by Goldsworthy. The short novel, is divided into seven sections which talks about Paul Crabbe development as a person and as a musician. Each section also unfolds further information about the life and career of Edward Keller. Edward Keller is a Viennese pianist who teaches Paul which is his student. It is written from a journal sporadically kept by Paul in his youth but edited by him as a disillusioned adult, after Keller's death.
The overture grew out of 17th century baroque dramatic works which began with either a French ouverture, the word from which the term is derived, or an Italian overture (Sadie, 1980). Composers such as Lully, Purcell and Handel used the French overture which is in two sections, each marked with a repeat. The French overture begins with a slow homophonic section frequently using dotted rhythms often ending on a half cadence and then moves to a faster fugal or "quasi-fugal" section which usually makes a return to the slow tempo and rhythms of the first section (Stolba, 1998). The Italian overture, or sinfonia as it was sometimes called, was written in three movements which are fast-slow-fast in order, the finale often written in a dance like character (Peyser, 1986). By the eighteenth century, this type of overture prevailed for operas even in France with the first movement becoming longer and more elaborate. Sonata form was generally used and a slow introduction would often begin the work (Sadie, 1980). Due to the loose terminology of the eighteenth century, symphonies and suites were sometimes called overtures (Peyser, 1986). Imagery is when the author presents a mental image through descriptive words. One prime example of imagery that the author uses is in paragraph 3; where she tells of a moment between a man and a woman. In this narration she states the time, year, outfit of each character described, and what the female character was doing. These details might come across as irrelevant, or unnecessary, but this is Didions way of showing what the blueprint of notebook it. Using imagery reinforces the foundation of the essay, and what the essay’s mission was.
The concert I attended was the Liszt, Prokofiev, and Dvořák concert at the Chicago Symphony Center. Emmanuel Krivine is a French conductor who conducted the orchestra to play Liszt’s compositions Les Préludes, Symphonic Poem No. 3. Next was Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 16 in the Andantino, Scherzo: Vivace, Moderato, Allegro tempestoso, the piano soloist was Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin who was accompanied by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Lastly was Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88 was performed by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the four movements played was, Allegro con Brio, Adagio, Allegretto grazioso, and Allegro MA non troppo.
The Four Seasons composed by Vivaldi was one of the earliest examples of program music and was also the most famous of all his concertos. Vivaldi wanted to depict the various seasons in the four concerti in Italian. When you listen to the Four Season, you feel as though he has created a whole another atmosphere with its own feelings. He seems to have used only the four major instruments that are usually present in an orchestra, which are the violin, viola, cello and bass, to depict this atmosphere effortlessly.
The writer uses imagery, because he wants to let the readers into his mind. By describing the scene for the readers, makes the readers fell like they were there. Therefore, it gives us a better ability to emphasize with him.
I want to discuss the function of music to combine intention and perception. I believe in the prehistoric, people sing or beat on the tough surface because they want to express their emotions, otherwise they have no reason to sing. Similarly, the composers also write the songs to express their feelings. Nevertheless, a piece of music which cannot trigger the change of feeling to audience cannot regarded as a musical sound. According to Thomas Schafer, "When people listen to music they usually try to attain specific goals. Those related to self-awareness and the regulation of mood and arousal are relatively important to them and those related to social relatedness less so"(12). From the research, Schafer get a conclusion that the music which can let people attain goals related to self-awareness and the regulation of mood and arousal will increase the strength of music preference(12). Hence, the function of music is to express the emotion and then influence the audience to let them have the same feeling as composers or performers. Among the many musical types of the period, the classical period is best known for the symphony, a form of a large orchestral ensemble. The symphonic pieces generally had three movements, the sonata, the minuet, and the finale. Building of the achievements of earlier composers, Haydn, and Mozart brought the symphony to it's peak in the last 20 years of the 18th century. Haydn excelled in rhythmic drive and development of theme-based music. Mozart also added to the symphony by contrasting memorable lyric themes in very full sounding orchestral settings.
There is a growing body of work in the philosophy of music and musical aesthetics that has considered the various ways that music can be meaningful: music as representational (that is, musical depictions of persons, places, processes, or events); musical as quasi-linguistic reference (as when a musical figure underscores the presence of a character in a film or opera), and most especially, music as emotionally expressive. Here I will focus on the last topic, for I believe it will be useful for researchers in music perception and cognition to avail themselves of the distinctions that aestheticians have worked out regarding the musical expression of emotion.
In the film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, every time there was a close up of Augustus Gloop in the candy room, sinister music would play. This foreshadowed that something bad was going to happen to him in that room. It puts the viewer on edge and creates a mood of suspense because they don’t know what is going to happen. He also uses music to foreshadow events in the movie Edward Scissorhands. Every time Edward saw Kim happy, angelic music would play which foreshadowed that something would happen between them and also gave you a hint about his feelings towards her. Burton used music to show foreshadowing in the movie Dark Shadows as well. When Josette was walking toward the edge of the cliff suspenseful music played create a mood of suspense and fear that Barnabas wouldn’t make it in time and she would fall to her death. For example, in the movie The Lion king, the song “The Circle of Life”, the instruments used in the song are a piano, vocals, a small woodwind, and percussion. The music starts with very powerful vocals which grab your attention and pull it towards the screen and what is about to happen. The vocals then turn to harmonies from a choir. The music is primarily background offscreen. This means that it consists of sound effects, music, or vocals that originate from the world of the story. For examples, in the movie The Lion King, the animals talk. In real life, animals do not talk. Also in the scene where they sing “Hakuna Matata”, the music in the movie tells what is happening through the lives of the characters, but in the real life all we see is people talking and screaming but not the music expressing our feelings, like The Lion King. Another scene is where the animals sing “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”. The song is telling their love story in through the music but in real life we tell our love story by
Music according to Merriam Webster dictionary can be defined as “the science and art of ordering tones in succession, combination, and in temporal relationships to produce having unity and continuity. The dictionary made me understand that for music to be meaningful, it must have an agreeable sound. Music depicts a lot of information, ideas, knowledge and importantly feelings. People who make or produce music definitely have a way they feel before they begin to sing or before they make a decision to sing. A popular musician, Bob Marley said, “one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” The familiarity of a song can determine the way you feel about the song.
