Every leader starts off with a focus. Whether their ambition is political aspirations or academic, they have ideals that drive their actions forward. With people like Nelson Mandela, Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. it was to put an end to segregation, with Genghis Khan, Adolf Hitler and Alexander the Great it was to conquer as many lands as possible. Having ideals is what creates a leader but it does not always make them a principled leader. In the Harry Potter book series, there are many examples of leaders. Most of them are flawed but out of all of them there is only one that fits the ideal principled leader model, Professor Minerva McGonagall.

Her name is Dolores Umbridge and her goal was to undermine the current staff at the school to gain control. As a teacher, Professor McGonagall could have lost her job if she stepped out of line during Umbridge’s reign. This gives her the difficult choice of choosing between the job she has had for almost four decades or standing up for what is right (Rowling, 2003). In this instance, she shows her integrity by figuring out a way to rebel while still doing everything she can to protect her students. Simply leaving the school would leave her students vulnerable and openly fighting back would get her fired and have the same effect. Instead she was strategic and rebelled behind the scenes. She told the school ghost how to unscrew the chandelier so it would fall (Rowling, 2003). McGonagall also refused to handle situations and would call Umbridge at every turn to handle it so Umbridge was always putting out fires and wearing herself thin (Rowling, 2003). An example of experience traits would be the follower’s upbringing and life experience (Rowe & Guerrero, 2016). If an employee grew up on a farm with chores, responsibility and manual labor, they would have a very different mindset than an employee that did not have to work or were given money by their parents. Teachable qualities on the other hand include reflection, code of morals and communication because these are things that can be altered with the right leadership and guidance (Rowe & Guerrero, 2016). The most efficient consultation method would first be to ask current upper management who they saw had potential in middle management. Then the next step would be to have the applicants fill out a team leadership quiz and leadership ethics questionnaire (Northouse, 2016). This would be useful because they both focus on the requirements of being a principled leader and would give the upper management more of an ideal on the potential of their candidates. The final step would be for the higher employees to mentor the lower employees. They would do this by coaching them how to have integrity, stick to areas they know and be culpable to any mistakes they may make (Rowe & Guerrero,
Managers need to work with subordinates to further improve productivity. To avoid ineffective managers, managerial candidates should be democratically elected by future subordinates. Currently present managers are chosen first by the need for the position, and those that volunteer for the position. Managerial candidates are screened by upper management for time spent in company, work ethic and the necessary drive to lead.
There are various displays of leadership and role modeling in the Shakespearean play 'Romeo and Juliet'. When one hears the term leader, there may be some confusion around what qualities a leader may or may not possess. One should also avoid confusing a good leader with a good role model, because although a good role model may possess similar qualities, there are a few qualities that are required in order to be a strong leader. Two very good examples of the contrasts between a good leader and a good role model are the characters Friar Lawrence and the Prince of Verona, in Romeo and Juliet. The Friar may very well be a good role model, however many would likely hesitate to classify him as a good leader. Just the same, the Prince of Verona would be classified by many as a strong leader.
In the case of Mohandus Gandhi, his personal character allowed him to be a great leader. People wanted to be lead by him even though Gandhi held no real political office. At the beginning of his crusade to free India, he made his intentions completely known to the public. Not all people believed in the non-violence that he preached. Throughout the centuries, this world has maintained various leaders that have ruled far and wide, or a small domain. All of which had various roles, morals, goals, etc.; some infamous, some admired, and some truly despised. There is a vast amount of written works pertaining to become a great leader. Lao-Tzu and Niccoló Machiavelli are prime examples of people who have written works about the topic, yet their views and ideas differ greatly. Yet, despite their opposite views, their intake and thoughts about leadership, both Lao-Tzu and Machiavelli’s indulge logically and carefully on a more personal and human level.
As Warren Bennis, a scholar on the subject of leadership, once said, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” This statement certainly holds true no matter what type of leader you look at. From cruel dictators such as Joseph Stalin, who fought and killed to stay in power, to peaceful leaders like Mohandas Gandhi, who used nonviolent tactics to emancipate India from the United Kingdom, to Jesus Christ, who started a religion and spread his message of love and forgiveness far across the globe, they all had a vision of how they wanted to change the world, for the better, or for the worse.

Warren Bennis’ novel, On Becoming a Leader, is the book I was able to read. Bennis worked years on this novel constructing it off of one of his former creations. Finally, in Cambridge, Ma Bennis published his story by Perseus publishing. Throughout this book he centers around the search to understand exactly how leaders are made. Bennis uses a unique approach to portraying his opinion. This is not an ordinary “how to” book on becoming a leader. Nor is it an autobiography of one’s personal experience. They can’t. A leader needs to always know their destination even if they have to change course a few times. Goals are destinations. Like Marcus Buckingham says, the future in and of itself can be a goal, “whenever a person strives to make others see a better future, there is leadership” (pg 63). Leaders constantly have to be setting goals, whether big or small. Another thing leaders need to have is morals and values. Part of being a leader is leading by example. In order for a leader to be a leader, he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able to affirmatively influence “on others”. A leader needs to “believe” in himself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, to have some relevance to being in existence.

In my view most important character of a good leader is that they must be compassionate. Having a personality of caring about people is important. You can?t be a good leader unless you generally like people. That is how you bring out the best in them. No matter what credential they have and how much experience they have in administration but without being compassionate they can't ever become a responsible and successful leader. For example Hitler is known for his cruelty and he had no feelings for his own race. He failed to understand the feelings of Jews and thus persecuted them. He also failed to know the fact that the strength of his country lies in them, while opposite is Mahatma Gandhi, a major political and spiritual leader of India, followed nonviolent actions, avoiding any bloodshed in the country during their struggle for Independence. Because of his compassionate nature many leaders in today's world has looked him upon. So leader must be compassionate first without being influence by any ulterior motive.
