In today’s society it is not always what you know, but who you know. It is never a bad idea to join a professional organization and or association. The key is to find the right one for you and your needs. According to ask.com, “A professional organization is formed to disseminate information and unite people who share the same occupation or common interests.” Professional Organizations can also be classified as any social arrangement that has the same aims, aspirations, and goals. A professional organization on the other hand, is usually a non-profit group that helps further awareness and goals of a specific profession according to dpi.state.nc.us. Yet not all organizations are non-profit, so be careful when you choose. Professional organizations should also be non-profit seeking to further a particular profession, maintain the interests of individuals engaged in that profession, and have the public interest at heart. It is always a good thing to do research for any group or organization you are about to join. Individuals should make a list of questions before signing on to any professional organization. Questions such as, Will I have to pay for joining the group of for an extended period of time? If so, how much will dues cost? From there you can figure out if the cost outweighs the benefits, or keep in line with the benefits offered by the organization. Many of the organizations have a set of rules and regulations that must be adhered to. A professional organization must act to protect the interests of the public and govern themselves in a professional and ethical manner at all times. They can also in other cases act as labor or trade union and even in some cases be lobbyists. By putting in the extra effort to work with and in an organization, it shows a person’s desire to further ones professional growth. Just remember that joining the right professional organization could ultimately provide success for future endeavors.
