My professional development seminar class has taught me a great deal. It has enhanced my knowledge of the subject a great deal. One of the first things I learned was about professionalism. “Professionalism is defined as workplace behaviors that result in positive business relationships” (Anderson 2). Professionalism is key to any business relationship. It is important to carry yourself in a manner that depicts the business in a great light. I learned that it is all about how a person conducts themselves when in a business setting or situation. Showing professionalism is key at all levels in a business. All of the individuals should show the skill of professionalism to be considered for career advancement, acknowledgement and to express to colleagues that they are supportive and a team-player. Professionalism also goes a very long way in personal career accomplishments, as well as the success of the corporation a person is working for. It will also be considered when management decides to promote employees. I learned that if I show professional behavior to my boss only, my co-workers will start to see that I am not honest, and that I am not able to provide proper relationships to all that I work with. Professionalism to each group shows your pledge to the field and your extraordinary standards at work. If you are rude or inappropriate to others, you may even lose your job. Every person deserves to be treated professionally and with respect. I learned how important it is to know your professionalism is not just shown to others, but through your effort as well. To be successful you have to show a quality work that you take pride in. It can be as simple as accurate grammar and consistency in presentation. You must take pride in everything you do in the work place. I learned to do my best to never blame others. This only fuels a negative situation, which could make for an even worse outcome of events. This as well could result in being terminated. During the course of the class I learned about how important having workplace values are. “Values are things that are important to you as an individual based on your personal experiences and influences” (Anderson 3). A business’s workplace values must be the leading rules that are most important to the way people operate at work. Personnel use these rules to pick between right and wrong behaviors of working, how they treat each other and their customers, and how they make vital decisions. An organization’s workplace values determine the tone for a company’s philosophy and they categorize what your organization cares about. It’s important that the employee’s values match up with these. When this occurs, people understand each other, everybody does the right things for the right causes, and this mutual purpose and understanding aids people in building great working relationships. When work place values are not matching up, employees work for dissimilar goals, with unalike purposes and with different results. This can harm work relationships, job efficiency, job fulfillment, and innovative potential. For example, an employee who operates the cash register is expected to put in the precise amount of money at the end of his shift. If this does not happen it can become a huge problem for the employee, management, and for the business. I believe that showing people you have strong values helps in the gaining and keeping of trust. This is important in creating, developing, and maintaining working relationships. Employees in all trades are expected to act responsible for what they do at work. That includes arriving at work when they are scheduled and being on time. It also includes not abusing the time they are given for breaks. I have seen this a lot in previous jobs I have been given. It is important to accept accountability for when things do not go the way they are planned. It means to be willing to work towards a mutual resolve. Sometimes it could possibly mean working longer hours than previously planned to see that the work gets done correctly. All of these aspects play a huge part in having proper work place values. I believe the most important thing I learned in the class is how to set goals.
There are two different types of goals. The first ones are long-goals. “Long-term goals are goals that take longer than a year to accomplish, with a realistic window of up to 10 years” (Anderson 8). These goals can be buying another food truck or opening up another brick and mortar establishment. The second types are short-term goals. “Short-term goals are goals that can be reached within a year’s time. They are commonly set to help reach long-term goals” (Anderson 8). These types of goals could be anything from making a credit card payment to paying the card off in full within a couple of months. Goals are important in the development of any business. They keep businesses on track and moving forward. Without goals, a business would never survive. I learned that it is important to come up with well thought-out plan of action. It is crucial for me to take the time to gather all of my smaller daily and weekly goals in one place so I can easily check my progress. Goals should be a source of joy in life. They should be one of the main reasons a person gets out of bed in the morning. If a person’s goals don’t excite them, then that person desperately needs to re-think them. I think it is important to not just reserve goals for a career. People should also challenge themselves to set fitness, finance, family, relationship, educational, spiritual, health, and adventure goals. Every area of a person’s life that they value should have a goal to help them improve upon it. Many of the things that happen are outside of a person’s control. For example, someone may have a goal to climb a mountain. The person follows a plan and trained daily. Suddenly, a terrible storm makes the person turn around and retreat. The weather was out of the person’s control. Life just happened and they weren’t able to climb the mountain. That does not mean they will not get another chance to reach
that goal! This class has taught me so much. I just hope to pass on what I learned to another person. I truly believe it can change their perspectives as well.
The professional development interview was very insightful because it provided me with useful knowledge and information for the career path I hope to follow. I conducted my interview with Dr. Julia Felton, who is a child clinical psychologist and a faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition to working as a researcher and Director of the Clinical Psychological Sciences Masters Program, she also works in a private practice, providing clinical care to primarily children and adolescences. Her research focuses on Dr. Felton’s research focuses broadly on gender differences in developmental psychopathology.
A professional leader will not just be professional when their corporate counterparts are around or their superiors are in their institution, but at all times while at work. A good leader shows professionalism by treating all employees the same and not choosing favorites. Professionalism means not changing the rules in the middle of the game to suit the needs of an individual without having good cause, and if having good cause, not sharing that reasoning with those who do not have a need to know it. It is in a moral imagination. One who is unable to have such a moral imagination should be considered a blinded leader, and a blinded leader cannot be a professional leader and can do major damage to an organization without even knowing

Finally, the fifth key is conduct which is “how you deal with others.” (Professionalism Is for Everyone 8) The book that I read described “professionals as mature, polite, loyal, respectful, and demonstrate confidentiality at all times.” (Professionalism Is for Everyone 8) One example of this would be if you are with the patient and your cell phone rings you wouldn’t answer your phone in front of the patient. Another example of this would be if you have a rude patient and the patient is yelling and screaming at you the correct thing to do would be to stay calm and not get an attitude back with the patient. It is important to have good quality and act professional at all times. Being honest, arriving on time, showing up to work every day are some examples that influence your professional image. Overall professionalism is extremely important in every job field.
Professional Development Plan Entering into higher education and professional advancement, I have reflected on my educational background, nursing career opportunities, and future goals. Development of a plan will assist with navigating through a pathway of advanced practice training. According to Johnson (2012), the benefit of a professional development plan and portfolio can help individuals organize, present, and reflect on their personal and professional accomplishments. This presentation and summarization were the first step in mapping out my course to success.
Professional Development Plan Introduction Professionals must coordinate their actions if they want to progress in their careers. A Professional Development Plan (PDP), is an essential tool in organizing individuals’ efforts. The Prosessional Development Plan will provide me with vast opportunities to plan and also define the critical career goals I want to achieve in the mental health profession. The PDP will also clarify the appropriate strategies that will help accomplish my professional goals. Another benefit of a PDP is that it will help me pay keen attention to any flaws that I am experiencing.

Professional development is a lifelong journey. In order for one to examine his/her individual skills, qualities, needs, and opportunities, one must be able to identify future goals. Part of identifying future goals is being able to recognize weaknesses, use of time management, and different ways to invest in oneself to make the most of his/her future. Creating a professional development allows an individual to create an action plan based on his/her values, beliefs, and experiences to advance oneself in a career situation.
This report will explain the importance of being professional in the business world as well as cover the following topics on how to construct a professional image: work attire, wardrobe selection, and business etiquette. Each topic will point out commonly overlooked problems pertaining to projecting a professional image and including recommendations on how to remedy each problem.
To name a few examples of professionalism in the workplace - is being on time, limiting absences, can communicate effectively, dress in suitable clothes, and shows a willingness to work with others. Having a positive attitude in stressful setting is another great example. Professionalism will show in your actions and people around you will notice it. Once people notices your display of professionalism, you will gain respect and trust in your workplace. However, if you dig deeper, all the examples of professionalism mentioned above, it all boils down into one reason- attitude. It is an attitude to show up at work early, and not miss work. It is an attitude that you can communicate effectively. It is an attitude that you can willingly work with others. A person who practices, professionalism in the workplace has the required knowledge to perform duties, knows how to apply the knowledge, and makes ethical decisions in the best interests of clients. Professionalism is a positive way to treat the clients by focusing on their needs. A professional performs work related tasks with care so that mistakes are uncommon. I do not show favoritism, and I maintain confidentiality of my clients’ information. The true professional has a selfless attitude and is always willing to do what it takes to finish my job.
One of the areas I felt I needed the most professional growth in and so the focus of my Professional Development Plan (PDP) is effective classroom management techniques, particularly in the area of behavior management. I feel I struggled in the beginning of my practicum with maintaining student attention and managing behaviors. As an effort to improve I sat down with my Cooperating Teacher (CT) and discussed different techniques and options that could help.
Goal setting is key in motivation; goals need to be clear, sharp, and realistic. To make these feel more achievable it is better to break these down into smaller medium-term goals and medium-term goals into short-term goals so that you have a clear connection between what one does every day and their long-term goals.
Many of us set goals for ourselves. In turn, these goals motivate us to work hard to achieve success. Goals drive an individual's daily motivation. Goals such as getting a Master's degree, having a high-paying job, getting married, purchasing an expensive car, or mortgaging a home drive a person to succeed. When setting a goal, a person must remember that taking small steps to achieve it helps keep up a positive attitude.
Setting goals is the most important thing you can do in your life. Without goal's you are going to have no direction, no ambition to be successful, no drive to stay in school, and trouble finding a career that will provide for you. Without these three things, achieving your goals is going to be one of the toughest tasks in the years to come.
Based on the inquiry of empowering professional development, many findings come into play. At times we feel as though professional development is worthless and a waste of time. Gusky also, addresses that at times why so many professional developments are inadequate. There are reasons why we feel that way and reasons of which we should not have if we were actually getting something out the workshops. A common goal must first be set in the mind of the participants thus leading to the building of professionalism of the school system.
