Creative Thinking and Problem Solving Creative thinking can be defined as unorthodox thinking. It’s a process of discovery that will allow one to gain insight to problems and therefore allows for effective ways of problem solving. For instance: in the movie at 26 minutes a car without a driver goes past which shows the result of creative thinking. It may have been created to limit accidents which therefore solves a problem creatively. An example of this type of thinking can be seen at 22 minutes in, during Billy and Nick’s interview where they are posed with a question of what would they do if they were shrunken down to the size of a nickel and placed in a blender. Their answer of relaxing and their application to reality was unorthodox but …show more content…
Therefore at 1 hour 44 minutes when Billy returns after Nick spoke to him at the old age home, the team then gain a competitive advantage by having him and Nick and their sales skills which not many possess. This then allows them to convince the store owner to advertise with Google which then allows for them to win the challenge and overall competition. This also solves Nick and Billy’s unemployment issue. Obstacles to creative thinking Many believe there is only one correct answer and are therefore too afraid to suggest their answers which limits creativity. However, at 1 hour 21 minutes, Nick suggested a creative solution during a lesson which made others such as Dana see things differently which could make things easier for people. Force Field Analysis This analysis is a tool that helps people and businesses make decisions by looking at the pros and cons and weighing them out to see which has more points. Driving forces which are forces in support of the change are given and restraining forces which are against the change are given. This can therefore be classified as a problem-solving …show more content…
The problem is defined and general questions are asked to gain a better understanding of the problem. More in-depth questions are asked and based on these questions a common ground will be achieved so that a decision can be agreed upon. Experts will then be able to act on their findings which will help deal with risks and opportunities. An advantage of this is that it allows for a number of experts to be called upon which gives a wider range of views and opinions. A disadvantage is that this process is time consuming and requires participant commitment which may be difficult to achieve. Nominal Group This technique is a structured brainstorming method where the problem is defined and each member of the group writes down their ideas in a set time. Members then state their ideas aloud which are discussed and different opinions are gathered about each idea and a conclusion is decided upon based on an idea having the best responses. An advantage would be that a number of ideas are generated so that the best one can be decided upon. A disadvantage would be that it is time consuming as only one problem can be dealt with at a time. In the essay “Thought” by Louis H. Sullivan, he states that people don’t always need words just to communicate. There are several ways that individuals are able to communicate without words, they can express themselves by gestures and facial features, like explaining themselves to others. Sullivan believes that both thinking and creative thinking are better without words and that the minds is always working; therefore, it does not have time to place words together. In order to think clearly they must use other means of pondering; although, the mind works quickly it will take a long time to write what they are thinking because the mind continues without stopping. When individuals are reading they are not think their own thought exactly but what
Creative. Using the creative approach to problem solving, leaders are more apt to explore alternative courses of action through the engagement in the problem itself. Clear paths to a solution do not present in such an approach and leaders experience a change of perspective with regard to solutions. Time is in abundance in this approach which is helpful in deep analysis and
Gardner describes the creative individual as follows: “The creative individual is a person who regularly solves problems, fashions products, or defines new questions in a domain in a way that is initially considered novel but that ultimately becomes accepted in a particular cultural setting” (Gardner, 1993, p. 35). As I understand this, a creative individual is one who seeks out problems and states or solves them in a way that no one else has previously. Such inno...
Creative thinking involves imagining familiar things in a new light, digging below the surface to find previously undetected patterns and finding connections among unrelated patterns (Roger von Oech. Expect the Unexpected).
For example, we must look at the stakeholders that would be affected if Royal Dutch Shell were to expand its operations into the Arctic Ocean. Afterwards, the effects on the different stakeholders must be determined as either beneficial or harmful, if deemed harmful, the extent to which harm would be administered must be detailed, and if deemed beneficial, these benefits must be described in terms of all of the stakeholders involved. Ultimately, the core of every business decision lies in the cost and potential benefit derived from making the decision. We must determine a dollar value of our actions, which could come in the forms of new revenues, compared to the costs, which could form in the form of environmental cleanup or lawsuits. Furthermore, the value of our reputation and public relations must also be
2. Alterative Solutions – Before this class when faced with a problem I would usually go with the first solution that seemed to fix the situation. However, establishing specific evaluation criteria is essential when valuing the merits of a potential solution. If a solution does not fit the criteria, it will not be successful. Judging alternatives through the same criteria allows you to produces the optimal solution and eliminate awful ones. When facing a strategic problem this process will be fundamental in making a
What exactly is creativity? To be creative is to understand and connect the small details of our experiences, both good and bad (creative something). Creativity involves a person using his or her original ideas to create something. Artists such as poets, writers, painters, designers, and more use creativity on a regular basis. They use creativity to come up with new ideas and create original works of art. A poet would use his or her creative abilities to write and produce a poem just like a painter would use creativity to paint a painting.
It enables an organisation to plan future activities by considering a number of questions such as: What are our Strengths? How can we build on them to ensure that we offer a better product than our competitors? What are our Weaknesses? How can we eliminate them? What are our Opportunities?
A sequence of steps must be following in the decision-making process (Dunn, 2010). These include defining the problem, analyzing the problem, developing alternatives, evaluating the alternative and choosing the best, and finally taking action and following up (Dunn, 2010). According to Dunn (2010), the problem cannot be addressed until the true root of the problem has been defined. Once the source has been defined the next step is to gather
Design thinking is a process for practical, creative resolution of problems or issues that looks for an improved future result. It is the essential ability to combine empathy, creativity and rationality to meet user needs and drive business success. Unlike analytical thinking, design thinking is a creative process based around the building up of ideas. There are no judgments early on the design thinking (Simon, 1969, p. 55). Design thinking includes imagination and reason, a combination of convergent and divergent thought, and creativity. Design thinking might be thought of as dialectic, or conversation. It involves design wisdom, judgment, and knowledge. Lastly, design thinking is skill (Hegeman, 2008).
This is one of the types of thinking styles. Creative thinking involves creating something new or original. It involves the skills of flexibility, originality, fluency, elaboration, brainstorming, modification, imagery, associative thinking, attribute listing, metaphorical thinking, and forced relationships. The aim of creative thinking is to stimulate curiosity and promote divergence. When an individual learns to expand their way of thinking to incorporate metaphorical ideas, they will spark the creative thinking process...
Knowledge is generated through critical and creative thinking. Creative thinking is something new or original that is created with value. Critical thinking is a type of thinking that questions assumptions and validates or invalidates a current belief or something that is said to be previously true. Knowledge is created through the culmination of generally accepted assumptions and creativity. How do you separate general assumptions and creativity? These two types of thinking can be easily separated in regards to concrete or realistic ideas compared to abstract or original ideas however to generate new, acceptable knowledge critical and creative thinking must interact together. The questioning of established beliefs with the creation of unorthodox new ideas will expose the most beneficial knowledge for the world.
In groups we often try to brainstorm in order to come up with a solution that best fits the problem at hand. Brainstorming is a way for group members to connect with their creative side so that way the group can have as many options as possible for the solution. When We brainstorm we do not criticize or evaluate different ideas, but encourage them. It is good practice of brainstorming to first generate ideas by yourself, then in a group. Brainstorming happens every day and many of us brainstorm on how we will solve problems in our everyday lives.
Since we are born we have imagination and as we grow up this imagination may increase or decrease. Creativity strongly relies in our imagination. Depending on different circumstances people learn to express their creativity openly while other people close themselves and believe they do not have creativity. Creativity is a natural talent that every single human has. Creativity can be used to solve a complex problem in a different manner or just to find innovative ways to have fun. Creativity is thinking out of the box. Even though creativity cannot be taught from scratch there should be a class that is specific for creativity.
Creativity is a way of bringing new idea into existence or to come out with a product through an imaginative skills or ability. With this, there must be a preexisting idea that will serve as a platform to act. All innovation begins with creative ideas. Creativity is the foundation of innovation.
