Although pro wrestling is viewed as fake, it is actually very real. I believe that pro wrestling is real because of all the injuries the superstars suffer from and the scripted storylines can become very real. Pro wrestling is often viewed as “real” or “fake” which has been debated over the course of time that wrestling has been around. People often debate that wrestling is fake because of the storylines and the acting that is often used to portray the stories of these feuds. Another reason people believe wrestling is fake is the acting that the athletes have to use to portray the feuds they are in. But another reason is the faking of the injuries that have to portray in order to convey the storylines and the matches. The superstars are given scripts to memorize and to portray to get the audience emotionally invested in the matches. I think this helps creates an extra emotional appeal to the storylines. Many people believe that wrestling is fake due to these two reasons alone. People also view wrestling as fake because of the characters that these athletes portray on screen. For example Nikki Bella’s character comes off on screen as snobbish, rude, self-centered …show more content…
One reason it is viewed as real is the real life injuries that the athletes suffer during matches. For example many WWE superstars like Edge, Lita, and Corey Graves have suffered neck injuries which has prevented them from ever wrestling again. Or in other cases the injury just takes the superstar out of action for 6 months to a year like Seth Rollins who tore his knee during a match and ended up out of action for a year or in Nikki Bella’s case where she injured her neck and is still healing from it and facing the possibility of having to retire soon, and because of that injury she has to modify her moves in the ring to prevent her from injuring herself
Vince McMahon’s WWF is a multi-million dollar corporation and has been wildly successful in capturing the sports entertainment market. “Monday Night Raw,” the weekly soap opera on TNN, is one of the three most watched cable shows each week. In addition, the WWF has weekly wrestling shows on UPN and MTV. Personally, I am caught up in the phenomenon. I set aside my Monday evenings to watch Monday Night Football and professional wrestling. I enjoy attempting to figure out the storylines before they unfold and attempt to guess the action that may happen in the next segment.

A long time ago, back in the olden days, Bruno Sammartino was a superhero who sold out Madison Square Garden countless times. Back in those times, wrestling strictly adhered to kayfabe, so many of the fans believed

The NBA can afford to risk alienating a few kids or slow sales of throwback jerseys, because portraying their players as professionals earns $350,000 more corporate dollars from another sold commercial spot. And this is the money that they want (Not Exactly Rocket Science). In conclusion, the players of the NBA have the abilities of a professional, are paid like professionals, and are powerful role models among the youth of society.

The question then arises: What draws us as fans to gather in front of the television every Monday night to watch a group of maniacal brutes wail on one another? What draws us to spend countless hours in line to purchase tickets to a live wrestling event? Everyone has his or her own reasons but more often than not, the reason than I hear most often is that professional wrestling provides a respite from the drudgeries of everyday life. Monday Nitro and Raw is War is the soap operas for those who desire just a bit more action in their story lines. Some view professional wrestling as the apocalyptic adult of good vs. evil, while others immerse themselves in the plot lines. Then, there are yet more fans that enjoy it for the sheer wrestling ability and talent of those in the ring.
Other sports, such as basketball, soccer, and golf, rarely even send the greatest athletes from each country because they would much rather win the NBA finals, the World Cup, or the PGA Tour thanks to the enormous paydays that the athletes can receive from winning such tournaments. The Olympics, however, pays only a fraction of that to their medaling athletes, but wrestlers are not in it for the money. As long as wrestling is involved, an Olympic medal will continue to be the aspirations of wrestlers around the world.
Wrestling is the hardest sport both physically and mentally. The constant management of weight is what kills me the most, I can take all the cheap shots from opponents and the slams down onto the mat but the cutting weight part is the worst. It was the day before a tournament and I was 14 pounds over the weight I was going to wrestle that weekend. I had to lose it, so i did. I ran with layers of clothing on all night long and I didn 't eat or drink anything for two days, I made myself freeze at night so my body would burn more calories to keep me warm, me and friends drilled for hours to help me shed those final pounds. I went through hell and yet not one person tried to stop me or check to see if i was physically okay. They cared about the medal i was going to get that weekend rather than the fact that i was on the verge of dehydration and malnourishment. People should consider the mental and physical health problems wrestling has on a person such as dehydration, excessive weight loss, going days without eating, and the breakage of a person’s will, however all they think about is the titles and the medals they will receive if they can just make that weigh in.
...ost valued skill is the ability to entertain, the world becomes a place where lies become true, where people can believe what they want to believe” (Hedges, 2009: 51). In a world where entertainment is more prominent, people can easily be misled if they simply choose to believe what they see or hear without a shred of doubt. All in all, money can be the motivational benefactor for sustaining pseudo-events through celebrity culture.
The Lighthouse Ministry has a North Central Ohio base and it was started in the 1980s as a ministry that took the church into Cleveland, Ohio ghettos when no one else would dare enter these neighborhoods. When things got difficult Lighthouse stayed there, even times when shots were actually fired around the workers and pastors. Growing up with the office of this ministry in the church that my grandfather pastored was a privilege. The main portion of the Lighthouse Ministry is Heaven Train. “Lighthouse Ministry is on a mission to help the youth of Cleveland, one neighborhood at a time” (About, 2018). The founder battled for years with the Nazarene Church to recognize the Heaven Train as a church because it did not have a building. A description of what volunteers do with Heaven Train is “the morning team will follow the bus to three of the project sites where volunteers entertain and love the 700+ children as they wait to board the bus, hear a bible teaching, and receive a meal” (Heaven Train, 2018).
While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16). One question that viewers ask is, “Is Reality Television really real?” One can think so, but in the long run, it is really not. A great example of this is World Wrestling Entertainment, also known as the WWE.
When a person walks into a building to see a live wrestling event they do not know what to expect. They wonder who will be wrestling. They wonder where their seats are. All of the suspense gets them ready for the show. The suspense gets them pumped and ready to for the show to start.
One of the main reasons for watching reality TV is to provide people with entertainment. To an extent, the majority of society has a desire to explore what goes on in the world around them. People like watching drama that occurs on public television. “Insults, temper tantrums, selfishness, gross behavior, and plain old stupidity- these are the main ingredients for most of today’s reality TV shows. Guess who is watching them? Millions of viewers just like you” (Cohen). “Viewers cannot seem to get enough of the torture, embarrassment, temptation, and above all, drama of other regular, everyday people being placed in unrealistic settings and manipulated for the world to see” (Pontius). These two quotes state that the reason that the majority of our society watches these shows, is that they are entertained by the supposed reality that is portrayed.
There are many theories to why there is so much violence in sports today and one of them is because the athletes today are able to get away with more when they are young. An example would be if a high profile high school athlete who had a scholarship to a big time school were to get in trouble maybe it would be hidden a lot more. Where as if another non-athlete had done the same thing there would be more of a price to pay. So from an early age these athletes learn that they are more important then other students or people. When they get to the college or pro level and someone tells them what to do they don't know how to handle it in the correct manor. Many professional athletes have been looked upon as a problem before they become pro because of certain violence problems they have had in the past. And in many cases it has hurt player in where they are drafted and the money that they make.
