Priestley's Socialist Ideas in An Inspector Calls 'An Inspector Calls' is, in many ways, a vehicle used by Priestley to spread and promote his socialist views. By utilising the characters' various dispositions and juxtaposing them against one and other, he highlights his message and creates a powerful dramatic piece. By employing such techniques as dramatic irony, hindsight and a clever setting, Priestley sends his eye-opening message and keeps both reader and audience interested through the stunning revelations at the end of each act. The play is about an upper-middle class family that is visited by an inspector regarding the suicide of a young woman by the name of Eva Smith. The inspector arrives in the middle of a celebration of the daughter (Sheila) and her engagement to the wealthy Gerald Croft. With the minimum of questioning, the family reveals many things about themselves that links them all to the death. When the inspector leaves, the family discover he wasn't a real police inspector at all and are relieved (save Sheila and Eric) to find out from the infirmary, that there has been no suicide. Shortly after this, the police call and tell them there has been a suicide and police inspector will be calling to discuss the matter. The plot thickens act by act and the unbelievable climax at the end of each one urges reader to keep reading and audience to keep watching. The writer often ridicules the Birling family using hindsight and dramatic irony. He makes Mr. Birling say laughable things that make him (in the audience's eyes) absolutely foolish. 'The Germans don't want war. Nobody wants war, except some half-civilis... ... middle of paper ... ...e are only good repercussions. Overall, the play sends a powerful message out to the audience. It tells us of the awful things that capitalism promotes and how it divides the world. We are given a powerful and worrying incite to the future and we realise that we need to help our younger generation to make the world a better place. The Inspector makes us realise that we desperately need to work together with each other, help each other and looking out for one and other. We are constantly reminded of this throughout the play in various speeches made by a number of people. The most powerful of which, that really commands attention and action, is the Inspectors final speech. 'And I tell you that the time will come soon when, if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire, blood and anguish.'

The play is very simplistic and overtly political. It heavily features varying aspects of non-illusory theatre to semaphor Priestley's political message. When reading the play, it is important to remember that the characters are not people but caricatures Priestley employs to manipulate the reader. This combines with the artificiality of the plot to form a completely biased play, from whichever angle one looks at it. However at the time of its publication it was not so outlandish, because it upheld the New Labour government, struggling so hard to bring about its reforms and stay in favour of a people who had suffered many hardships and were now looking to more years of difficulty and discomfort.

The Wars written by Timothy Findley shares a great relation to many of the ideas surrounding postmodern society, thus implementing many of the prominent ideas of the time around politics and societal norms into the plot of the story itself. Findley successfully depicts the plot of the novel taking place in the early 1900's; a time in which the western world was emerging from an industrial revolution, bringing radically foreign ideas on politics in the world, including the materialization of the Marxist political theory. The seemingly negative reception of the Marxist theory has denied it the right as a valid political view. One thing that cannot be denied is that a majority of the foundational ideas of the theory, describe basic human society and nature very accurately, which is something Findley explores in depth. The ideologies of power, class, and struggle are key factors in Marxism. These are the ideas that usually dictate; many of the actions that we make as people and in the journey's that we encounter in our lives. "Marxism attempts to reveal the ways in which our socioeconomic system is the ultimate source of our experience" (Tyson 277). The protagonist in The Wars ,Robert Ross, is an example of this experience. He is a young man from an elitist family that encounters these ideologies throughout his journey. The archetypal journey of Robert Ross in The Wars contains many elements of political theory from Marxism, showcased through the class system, the distinction between the oppressors and the oppressed, and the revolutionary actions that occur.

The character of the Inspector has six main attributes about the Inspector, which show that he is not an ordinary Inspector, the name. His physical description, his views, catalyst, his impressions and his morality. The name of the Inspector is Goole. If spelt the other way, it is Ghoul, implying someone who has a morbid interest in death, or a spirit, which is said to take fresh life from corpses. The idea of him being ghostly and the significance of his name give the impression more like he is Priestley’s voice.
The whole family’s actions are the cause of Eva’s death however the message about responsibility the Inspector presents is only take on board by Eric and Sheila. In conclusion, Priestley clearly gets across his message of responsibility towards others in the play. A clever script cunningly executed points out Priestley’s views to the audience. ‘Responsibility’ is the focal point of the play and is consistently addressed at the end of each interrogation, but the Birlings fail to recognise this.

Society is built and run on social and moral obligations and while these two are closely related, both impact cultures around the world in different ways. Both authors also have differing views on moral obligation since Marx also claims that morality as a whole is a social construction used to oppress the Proletariat and that it is therefore invalid, whereas Mill claims that moral obligation is one’s debt to oneself to express their opinion, since not doing so would leave one’s character undeveloped.
