1.0 Introduction

Ship maintenance can be divide into two major categories which is preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance. Preventive maintenance is the maintenance taken before the equipment or machinery breakdown, its mission is to maintain a level of certain services of an equipment, while corrective maintenance is the action taken after the breakdown occur, its task is to correct the defects to be found in different equipment.

A regular maintenance of the cargo handling equipment that used on board ship is essential to ensure that the equipment is always functioning at its operable state for speedy loading and unloading of cargoes as well as safety aspects.

Planned Maintenance System is a system which allows ship operators or ship owners to carry out maintenance in intervals according to manufacturers and classification society requirement. Besides, ship maintenance plan is a series of action to be taken to reduce an item or equipment to make it effective in its operational state. The fundamental basis of planned maintenance system for forklift (Figure 1)and benefits of planned maintenance for the cargo handling equipment that used on board ship will be further discuss throughout this assignment.

2.0 The fundamental basis of planned maintenance system for forklift that used on board ship.

2.1 Establish the methods and details of how equipment is to be maintained.

A forklift contain the following components such as the truck frame, counterweight, cab, mast, lift cylinders, overhead guard, tyres, power sources, fork and attachments. The Figure 2 below the label of each part of the components.

Besides, the tools, spare, frequency of the maintenances, method of maintenances and method of analysis also described in this assignment. Lastly, this assignment also discuss on the benefits of planned maintenances.
