It is important that teachers help their student developed social skills for peer acceptance. The role a pre-k teacher is to observed and record social skills. the teacher need to determine who plays alone, who plays in groups, who gains access to play and who makes friends. By observing and recording this data a teacher can find out who needs help and how can they help that child developed social skills. Arranging small group activities, is an effective way to help that child interact with others. It is important to teach students to work well in groups because in the workplace it is an essential key to success, it helps developed their communications skills as well as improve their confidence. If I were to design an activity for a pre-k
class that would encourage productive group work, I would have them play a game. The material I would use are Legos and number cards. I would divide my student in four group of four. Give each member a number cards. They are to add up all the numbers, and rush to the Lego station. They are to build a tower with the sum amount of Legos, hold in place until everyone else is finish. After everyone is done the whole class is going to help count the sum of each station. Having the student do a hands on activity helps student get involve in their own learning. The benefits of working in groups is that it gives students the opportunity to learn from one another. On my second day of observation I focus on how well the students interacted and worked with others. Most of student in this class were helpful and polite to one another. I observed a 4yr old girl help her classmate finish a puzzle. While other were not so nice, and very disruptive in class, the teacher was thee to correct those students and redirect the student who were off task.one strategy this teacher used to keep student on task was to remind the students what they were supposed to do instead of what they didn’t want them to do. I found this very effective especially for pre-k children. Children respond better when you tell them what to do instead of what not.
Personal, social and emotional developments (PSED) are acknowledged as one of the starting point of accomplishment in life. PSED is about the whole child, how they are developing now, what they can do to reach their goals but also contribute to their community and how children perceive their identity and ability, understand their relation to the others in the society and apprehend their own and others’ feelings. PSED are a part of children’s development where they will be able to communicate effectively and be able to develop positive behavior among themselves and to others. According to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), PSED is consists of three aspects which are self-confidence and self-awareness, managing feelings and behavior and making relationships (DfE, 2012). In this essay, I will discuss the factors that influence children’s behavior , theories of personal social development and the strategies to develop the positive behavior in children to promote PSED, transition and inclusion.
Lahey states that “young children develop social skills, such as negotiation, social dynamics, and the use of subtle verbal and nonverbal communication cues” through recess. Students should be familiar with all of these qualities, so that they can apply them to the real world. Negotiating comes into play when there are oppositions, group projects, or team sports. Children learn how to negotiate with each other by reaching an agreement. This is seen when children first begin to play games or sports with one another at recess. Negotiation is a significant quality that teaches students that they do not always get their way. Social skills can be formed through interactions with people. Recess provides students with the opportunity to interact with other children in order for them to learn different behaviors. This time that is set aside for recess teachers children about acceptable and non-acceptable behaviors. Students utilize their social skills to create special bonds with others at recess time. Play is such an important part of the learning and growing, especially for children. Children engage in many different types of play, but the play I saw the most when I observe the children of my daycare is sociodramatic play. The book Understanding Dramatic Play by Judith Kase-Polisini defines sociodramatic play as “both players must tacitly or openly agree to act out the same drama” (Kase-Polisini 40). This shows that children play with each other and make their worlds together as equal creators. Children also work together without argument. Cooperative play: Cooperative play begins in the late preschool period. The play is organized by group goals. There is at least one leader, and children are definitely in or out of the group. When children move from a self-centred world to an understanding of the importance of social contracts and rules, they begin to play games with rules. Based on research, it is safe to infer that social skills can affect anyone dramatically. Social skills are used by everyone everyday but these skills are not taught to everyone. Whenever you come in contact with a person, you use some type of social skills.
