Identify two situations in which your lack of skill, knowledge, rapport, assessment, or intervention was the reason interventions did not go as planned. The first situation that an intervention did not go as planned includes a client signing up for Section 8 Housing to be able to obtain appropriate housing for herself and her children. I assisted the client with application process and in the end she was not approved for the program due to having an extensive criminal background including drug related felony charges. I was not aware that individuals with criminal backgrounds were not eligible for the program. The second situation that an intervention did not go as planned included a client going into a shelter to obtain stability after leaving an abuse relationship. The client decided not to go to a shelter instead went to stay at relatives and friends homes and returned to the home with the abusive partner due to the stress of moving from one home to another frequently. Although I always have to allow the client the right to self-determination possibly increased skills and building a stronger rapport would have changed the outcome of the intervention. ii. The client provided the needed information and provided input on creating a monthly budget. The budget was completed, but was not implemented by the client month to month. iii. Is there anything you could have done differently in any of these situations? In the first situation I would have researched the Section 8 Housing Program to determine what the eligibility of the program was prior to having the client apply. Then, I would have devoted the time that was invested into applying for Section 8 Housing into searching for other housing options. In the second situation, I could have and will work much harder to empower clients that are or have been a victim of domestic violence. As for the school and teacher not following the IEP I have emailed the child’s teachers to remind them of the need for the teacher to write the daily assignment in the child’s assignment book. The next step will be to request another IEP meeting on behalf of the child. In regards to the monthly budget next time I could possibly create an envelope for each expense and request for the client to put the money for each expense in the envelope at each pay period to account for each
For most people who have ridden the roller coaster of primary education, subtracting twenty-three from seventy is a piece of cake. In fact, we probably work it out so quickly in our heads that we don’t consciously recognize the procedures that we are using to solve the problem. For us, subtraction seems like something that has been ingrained in our thinking since the first day of elementary school. Not surprisingly, numbers and subtraction and “carry over” were new to us at some point, just like everything else that we know today. For Gretchen, a first-grader trying to solve 70-23, subtraction doesn’t seem like a piece of cake as she verbalizes her confusion, getting different answers using different methods. After watching Gretchen pry for a final solution and coming up uncertain, we can gain a much deeper understanding for how the concept of subtraction first develops and the discrepancies that can arise as a child searches for what is correct way and what is not.

The case scenario is of a homeless young guy named Jim who appears to have an intellectual disability. Jim is addicted to marijuana and abuses alcohol and has suicidal thoughts. He has anger control issues where he is known to verbally threaten others. He currently has a counsellor who he had established a therapeutic relationship. From these sessions, the counsellor has learned that Jim had been physically abused by his stepfather. From reading this case scenario about Jim, it is evident that he would benefit from several different approaches or interventions including motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Clients often use stories to explore their problems in preparation for deciding which goals they want to set and subsequently accomplish. Each client has specific issues and life experiences which the goal should reflect. Clients are expected to put great effort into discovering a desire that the client has deep convictions about and will commit to putting in the work it takes to change behaviors that are no longer working in their life. Public Law 94-142: The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, now called Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), requires states to provide free, appropriate public education (FAPE) for every child regardless of disability. This federal law was the first to clearly define the rights of disabled children to receive special education services if their disability affects their educational performance. A parent of a special education student also has basic rights under IDEA including the right to have their child evaluated by the school district and to be included when the school district meets about the child or makes decisions about his or her education. If a child is identified as in need of special education services, the school district must devise a written individual education program (IEP) for the child, which includes related services. An IEP is a statement of a student’s special education and related services including speech services, psychological services, physical and occupational therapy, counseling and assistive technology and transportation. In addition, this legally binding, individualized plan outlines reasonable educational goals for the student and is reviewed and updated yearly.
The point of confronting a client is to facilitate a client’s awareness of discrepancies and offer insight into how the social worker is viewing a certain issue. Confrontations are a form of intervention and should be used at the appropriate time. The social workers goal is to confront a client when he/she would benefit the most (Grant, 2009).
