Many times when a child gets upset or angry he tends to lash out and can become violent. In any situation where a child is wrong instead of telling them there wrong and making them upset and irritated, let them self-reflect, and after the self-reflection use positive reinforcement to reinforce that good behavior of self-reflection. Like most normal people, I do not particularly enjoy working out. What I do enjoy, however, is binge watching television shows on Netflix. Unfortunately, laying in my bed watching hours of Shameless (the current TV show I am obsessed with) does not burn calories or tone my body. Therefore, my desired behavior is to workout daily for 45 minutes. To help achieve that behavior, I can utilize positive reinforcement, a form of operant conditioning. Positive reinforcement increases the chances of me working out by adding a pleasant stimulus, which is allowing myself to watch an episode of Shameless after I am done with my workout.

First of all, I was highly interested in the concept and various factors that together make up positive reinforcement. I had a premise that I could do some experimental work on the three children for whom I baby-sit during the week after school. They leave school full of energy and it is my job to get them to complete a series of tasks before the end of the evening. I imagined that some positive reinforcement might get them on their way to handling their responsibilities in a timelier manner. My first step was to come up with a specific instrumental response that would produce reinforcement. This took no time at all because by far the most painfully difficult thing for me to do is get the children to sit down and do their homework. I then spoke specifically to each child and asked them what they would rather choose as an after school activity. They named video games, television, and going to play with other neighborhood children. I had expected these types of answers from the children and made them into the positive reinforcers that would be contingent on the children’s performance of the instrumental response; namely completing their homework. I explained to the children that if they behaved and finished their homework, then directly following they could spend an hour doing an activity of their choice.
Some of the behavioral problems children of family violence suffer from are aggression, withdrawal, and frustration. Children of family violence are often more violent than other children (Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing). Some stress management techniques that children learn are bursts of anger. Violence is learned as an efficient way to solve problems. They often model their parent's conflict resolution techniques. These children are often withdrawn and internalize their emotions. Most of these children are isolated from their peers. Frequent change of residence could be a cause of children's isolation from peers (Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing). Children of family violence are often frustrated because they can not deal with their problems. Often, their education is disrupted by family violence and they start having problems concentrating at school and with truancy. Most are underachievers as a result of low self-esteem which leads to low participation in class or other school activities (Children's Services Plan).
According to Candelaria, Fedawa, Ahn (2012) “the occurrence of violent behaviors and bullying in schools continues to be a recognized problem among students” (p.596). Implementing anger management group intervention will help decrease rates of bullying and violent behaviors among children. Anger management interventions will help the children develop the proper coping skills that will help deal with anger and be beneficial for the future. An anger management intervention group brings this population a clear perspective on how children can deal with anger by providing coping skill training. The training helps the children understand that their feelings are valid. It teaches the children how to express their feelings in healthy ways that will help decrease the percentage of violent behavior (Candelaria et al., 2012).
When I was a child my parents would punish and reward me for things I had done. When I was in high school I was expected to get the best grades possible. My parents were always checking to see if my work was done on time and that my grades were to their expectations. I would get small rewards for getting good grades. It was in line with the behaviorism concept of positive reinforcement/punishment and negative reinforcement/punishment. When I would get good grades I would get complements that didn’t seem that sincere. The way they verbalized their praise did not have much enthusiasm. It would make me feel like I didn’t accomplish what they wanted, even though I believed I was doing excellent. However, when I received poor grades the punishments

For example, if a student complaints in order to get attention and is successful in getting it, the attention helps as positive reinforcement which increases the possibility that the student will remain to complain. My measurable, specific and realistic goal for this quarter is to exercise at least 10 hours a week by weightlifting, running, and swimming for the next 10 weeks. To be able to do that, I would need to have positive reinforcement to keep me going, help give me that little push that I need every day.
